Title: Low oil pressure after riding for a while
Post by: ElCap on October 07, 2009, 11:20:36 AM
Hi,

I have a peculiar problem. The oil light on my S4 lights up after riding for a while. When starting the light goes on, then of again, as expected. Then the bike runs perfectly for about 10 minutes, then the oil pressure light start to "flicker" on on low rpm's. When revving the engine the light goes of. Then after another 5 min of riding the light stays more or less on all the time. I just changes the oil and filter with no effect.
Anyone know what this could be. Is it harmfull or just annoying.

One of two things here. Failing sender or actual loss of oil pressure. I would clean the connection to the sender and restet then change the sender and retest.

Test the oil pressure with a manual gauge.

Cold  1100-1300RPM 2.5 bar or higher  3500-4000  4-6 bar
Hot   1100-1300RPM 1.1 bar or higher  3500-4000  4-6 bar

Don't know what country you might be in, so if you're like me and have trouble finding a metric oil pressure guage here is the conversion.

  2.5 bar=36.5 psi
  1.5 bar=21.5 psi
  4 bar= 58 psi
  6 bar= 87 psi

1.1 bar = 16 PSI

One of two things here. Failing sender or actual loss of oil pressure.

Firstly, _be careful_! It might not really be low oil pressure, but if it _is_ you'll do expensive damage running it...

Also, I'll add another (hard earned) possibility... Has the right hand side cover been off recently? I once put mine back together and left out the oring that connects up the oil gallery that leads to the pressure sender. It'd switch the light off when the oil was cold and thick, but as it got up to temperature the oil got "runny" enough that the un-sealed connection oozed out oil quickly enough to lower the pressure _at the sender_. The motor was getting it's oil just fine, it was just the bit of the oil system that fed the sender that was running under-pressure.

The astute of you may have already worked out the nastiness of this particular error of mine... When I got a pressure gauge to measure the oil pressure, it was measuring from the oil pressure sender hole - in the underpressure bit of the oil system... D'oh!
