I've been looking to get some clip-on handlebars for my 1999 M750, but I'm not sure what my options are since I've got the older coffin-style reservoirs. If it's feasible, maybe I could change out the coffins for the circular ones and then I wouldn't have a problem picking out new bars. Or maybe I should just get the Suburban Machinery bars?

Thoughts?

Not familiar with your bike, but if you were to get hold of a pair of reservior spacers, then you'd increase the range of clip-ons that you could fit without running into clearance issues on your coffin reservoirs.

 While the spacers will help increase the options of which clipons he can use, the problem is that the levers on the coffin style masters are not adjustable. So adding the spacers will move the levers further away from the grips. Thats ok if he has big hands but if he doesn't it may create more of a problem than it solves.

I'm using Swatt clip-ons on my 2003 M800 and no spacers.  No problems with coffin reservoir clearance.  Not sure how the M750 coffins compare dimensionally, though.

I used the swatts on my '02 M620, but had to use the spacers in order to get the levers/reservoirs back on. Yes, the levers were a bit farther away after that but it wasn't a big deal for me (and I have small hands). the only problem is that it seemd like a harder clutch pull b/c the lever was a bit farther away. However, it was a perfect time for new levers so I scored a set of Pazzo's.

bottom line: in my case, new, adjustable levers weren't necessary, but made the experience better.

Some older bikes have a brake coffin in the same size as the clutch coffin - they will probably not need a spacer.

Yeah, my brake and clutch coffins are the same size. I take it then all I need to do is buy some clip-ons?

Do I need to buy a new triple clamp with this for it to work? And how do I know what size I need to buy?

You don't need another top triple, but the stock part doesn't look very nice - paint it perhaps?

The Swatt clip ons are nice and there are many others. MotoWheels has the 2.5" riser Swatt in stock. Depends on how low you want to go - even the raised Swatts will put the grips several inches lower than stock bars.

Regardless of brand choice - I think it's a good idea to get the ones which are "two piece fork clamps" to avoid the need to disassemble the forks.

Clip ons are labeled with the diameter of the part of the fork they are mounted on. I think your bike is the same as most Monsters - 50mm - check first.

you'll need the coffin spacers with clip ons.  monster parts sells those and some cheaper adjustable levers that might make the reach better then the stock setup.

try apex clipons if you're trying to do this fast and easy.  they are cheap at a hundred bucks and i've seen these on the older bikes.  they are two pieces and mount with out taking off the top triple.  they don't have any rise to them, which makes for a long reach, but they shouldn't interfere with the stock triple set up. the rise in some clipons creates problems with the older style top triple clamp (pre 2002).  after some research i bought 2.5" rise swatts for my 2000 m750, took them out of the box and immediately saw i had a problem in mounting them below the top triple.  the fork clamp bolts in the top triple interfere with the the riser assembly portion of the clipons.  the clip on portion of the swatts is too big (beefy) to mount above the triple so below it went for me.  you can see in the pic i have almost none of my fork tubes sticking above the triple.  i changed the geometry a lot doing that, people recommend against doing this, but it was the only way i could get the clipons to mount to the 50mm portion of the fork tube.  i also had to have a kid at school make an additional spacer per side to set the riser assembly away from the clip on assembly so that the risers cleared the bolts and the triple.  so it goes (clipon | 15mm spacer | clip on riser).  now if you buy a new triple this problem is eliminated completely and opens up more options for clip ons.

Sorry, I didn't know about the different top triple.

Did you need the brake/clutch spacers for adjustability or were they an absolute?

So, the Suburban Macinery Bars might be the best option for Xan07 - or the rather radical route of clip ons below the triple? Too bad this isn't easy....

I'll give the Apex bars a try, if they end up a bit too low for my taste I'll go ahead and get the Swatts or SpeedyMotos.

they are an absolute with swatt clip ons

I used old, like 93 gsxr clipons.  50mm one piece aluminum and the coffins clear no problem.
