Title: 2006 S2R1000 stepper motor
Post by: slash on September 29, 2009, 11:30:46 AM
Hey guys,
I have an 06 S2R1000 with a DP ECU and termi cans (no closed loop system) with 20K miles.  The bike is garaged and well care for. Here's my question:
When I start it cold it always starts great.  I usually let idle for 2-3 minutes and then ride. However, once it's ridden and warmed up, and I turn it off and let sit a little while (go for a coffee), and then start it (engine temp 140 or less) the following happens.  It starts up and at an idle the stepper motor cycles between 1500 and 700-800 rpm and the bike frequently stalls...until I ride it a bit and get it fully warmed (200oF).  To overcome this I have give it a smug of throttle while idling or it stalls (a pain when you are braking at a stop light).

Another thing...occasionally when I'm riding (when it's cool out) I'll discover when I come to a stop (or pull in the clutch) that the bike is idling at about 3500 rpm.   The cure is to turn off the ignition for a few seconds and then restart and it will idle in the normal range.

Any thoughts?

Does the bike idle high in neutral when you encounter the 3.5K idle at stops? I have a S2R1K with stock ECU and FatDuc and have had an increased idle at stops that goes away if I stick the bike in neutral.

My fast idle doesn't work like it used to. I almost always have to give it a good blip of throttle when starting and hold it for a few seconds to keep it from dying. It settles into a nice idle afterward though. I don't on the otherhand have the problem with the bike idling to high.

My 07 1K with 15000 miles does the same thing, i have the same setup as you. I have been scouring the forum for an answer and was just about to post the same syntoms, so an answer would be awsome.

I also have an S2R1000 with termis/DP ECU. While I've never had the high idle problem that slash describes, I have noticed (like pennyrobber) that my fast idle doesn't seem to work like it used to. I don't know if this is really a problem worth fixing, but being a mechanical geek I would be interested in opinions as to what exactly is going on.

I also remember one isolated incident of the weird "cycling" that slash was describing after a warm start, but it hasn't repeated itself in a whole season of riding. I just attributed that to a batch of bad gas or something, but after reading his post I'm thinking maybe there is more to it.

Not sure if this will help get you going down the right road or not. But when I did the 50mm system on my RS, I had the same prob and the idle air bleeds had to be cranked ouy some as it would "hunt" for a bit in the scenario you described, until it cleared its throat.

How long has it been since you had a TPS/TB synch? Any idea on what your CO is set at? I had mine lowered from what was set initially as well.

Of course, a PCIII and dyno time will clear it all up and get some more ponies too. Ask me how I  know...  ;D

My bike does that too. You can hold the clutch in with it in gear, and it will idle high. When you pop it into neutral, it drops back down to regular RPMs. THis only happens occasionally though.

As for the high idling. IT happens from time to time. Most often when i ride the bike somewhere and restart it after its cooleded down. ill rev it up and kill it, and just reset with the key. Itll usually go away.

My bike did the same thing the tech that services it (at GP here in San Diego) took a few minutes made some adjustments and it's now rock solid at idle. He did tell me it may start a little hard and he was correct. It needs a little throttle coaching for the first minute or so but then while I gear up it's fine.

He said that there is a ball bearing in the motor that had worn and was going to see if the rep would goodwill it. He also said that the only way to purchase it was with the throttle body assy. :P

I've been real happy with what he did and can live with it as solid as it runs after the first minute. [thumbsup]
