Title: Issue with Immobilizer when swaping gauge cluster on 01 S4
Post by: djrashonal on October 03, 2009, 04:23:22 PM
I hope this is the right spot for this. I need some advice. I'm a long time lurker but just bought my first Duc from a guy on this board. it's an 01 S4 with a bunch of mods (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=25817.0 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=25817.0)) I got the bike about a week and a half ago and I'm not a huge fan of the Instrument cluster. The one he had put on is great and very informative, but i dont race so i dont need all the stuff on it (its an AIM MyChron 3 http://www.aimsports.com/products/mychron3-plus/index.html (http://www.aimsports.com/products/mychron3-plus/index.html) ) I just moved so all my tools are packed and i have a very basic knowledge base. I'm not inept, but i havent spent too much time working on mechanical things to know the ins and outs yet.

so you know the background here's the question.

since the gauge cluster has already been replaced and there is a DP Corse ECU installed, can I swap out the gauges for any gauges? since there has already been a swap does that mean the immobilizer has been immobilized? can I install S2R gauges? do the gauges i get need to be new(virgin) or since the ecu has been swapped can I throw some used ones on there.

thanks for the help! If I havent explained something correctly feel free to throw something at me and ask me to reword it.

im not sure, but i would venture to say that if he is using aftermarket gauges, the immobilizer has been disabled.
unless of course the stock gauges are hidden somewhere on the bike, but i highly doubt it.

you could probably use whatever gauges...

If the bike runs now, the immobilizer is either disabled or not 'married' yet.

You should be able to run any gauges you like.

when i asked him for the original gauges he said that he cannibalized them, is there a way he could have taken out the part from the old gauges that talked to the immobilizer to get this gauge to work. I took off the fairing and there are a whole bunch of wires just sitting there. It looks like a real hack job install. I'm trying for a lot cleaner look. Thanks for all the info guys!

Yes, he could have removed the circuit board from the original gauges, and left it 'in the circuit'.

It's a fairly large circuit board, search around on the bike and see if you find it.
He may have hidden it under the tank.

I know this thread has sat a while since the last post, but since I was searching archives for a somewhat related topic I'll add the following for future reference:

00-01 S4 has a separate immobilizer which is mounted on the front of the airbox.  02+ models have the immobilizer in the gauge cluster.
