Title: my clutch is slipping...again -Fixed!
Post by: rendler on September 20, 2009, 11:37:38 AM
I have an 07 S2R 1000 with 6500 miles. It was purchased in 06.  I had a Ducati slipper clutch installed in 07 when the bike had about 1000 miles on it. The slipper clutch has about 5500 miles on it. Over the past year I've had to bring it to my local Ducati dealer twice because the clutch started slipping in all gears when I accelerate hard. The engine revs but the bike doesn't accelerate. It will accelerate if I open the throttle slowly. This happens after the bike warms up and I've been riding for about an hour. I don't do track days, just street ride and don't abuse the bike. The slipper clutch does get used when I down shift going into tight corners. The clutch started slipping again a few months after the first repair. The second repair was a month ago and today it started slipping again. Has this happened to anyone else?  Any ideas as to what's causing the problem? I have the original clutch and I'm thinking of replacing the slipper clutch with it. Actually I'm getting so frustrated that I'm thinking of replacing the bike! Your help would greatly be appreciated.

Make sure you have 1-1.5mm free play at the clutch lever.  Insufficient free play can cause the clutch to slip.

Thanks howie. I forgot to mention the bike has Pazzo levers. As I squeeze the lever it seems there is no take up, there is immediate resistance. I've never adjusted the free play screw, do I turn it clockwise or counter clockwise?

Thank god you didn't replace the bike over an aftermarket lever adjustment.

Got some shed time after work Friday to work on the clutch lever. When I tried to turn the free play adjustment screw, I found it was glued into place. I had to take the clutch lever off the bike to work on getting all the glue out. I don't know why the adjustment screw was glued since there's a set screw to lock it in. I reassembled the lever, reinstalled it and turned the adjustment screw until I had some play and saw a bit of squirt in the reservoir. Then I tightened the set screw a bit. It was in the low 60's Saturday when I took it for a ride. I got the clutch heated up and the engine temp up to 220. The clutch didn't slip at all whenever I pinned the throttle. I tightened the set screw to lock in the adjustment screw. Added benefit is I now have a longer clutch engagement and it feels like the bike pulls harder. Thanks for the advice!
