Title: Some asshat broke into my car
Post by: Airborne on September 24, 2009, 03:36:23 PM
Driving home from work I passed by where my mother works and see 5 cops standing around my mustang (I switched vehicles with my mother). I immediately thought she had some type of health issue leaving her office so I frantically drove up a do not enter into the parking lot and blew a stop sign.

Relieved she hadn't dropped dead, I find this:

Someone smashed the window with a brick to get inside. It's unclear whether they were trying to steal it and gave up or were just looking for stuff to steal.

My radar detector is missing.  :(
It was a cheap POS detector but worked. I got lucky.

I work on a job location where my vehicle is subject to random search upon entry, so thankfully I keep pretty much nothing inside my car except the bare necessities. Ironically I commute 200 miles a day and I switched cars with her to keep miles off it etc, it only has about 20K on it.

They called "csi" and dusted my car for prints. Apparently there has been a rash of break ins and stolen gps' etc. Its a good area and happened in broad daylight in an elementary school parking lot!

The cop asked me "Why (I) have a radar detector?"  [bang]

That sucks. My parents always get on me about leaving stuff visible in the car even if they're not actually worth anything. Their story is that when I was a baby they didn't have a baby bag for diapers and junk so they used a camera bag. So one day someone bashed in the window to take a camera bag full of poopy diapers.  [roll]

Side note, mommy doesn't know how to park.  :P

That really sucks man.

Maybe they were upset about your parking job!

Sorry, bad timing I'm sure, but I had to....

I keep my car trashed enough inside that any wise thief will move on lest they contract an infectious disease from within my nasty car.

I'm gonna remember that if I ever have kids.  Talk about a serious bait & switch!

I think he parked it and then took his moms car... just saying.

That does suck, at least they didn't cut the top or back window to get in. I imagine a window would be cheaper and quicker to replace.

None of his make the beast with two backsing business would have been my response. If they are not illegal in your state, then it is of no concern to him why you own one.

A cheap POS one?

Didn't you have a Valentine One?  ;D

Do I get an additional puke smiley for 250 a day?
BTW, park all over NYC. Good neighborhoods, bad neighborhoods in all the boroughs and the only place that anything was ever stolen from my car? At home in my driveway one night when I forgot to lock it.

he was just bustin' your balls about the radar detector, unless he's off the reservation (or you are in Virginia I suppose)

Yeah, he sounds like he was busting your balls. Or maybe he's a stock holder in a VSAT company.

My car got broken into the night I got home from Indy. They stole my GPS and my digital camera (roomies DSLR was already inside). When I called the cops, they came out after about an hour, looked at the car, asked what was stolen and looked at me like i was some whiny little pregnant dog because my GPS and camera were stolen "ONLY" totalling around $500.

No offense taken, I've been called nuts for as long as I can remember and it's a pretty decent description.

I hit 200k on my '06 Mazda 3 last week.  ;D

LET ME CLARIFY, I DID NOT PARK THE CAR!  IT WAS HER. Shes the little old lady from pasadena driving around in that thing. [laugh]

Radar detectors are legal in my state, so yeah he was just busting my balls. I honestly couldn't remember what brand the detector was, it was about 12 years old. I usually get them at radio shack for around 60 bucks and have one in every family car. The only ticket I've ever gotten was when I didn't have my radar detector with me.

I just got some estimates, cheapest is $265 installed, out of pocket. My deductible is 500 bucks. I may do it myself but havnt really taken a look at whats involved. I've replace window motors before though.

Now to jack my own thread...car depreciation is going to kill me. Do you basically throw away a car every 4-5 years? At this rate I do 40k miles a year, but hopefully buying myself a place to live in that time frame.

I don't mind the driving at all, its the idea of the mileage that kills me.

I feel like many people replace cars because they simply want something new, or the interior bits have worn out to some degree, not because the car's mileage is sufficiently high to be a problem. Hell my '01 Tahoe has 200k from driving back and forth from Memphis to Atlanta for a couple years, and it doesn't "NEED" replaced anytime soon. Sure, I want something new eventually, but it doesn't actually need replaced.

Common crime right now. Don't leave a GPS, IPOD, cell phone, or anything else in sight. They don't leave prints either, they break the window and reach in for the items. Tint your windows if you can, make's it harder for them to see in and makes it harder to get in (tint holds the glass together).

Yeah Basically every 5 years it's replaced. They're pretty much done by then anyway, it's the city portion of the miles that I think hurts them most. NYC roads are as terrible as ever right now. My job reimburses me for the car payment so it's not so terrible otherwise I'd be doing it a different way. BTW, the Mazda 3 so far is holding up way better than it's predecessor. a Corolla.
On topic though, I really do intentionally make sure the car is a bit untidy inside and that nothing of value is visible. I also randomly return to it and look like I'm "a bit off" when I do if anyone is in sight. Never had a problem in the city yet.

That's definitely a little over the 15,000 miles per year standard/average [laugh]

60k on that car, couple thousand on the truck, 15-20k on my wife's car and 5 or 6k on the bike.

No wonder the government can't find you.

You don't stay in one spot long enough

I would have been a smart-one and asked the officer why he carries a knife(to cut things)...or a flashlight(to light things up)...or a gun(to put holes in things)

Could've been worse. Friend had his Miatas top slashed last week and his radio stolen. Radio was worth $50, top was almost $600 to replace.

I just replaced the passenger side glass on a Cayenne Turbo because someone wanted the radar detector inside.  My bill to the customer was around $1,000.  Had to remove the seats and part of the carpet to get all the glass out.  Also, windows are a pregnant dog on Cayennes.

Something I have to worry about with the Touareg as well?

I honestly don't know for sure. Don't know if the doors are the same construction or not.  Most likely they are.  Just don't get it broke into.  :(
