Title: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: CairnsDuc on September 30, 2009, 03:58:36 PM I have pondered this question for a while, When I first bought the Monster I could never Imagine selling it, It was a blast out on the highway or in the local Mountain ranges it was a grin inducing stuff.
But lately with Qld Transport and Main roads making Qld roads slower and slower, I must say I am having serious thoughts that maybe it's time to move on. (This State is becoming the make the beast with two backsing Nanny State!) Over the last 12 months the speed limits around the area have been dropping everywhere, the highway I take to get home has always been 100 KPH, but has just dropped to 80, not much of a difference, but enough to be a little annoying. The main reason I bought my Monster was to enjoy on the local ranges, The Gillies Range and The Palmerston highway. Now I don't go crazy up and down these ranges, I stay under or close to the legal limit (80 on the Gillies and 100 on the Palmerston) and on very rare occasions in times of extreme exuberance I may have even exceeded the speed limit (Quick! lock me up, according to the Guvment I'll be killing babies next!!) But with rumors going around of the Gillies and the Palmerston both having there speeds dropped in coming months, I think this would be enough for me to sell the Monster. I figure why keep a machine that I have setup and fiddled with for fun Range work, when speed limits will not permit any fun any more. I think I would move to a dual purpose machine, at least I can still cruise back and forwards to work, and then have a little play in the dirt on the weekends (nothing to hard core) But between an over zealous local Police Traffic branch, a Transport and Main roads dept that is determined to make this state into the Nanny State. I think riding a pure road orientated bike is going to become a thing of the past. Please note, I'm selling the bike yet, I'm just throwing these Ideas out there in case the speed drops happen. Your thoughts? Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: mostro900 on September 30, 2009, 04:23:05 PM what is this heresy ?? burning at the stake I say !!
yeah, I tend to agree with your thoughts though - all those things detract from the joy of riding, but if we all got rid of our bikes, they would have won. I'm of the firm opinion that we need to make sure that our sensible voices are heard and in part that is being seen on the road by other motorists. Supporting the associations that help put our voices forward also helps. but, no, nothing short of total bankruptcy would make me sell the monster. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: CairnsDuc on September 30, 2009, 04:29:00 PM wSupporting the associations that help put our voices forward also helps. Yeah, good theory, but which one? there are so many different mobs all claiming to be looking after riders rights, but they don't seem to be winning many positives for riders at the moment. They all seem to be spending there time fighting between each other and trying to claim they are the best. I gave up on a lot of the riders clubs years ago. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: dragonworld. on September 30, 2009, 05:04:36 PM I hear ya!! ;D
The M1000DS is ok at the moment doing the commute with the offday strops, but it isnt as happy at the lower speeds and congestion that is becoming more the norm down here in Vicbloodytoria!! [roll] (More revenue cameras than any other State apparently!!) >:( Ok its a 2 valve which makes it more tractable than the 4V's but!................The older M750 is very good to commute on, even though it is a carbed motor, its lighter weight, smaller rear tyre, makes it an easier steerer, and its modest power output makes it very well suited to the daily grind. ;D Sooooo, in agreeance with Mostro, no fuggin way would I sell my Monster/s, a ride is a ride is a ride and I like to do that on my Monster. And the Plods and the Guvmint aint gunna force me off it. Civil disobedience?? You Betcha if it comes to that. [evil] [thumbsup] [moto] [evil] Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: Betty on September 30, 2009, 05:32:12 PM Have to agree with the road safety gone mad situation we are finding ourselves in.
The old road north of sydney is another example ... if not the most popoular 'bikers road' in Sydney it is certainly close. For the northern part the speed limit is 60 and I remember travelling this road in heavy traffic back in the day when the speed limit was 80 (I think) and people (such as my old man) used it as an alternative to the F3 so they didn't have to pay the 60 cent toll. It was obviously much safer when the '70/'80s cars with more power than braking performance would shuttle families up the cost for the weekend/holiday. The problem is, now people see the speed limit as such a joke it is completely ignored from a safety point of view and it is not uncommon to have guys charging through dragging knees. So it is entirely possible the mindshift has changed towards ... 'well I if I get caught I am going to lose my licence anyway so I might as well go all out'. I honestly believe most speed limit reductions are counter-productive from a safety point of view ... just as speed cameras are. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Most likely it'll just be a spontaneous decision and i want something different. The problem is, the S4R is at the top right next to the Brute. So if you don't want an S4R or a Brute..... WTF do you get? Hypermotard? I wouldn't mind it but i do enjoy a lot of open road riding so i don't think that's quite suitable. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: ducsport on October 01, 2009, 12:12:42 AM Yes, the whole nanny stafe stuff is giving us all the $h1t$.
In my work I deal with the RTA in NSW. I had this pricess formt he RTA banging on about how dangerous roadside assets could be. He was specifically on about power poles. I asked him if the RTA are so concerned about safety, why are they still putting up wire rope barriers everywhere? It went rapidly downhill form there... Mostro & Dragon have the right idea - civil disobediance [evil] [evil] And when that fails, un-civil disobedience kicks in.... My Duc is not a Monster, but it will be dragged, as brimo said, from my cold dead hands. I have sold cars and bikes in the past when they had depreciated to be almost worthless. I should have kept them. Luckily my bike is now not worth that much, so I see no reason to sell it ever [thumbsup] Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: Spider on October 01, 2009, 02:10:24 AM sometimes I think an older MV Agusta....a few years old....sometimes the 848 sings to me....but at my size neither is an option. And whilst the superbike range does look the business....can you imagine chugging along in traffic on a 1098/1198....in fact by the time the bike starts to sing you're in 'suspended license' territory....and that's just the start, once the insurance company hears about it....you're knackered!
So I figure, keep the engine and get the rest better and learn some skills, you can still have some major fund round a corner at 60 or 80 if done right. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: mattyvas on October 01, 2009, 02:38:17 AM Simple answer = Nothing
Long and difficult answer = Nothing ever, ever, ever. Speed limits, traffic, other stereo typical idiot riders trying sniff the centre white line. Nothing will ever make me sell my Monster. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: Yellow Meanie on October 01, 2009, 03:28:08 AM I hear ya Matty. I too am addicted, infected, in love, obsessed with my Monster. :-*
I wouldn't sell her, ever ;D Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? But some of the guys you see on the old road I reckon would just keep goin'. As for the Monsters I can't see either of them going anywhere ... I believe the correct term is over-capitalised [roll] [laugh] Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: bazz20 on October 01, 2009, 04:24:41 AM I hear ya Matty. I too am addicted, infected, in love, obsessed with my Monster. :-* im going too miss our little rides dave and miss the roads down here if the other monster owners new how fast we really go they would all try too migrate too tassie :'(I wouldn't sell her, ever ;D Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: CairnsDuc on October 01, 2009, 11:51:20 AM I love my Monster, and it would be a tough decision, and to be honest I really don't know if I could sell the bike, knowing how much blood, sweat and tears (And let's be honest, Money! ;D) are involved in the modding and maintenance of the beast.
When I wrote this topic yesterday, I was very angry as I had been listening to ABC local radio and this topic of the speed limits being lowered was being discussed, it was then that the Local Traffic Branch senior Sargent Cockhead rang in to the show claiming that lowering speed limits was the only way to save lives, and then that's when he rattled off a number of roads that they wanted the limits lowered on. It is annoying beyond words just how much the Motorists of Australia are being Arse raped under the false pretense of "Safety" Our Roads are clogged with poor drivers, badly maintained vehicles of all shapes and sizes, roads that are to small and in very bad condition. And the Answer? Slow every one down and fine the hell out of them for daring to be the tiniest bit over the limit, yeah, that'll fix the problem... [roll] I understand where a lot of you are coming from when you advocate civil disobedience, but to me all that means are you are having to feed money (by the way of fines) into an already corrupt and broken system, and then with out any reason the Cops in Queensland can confiscate your bike for no reason under the Anti hoon laws. And I'll be pushing off a Cliff before that would ever happen!! Maybe I'm just getting Grumpy in my old age [laugh] Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: Jukie on October 01, 2009, 12:21:20 PM i will never sell jukie his mine and anyway Betty will get lonely without
her boyfriend in the garage Title: !! Post by: dragonworld. on October 01, 2009, 02:46:58 PM And you just know that the Safety Nazis will have lots of Cameras, radar etc on said newly rezoned roads to enforce the speed limits!! [roll] [evil] [roll]
For our benefit of course, because these new zones arnt set up to raise more cash for the coffers?? Surely not?? [roll] [bang] [puke] Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: loony888 on October 02, 2009, 01:11:17 AM i for one will never conform to the safety nazis. i hereby vow publicly to laugh in the face of danger, scoff at the proposition of fines and demerit points and abscond at the first hint of blue lights.
they're only dropping the speed limits here in QLD because bligh has just about sent us broke and it's an excellent way of increasing indirect (road) tax, if you're used to a 100 zone and do 111, at 80 that's now 31 over which equates to 6 points and i think $380 or thereabouts. add to that if you're caught speeding in the same bracket, say 30 to 40 over twice in one year the fine and demerit points double, bye bye license. I say it's worth the gamble to say bye bye plod! paul. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: monstermick58 on October 08, 2009, 01:39:21 AM MMM.... Interesting question, but I, like you, would have to say DEATH!!
But with all these speed limits being reduced everywhere, isnt it nice to know that the authorties have seen the light and completely resurfaced Maquarie Pass with grippy hotmix. Us anarchists must chose our time and place. Mmick Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? Post by: mattyvas on October 08, 2009, 02:09:43 AM Us anarchists must chose our time and place. Post by: 916_tommy_s4 on October 08, 2009, 11:38:53 PM Someone holding a gun to my head or testicles would probably cause me to think long and hard about selling the s4.....
However, since Im here in QLD and the coppers cant even carry guns and Captain Bligh and her cronies wont leave us riders in peace, the gun to head/balls isnt likely to happen. I'll just claim dyslexia or something and return to my civil disobediance/anarchism when set free from the clutches of the fun-police. Title: Re: What would make you sell your Monster? I'd sell my monster for a Streetfighter S, and probably have to sell a kidney as well... Though even with the amazingly exorbitant price they're asking in Oz, Id still keep the s4 for as a "run about".
