Title: My first oil change on my 696...
Post by: Roy on October 01, 2009, 06:40:19 PM
Can you all take a look at this vid on youtube and let me know if it is a credible source to follow.
Ducati Monster 696 First Oil Change + Screen Cleaning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CUZEL6OLK8s#normal)

I also have a couple of questions based on the video:

1. Do I need to buy new "crush washers" for the oil drain plug or can I reuse the ones on their currently.

2. Do I have to clean the oil screen filter?

3. I'm using the K&N oil filter this time...will I need to go get a torque wrench to tighten it to a certain specification?  Is it also necessary to tighten the oil drain plug to a certain specification?

4.  I'm sure the ducati manual tells how much oil to use; my local ducati tech said 3 quarts but it sounded like from the video that this guy used only 2 1/2 quarts.  Any 696 owners know the exact amount of oil to use?

5.  Any other helpful bits of advise would also be appreciated.

Thanks for your help!

Noob!

I don't have the bandwidth right now to watch the video you posted, but you should check out the CA-Cycleworks oil change video. [thumbsup]

Workshop manual calls for 3.1 liters  (3.28 quarts = 3 quarts + 8 ounces) of Shell Advance Ultra 4 15W50 weight oil.

Recommended replacement of crush washer on drain plug (and on filter screen if you elect to clean it).

Torque for drain plug is 42 NM  (38 min - 46 max)
Torque for filter screen is same

I like to follow the torque instructions on what ever filter I purchase.

I forgot to mention that while the video shows him filling the engine with only 2 1/2 quarts of oil, remember he did add oil to the filter before installing it.  He also mentions he would check the oil level glass and add oil as needed.  So, 3 1/4 quarts as stated in the workshop manual pretty much agrees with what he is doing here.

Watch 'em both

I also have a couple of questions based on the video:

No, usually they work several times.  If they do happen to leak you will hate yourself though.  You can by a bunch from an auto parts store cheap.

2. Do I have to clean the oil screen filter?

Ducati says not until 22.5K, but, hey, you are cheap labor.

3. I'm using the K&N oil filter this time...will I need to go get a torque wrench to tighten it to a certain specification?  Is it also necessary to tighten the oil drain plug to a certain specification?

Filter 11 nm, the rest answered

4.  I'm sure the ducati manual tells how much oil to use; my local ducati tech said 3 quarts but it sounded like from the video that this guy used only 2 1/2 quarts.  Any 696 owners know the exact amount of oil to use?

Partially fill filter.  Fill to the line with the bike vertical.  Start bike, let the engine warm up a bit.  Top off.  All the oil will not drain out.

5.  Any other helpful bits of advise would also be appreciated.
