I'm stoked that my Twins pulled out the win against Detroit last night!  Not sure if they're strong enough to pull out some wins against the Yanks, but I'm really happy with how well they played late in the season.  Despite losing Morneau to injury, they've gone 17-4 in their last 21 games!   :o  [thumbsup]

Go Twins!

Phils, Yanks and it looks like the Dodgers.

I don't think the Twins have enough pitching to hold off the Yankees.

Agreed.  Should still be a fun series to watch, though.

It will be interesting to see if Wainwright can bring the Cards even with the Dodgers.
Who is pitching for Philadelphia in the 2nd game?
Angels-Red Sox could be the most entertaining series.

Yet another year without a Clevleland Indians v. Chicago Cubs world series.

Great Twins/Tigers game.  Always easier to watch those type of games with no rooting interest.

Yankee baseball is back!  It must be October if The Captain is performing his heroics!!!!

As a life-long Yankee fan (and that's a long time!), I have a better feeling about this group than I have had for years. They look primed to make a run.

For all the detractors who complain about the Yankee payroll, a few points:

- spending money in baseball is no guarantee of winning. There are lots of examples of this, including the Yankiees themselves.

- small-market teams have done well despite not spending the big bucks. Twins are a prime example.

- as a Yankee fan, I look at it this way: The Yankees make the most money and they should be spending the most money. Whatever you think of the organization, under the Steinbrenners', they have always spent money in an attempt to win. Not always wisely, I should add.

Contrast: A few years back, the Brewers, then controlled by Selig's daughter, received $40 million in luxury tax money. They spend none of it on personnel, but distributed it among the partners.

Baseball is a funny, unpredicable game, which is why we like it. Mariano Rivera breaks Luis Gonzales' bat with a devasting inside pitch, and it ends up as the game-winning hit.

Go figure...

I used to be anti-salary cap, but watching more competitive hockey makes me like caps. Baseball's payroll is wacky.
Title: Re: 2009 Baseball Playoffs
Post by: nicrosato on October 08, 2009, 08:57:15 AM
Yes, it is. And it's skewed to giving the large market teams an advantage. The luxury tax doesn't really even things out.

The NFL has had revenue-sharing as long as I can remember. Of course, a national TV contract simplifies it. And the salary cap, so a player gets essentially the same money playi8ng for the Packers or for the Giants.

The NBA has what, a contract that guarantees a percentage of gross revenues goes to the players.

Baseball is very wacky this way.

Even the umpires are Yankees fans! Can't get better than that, right? [roll]

With calls like that, the Yankees are certain to win this series.

Yes, it was a bad call.  But can't guarantee it would've led to anything other than Mauer on 2nd.

Instant replay. There is a perfect example of why it should be used in baseball.

No, there are certainly no guarantees on how it might have turned out.  But this is the general consensus:

http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/sports/baseball/11pins.html?_r=1&ref=baseball (http://www.nytimes.com/2009/10/11/sports/baseball/11pins.html?_r=1&ref=baseball)

"If Cuzzi had made the proper call, Mauer would have had a ground-rule double. If the Twins had followed with back-to-back singles, as they went on to do, Mauer would have scored the go-ahead run. Instead, the Twins loaded the bases with no outs and failed to score. Mark Teixeira's homer won it in the bottom of the inning."

Cardinals, Red Sox and Twins are headed for the golf course.

As a Yankee fan, I obviously want them to beat the Angels. But, just as important, the nation needs to avoid the spectacle of an all-California World series.

+1 on that.

Besides, as I pointed out before, spending money guarantees nothing in baseball. It's just nice to see ownership that puts winning on the field on par with running a money-making business.

So, Yankees-Angels and Phillies-Dodgers, who do we like?  For me, a coast-to-coast Yankee-Dodger World Series would be the most compelling (the Torre angle and all that). Angels-Dodgers or Phillies-Yankees would both be good series, but I like the time zone thing.

Yankees and Angels head back to the west coast with Yankes up 2-0. While I'm sure the Yankees would like to win 2 games out there, 1 out of 3 would mean a game 6 back in NY and I think they'd take that. It's all about pitching now.

That double play call (or no call) at 3rd was pathetic...and Swisher was out by a mile trying to get back to 2nd. Horrible umpiring (word?)...especially the call at 3rd.

The Angels got a break with yet another bad call for Swisher leaving 3rd early though.

However, none of the bad calls made a bit of difference in the game. CC was on fire again...as was A-roid.

love them Yankees.  [thumbsup] We going to finish up the Angels, and take home the World Series... It would have been great to see Torie battle it out with NYY, it would be EPIC.  but unfortunately the Phillie got the Dodgers..

Teams like the Yanks and Sox have a long heritage and because of this has a huge fan base.  I hate it when people hates the Yanks for no good reasons.  They spend the $$$, for a better chance to win.  If they have it, Spend it.  At the end of the day, we want to win, and they are willing to put money on it...

oddly enough i dislike NY teams for the same reason you like the yankees.
the media seems to drone on and on about them. i'm tired of hearing about it.

plus philly is like the little brother. they get mentioned every now and then, but the oldest kid gets all the praise.
it sucks being the #4 market on the east coast.

This should be a great series matching two very good and very similar teams- the #1 & #2 home run hitting teams, both good defensive teams and neither seeming to have an edge in pitching.... Well, except for Mariano Rivera.

The Irony Factor: Two ex-Cleveland lefties going head-ti-head.

All games are in the Eastern Time Zone. With apologies to the Dodgers, the Angels are the next best team after these two.
