Title: Here's one for you boys and girls partaking in the church of Ducati....
Post by: 916_tommy_s4 on October 07, 2009, 05:44:02 AM
Okay here's my query, feel free to state why or why not.

Now, let me set the stage here. Ive been away from these forums of late cause I got my bits back for the s4. So Ive been out making sure they work... as you do.

This got me thinking, watching other riders out there it occured to me there seems to be two different types(well, there's many different types, but I'm making the rules right now)

Leaners. the ones who stay fairly central on the bike and lean the whole thing way over.

Hanger-off-erer. These are the ones who hang their arse off the side of the bike when cornering, whether its cause they think they're motogp riders, or the fact that keeping the bike itself more upright allows for more cornering speed. Whatever.

My question is this, are you a leaner or a hanger-offer-er? Now i realise we do both but you tend to do one more that the other when you are really riding hard... I'm a hanger-off-erer. Mostly cause I love  the feeling.

Indulge me...

For me it depends on a few factors. Weather conditions, tyre conditon and road conditions and mind/head conditions. If i had to choose I'd say I'm a leaner.
As for hanging off just so you can get your knee down or what ever I've always been taught / told that you don't need to "hang off" to get your knee down If that's what your trying to achieve. Shoulder and head position I think is more important.

enough of my dribble...............

I'm a leaner, I have never been a big believer of going to hard core on public roads, you can never allow for the dickhead factor, people run wide on corners, drivers don't look before turning in front of you, Etc, Etc.
Then you have to allow for poor roads, spills, potholes.

If I was going to a track day I would go and do some courses and learn how to extract the best from my riding technique, but with my nearest track about 2500km's away, and no decent riding Schools up here, I just take it easy and have some simple fun.

I began as a learner with my ass firmly planted on the seat.
Now I have developed into a hanger, not to say I am trying to get my knee down (far from it)
You don't have to hang your entire ass/body off the bike IMO.
It can be done in moderation to allow for a more upright bike position when cornering.

no more than half of your ass should get off the seat but for me its depends on a couple of factors mainly how fast im going and road condition ,if im having a go then theres no choice you have to move around , if the road is wet i get of too , if the road is good and im tired the i just drop the shoulder so its a  personal thing and where your riding  [thumbsup]

Well I had started to move towards moving my bum around a little ... with no desire or talent to get anywhere near the ground. It was more a means of keeping the bike more upright in an effort to keep Jukie within sight.

But a couple of things have changed recently and I have found myself barely moving on the seat at all:

. Full leathers. Although a relative thing, I am not as flexible with armoured pants as I was wearing draggins and I feel a bit limited.
. Proper suspension. Now that I am not wrestling with the bike so much I can stay put and it seems ride so much smoother and probably quicker without all the effort.

Oh yeah and probably the fact that someone has lost a little riding mojo ... perhaps I just seem a bit quicker.

I'd say leaner mostly. I have a late model supersport and the shape of the rear of the tank + the rubber pad/lump thingo tend to lock me into a single position while riding. That and my lack of riding ability  [roll]

Put me down with the leaners.

When i hit the corners with the gas on my cheeks pucker up that tight i can't break the vacume between my bum and the seat.
And thats were my bum firmly stays, might vasso the seat [laugh]

Cheers everybody, good reads, good opinions, and some good laughs!

Yeah I just prefer to move around a lot, I'm a bigtime weight transference-type guy. And despite what I may have typed(most likely an exaggeration in the heat of the moment) I don't tend to hang right off the side of the bike (most of the time anyway!) and I have no interest in putting my knee down.

Its just something I thought I'd ask cause they guys I go riding with the most are both leaners, and they like to go fast on the straight stuff, whereas I just love those twisties, and am throwing myself around on the back of the bike then waiting for them to catch up on the straight. Its only about personal choice is all, and I dont think one is better, I was just curious. So thanks every single one of you for your reasons and why you're a leaner or a hanger, as it were. Keep em coming. Or should I say leaning.... or hanging..... whatever.

hanger offerer er er. like bazz i only move my bum half off the seat, and it's for a couple of reasons, i'm only short so there's no way i'm getting my knee down on public roads but dropping the shoulder and getting my knee forward (rather than sticking out like a wayward boom) weights the front of the bike, also keeps it a little more upright so you can go faster. hanging off also helps with change of direction too, cause moving your bum from side to side encourages extra leverage on the bars making direction changes quicker. this is only when i'm in the mood to go fast, if the wife is on the back or i'm just plodding along i keep my bum planted on the seat.

paul.
p.s fast is a relative thing, my fast may be embarassingly slow, probably is actually............. [roll]

I think Pigmy would be a leaner, if he tried to hang off he would probably fall off, by the way anyone heard from him lately?

Depends on how slack I want to be or whether road is wet.  So leaner when lazy, hanger offerer when wet or need to ride properly - like when I'm on a social ride with the Victorian  manager of Stay upright.  cos they teach you to hang off.
