Title: Track Day October 4th Post by: Cloner on September 18, 2009, 08:19:56 AM Just thought I'd drop a line to encourage all of you HDHs to register for the trackday at Sandia on October 4th, as I have. Tickets can be bought at Sandia BMW for $75.....of if you're too proud to walk into a BMW dealership you can buy online at the SMRI website for $95. I felt the $20 discount made it worth my time to walk into the Beemer joint.
Also, just FYI, the BMW folks will have the unveiling of the new S1000 RR on Saturday, October 3rd at their dealership, with refreshments from 3 until 6. They will also have it out on the track on the 4th so you can see it in action....if you come. but i have never done a track day so i will need some help fo sho to get the bike preped and ready... is it a full day or half day for that much? Title: Re: Track Day October 4th Post by: Cloner on September 18, 2009, 01:58:49 PM It's a full day, and the prep isn't difficult compared to other tracks I've ridden on. According to the SMRI website, all we'll have to do to our bikes is tape or remove the lights and turn signals, tape the glass instrument panel lenses, and remove the license plate. You also have to have a one piece riding suit, or a two-piece that zips together, a Snell/DOT/or EU reg. conforming helmet, and some boots and gloves.
You can read all of their requirements, including gear requirements, at http://www.smri-racing.org/docs/trackdayguidelines.pdf, (http://www.smri-racing.org/docs/trackdayguidelines.pdf,) or get other track day information at http://www.smri-racing.org/trackdays.php (http://www.smri-racing.org/trackdays.php) The BMW folks are serving lunch, coffee, and espresso during the event, so you don't have to bring any of that. I'll bring a pop-up canopy and a chair or two, an air tank (to air up your tires if they're low), a tire pressure gauge, a few hand tools, sunblock, a cooler with water and Gatorade, a 5 gallon fuel can, chain lube, brake fluid, motor oil, and a poster of Giuliano Maoggi in the '56 Motogiro D'Italia on a Ducati 125 Gran Sport for inspiration. Have I forgotten anything? Title: Re: Track Day October 4th Post by: kingbaby on September 18, 2009, 05:13:37 PM A blow up doll for the car pool lane.

Thanks for thinking of the important stuff, Kingbaby. Can I borrow yours? Wait. On second thought, I think I'll purchase a "virgin" one. ;D Title: Re: Track Day October 4th Post by: dusty on September 18, 2009, 06:08:33 PM Don't worry Cloner, he has no use for it anymore. Besides we gave her a bath. [evil]

[laugh] Well . . . it's just that when Cloner mentioned about borrowing KBs blow up doll, at first I thought (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm203/feckert/Smileys/thomg.gif) he shouldn't think of you that way. But then I realized he talking about an actual blowup doll and then thought (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm203/feckert/Smileys/thomg.gif) After all this time and that is still there and YOU helped clean her up . . . and . . . and . . . (http://i297.photobucket.com/albums/mm203/feckert/Smileys/thomg.gif) I . . . I . . . I'm so confused. I wonder how the guy felt with the R6 they stole the body work off of. [laugh] And yes, I know, I know... It's fast I'm sure, but doesn't BMW have enough $ to build a bike that looks a little different? Title: Re: Track Day October 4th Post by: Zaster on October 04, 2009, 05:27:08 PM those are great shots Karl [thumbsup] My thoughts exactly.....I wish they could have made their own mark and show some innovation. The paint scheme doesn't do it any favors either.I wonder how the guy felt with the R6 they stole the body work off of. [laugh] And yes, I know, I know... Title: Re: Track Day October 4th Post by: Cloner on October 05, 2009, 06:19:28 AM Glad you could come out, Karl. It was good to see your German friend, again, too. I can't remember his name though. That's embarrassing.
It was good to see you, too, JJ. That Tricolore is looking better every time I see it. As to the track day, it was the bomb. I rode all but one session, as I missed the last one. I got pretty tired toward the end of the day and made a pretty serious mistake in turn two setting up for three. I usually set my foot on the shifter and preload it so that I only need to fan the clutch for the downshift. Well, on this lap I guess I was too tired to hold my frikkin' foot up (actually, I lost concentration...but tired sounds better), because I loaded the shifter too much and it downshifted whilst I was still leaned over. This error resulted in the rear stepping out substantially to my left. I decided that, discretion being the better part of valor, I should pack up whilst still intact. My hands are still aching. What a blast!! The cool news is that I can now wholeheartedly endorse Pirelli Diablo Rosso rubber. The tires gripped like mad, and when they did slide (even due to ham-fisted treatment like the turn-two-leaned-over downshift) they did so predictably and ran back into line with minimum effort. I wasn't riding really hard, so I didn't move the front at all! That's rare for this fat man, as I tend to load the front more than most folks. That was the last trackday for the year. I hope to see some of you out next year! |
