when my 2009 monster 1100 is cold it will start up and stall right away then when i try to start it again it is very hard to start it will turn over but wont start, until i turn the key to the off position let it sit for a couple of seconds then it will start. this past weekend i was at a track day at 7 am. it was about 45 degrees out. when i tried to start the bike the starter spun but did not engage after 5 or 6 attempts it finally engaged then did the same thing i described in the beginning. the bike is fuel injected.
Pull choke lever full open.
Crank bike.
Engine should catch, and run at around 2500 rpms for about a minute.
Shut choke off.
Engine should now be around 1100 rpms.
BC.
No choke on 09 Monster 1100. No fast idle either.
I had this happen to me today. It was about 6:30PM in foggy, cold Monterey, CA. I didn't shut the key off, I just cranked the starter button a few times and it fire up. I ran really rough until the bike decided it was warm enough. Not the first time, it usually happens around mid day for me. I have yet to shut the bike off and back on.
Had the same issue with my M1100. The dealer proactively asked me if I was having the problem too. Short term solution that works for me is:
1- attempt to start
2- if won't start then turn key off completely for 10 sec
3- turn key back on, wait for "monster 1100" to go away on display
4- start like normal
this has worked every time for me. The dealer said I should expect an ECU reflash in the future most likely to address it once Ducati finds a permanent solution
hope this helps!!
thanx for the help guys.
I was having the same problem. I talked to the dealer and they suggested that i try the following before trying to start it. turn the bike on, let it get to the monster 1100 on the gauge. turn it off. turn it back on, and start it normally. the dealer said its supposed to calibrate the system. im not sure how it does it, but it seems to have worked for mine, it starts ok now.
i havent heard anything about a reflash for the ecu, but it sounds like something that would happen for a new model like the 1100.im sure we will all be notified when/if the reflash is out.
