There is no chin behind this ride's beard. There is only another fist. If you have five dollars and this ride has five dollars, this ride has more money than you. This ride can sneeze with its eyes open. This ride can kill two stones with one bird. When the Boogeyman goes to sleep every night, he checks his closet for this ride. This ride doesn't read books. It stares them down until it gets the information it wants. There is no theory of evolution. Just a list of creatures this ride has allowed to live. Outer space exists because it's afraid to be on the same planet with this ride. This ride does not sleep. It waits. This ride is the reason why Waldo is hiding. This ride counted to infinity - twice. When this ride does a pushup, it isn't lifting itself up, it's pushing the Earth down. This ride's hand is the only hand that can beat a Royal Flush. This ride can lead a horse to water AND make it drink. This ride doesn't wear a watch, IT decides what time it is. This ride can slam a revolving door. This ride does not get frostbite; this ride bites frost. Anyway, I thought Bruce Lee killed him a long time ago? Clearly you didn't read any of the facts. [roll] OT: I bet in real life Bruce Lee would beat Chuck Norris; although, Tony Jaa would beat 'em all. (http://i44.tinypic.com/vdn95s.gif) Anyway, back on topic ... So we have four guys confirmed, does that mean guys and girlfriends? ... Hoyden? It looks like route #1 is in the lead, and I think that's our best route, but I bet we're open to persuasion, or at least discussion, if someone feels strongly one way or the other. Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Dietrich on October 19, 2009, 10:27:03 AM Bump for an awesome ride. Anyone else in? My chain is on it's way out so I'm going to carry a grapling hook & coil of rope bungeed to my back seat in case it breaks and drops on the road. Whoever passes me don't mind the slight tug. If I can work it like water skiing I might pass you in a couple corners, but don't worry, it'll only be temporary. [moto]

I will bring my work clothes with me however so I can just head right there from where ever I make it to with you.
Looking forward to a fun first ride with you folks! Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: rule62 on October 22, 2009, 10:27:25 AM BTW: JEROMATHERAPY is this weekend. Tons of bands playing. Might be some traffic, but we should definitely plan to spend some time there. It'll be awesome!!!
Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Dietrich on October 22, 2009, 11:01:38 AM Ryan - Do you have more info on the bands? Might make parking tricky depending on the timing. We're leaving early enough that hopefuly we can miss a lot of the traffic, etc.
Michael - Did you have meal/gas stops planned out? I figured some coffee/quick bite at the meetup spot if I can get there by 6, but we'll need some breakfast maybe in Prescott? With a decent size group that's an hour at least. I know a couple spots. Light lunch in Sedona? If we gas at Waffle House (there's a station right there) we can make it all the way to Prescott, about 85 miles. Gas in Prescott. Then Gas in Sedona ~65 miles. Then maybe stop somewhere along I-17 on the way home to break up that ride? (a bit over 100 miles back to Phoenix.) Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: pennyrobber on October 22, 2009, 11:21:06 AM I have to be back in town at a reasonable time. Don't think I will be sticking around in Jerome for the festivities. If we get breakfast in Prescott, we should skip food at Waffle house otherwise we will not be leaving the valley till closer to 8:00. Also, I agree that a quick bite in Sedona would be better than Jerome as there are only a handful of restaurants and all are mind numbingly slow.
Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: rule62 on October 22, 2009, 11:39:54 AM It's an all weekend type of thing. I don't have a set list. My office-partner is going up Friday night. I agree that it'll take forever if we want to eat there, but we should definitely stop there for a while. Stretch, listen to a band, taunt some hippies, grab a root-beer, etc...

Breakfast - I wanted to eat at Waffle House at 6:00am and then leave by 7:00am. And the idea there is if some guys didn't want to get up that early to be there by 6am, or were running late, then they would at least have that hour window. So kickstands up -- gas in tank, food in stomach -- by 7:00am Jerome - I'm all for stopping in Jerome, but nothing more than just a rest stop or a quick lunch. I'm with Chuckles, I got stuff going on in the afternoon I've got to get back to. Eating and Getting Gas - No pun intended. I think Dietrich has the right idea. And whether we eat lunch in Jerome or Sedona is fine by me. I eat light anyway. It sounds like Jerome would be a cool place to eat lunch, and we could probably beat the lunch crowd, even if there are events going on there that day. And if it turns out to be mad crowded, then we can just skip it; if not, then I'd love to hear a local band while I eat. Rest Stops I'd like to stop more often than not, even if it's just to pull off to the side of the road and shake out my arms. I don't have fancy-pants cruise control or grip pads, so I find my right arm and hand need regular breaks or they'll fall asleep. Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Dietrich on October 22, 2009, 02:48:27 PM I eat light anyway. [laugh] riiight! Mr.DoublePiezoockie! hahaha! [thumbsup]I'd like to stop more often than not, even if it's just to pull off to the side of the road and shake out my arms. I don't have fancy-pants cruise control or grip pads, so I find my right arm and hand need regular breaks or they'll fall asleep. I think a few of us are used to running through a tank of gas without stopping, but I'm sure you won't have any complaints about a rest here and there. Just make it somewhere scenic, give plenty of signal before pulling off, and we'll get some pics! Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: brickdogg on October 22, 2009, 05:29:46 PM Michael,
count me in, how long do you expect the whole circuit to take? I am trying to figure out how far I can ride before I need to split off to head to work. Thanks! Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Michael on October 22, 2009, 07:35:14 PM If we leave right at 7:00am, go 75 mph non-stop, never slow down, then we'll all be home before 11:00am.
Seriously though, I'd guess 2:00pm (maybe 3:00pm at the latest). Google says it'll take 6 hours, but someone else might be able to chime in and give you a more life-experienced answer. The problem though, brickdogg, is that you can't just turn around and go back the way you came. I mean, you can, but that will be longer than the second leg of the trip (straight down I-17). Here's what I would do, when we get to Prescott (just after we leave Jerome) decide whether or not to continue on to Sedona with us. If we're in Prescott and you have to be home within 2 hours, turn down highway 69 south and take the I-17 back to Phoenix. However, if we're in Prescott and you have at least 3 hours to spend, then continue on with us for the rest of the trip. Now, I'm just using Google maps to recalculate the route, and I don't know what part of town you actually live in. If you're in AJ, then add another hour to that little scenario. What time do you have to be home, anyway? Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: IZ on October 22, 2009, 07:59:27 PM The ride is going up Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks and back down, right?
Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: brickdogg on October 22, 2009, 09:12:04 PM thanks Michael, that is kinda what I was thinking of doing. I have to be at work at about 1:30-2:00. I intend to go right to work so no extra stop at home or anything.
Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Dietrich on October 23, 2009, 06:36:35 AM The ride is going up Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks and back down, right? Doesn't look like it IZ. That would add a bit of time as it puts you nearly to Flag when you pop back out on I-17. The first map in this thread is the proposed route. For what it's worth I've made it from my house to Prescott in under 2 hours. Of course I was trying to catch up to the rest of the group when I overslept. [evil] If you plan to turn around in Prescott I would vote for going back the way we came, through the twisties. White spars is the most fun road in the state IMHO. Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Michael on October 23, 2009, 06:57:57 AM The ride is going up Oak Creek Canyon switchbacks and back down, right? Well, no ... like Dietrich said, we're just planning on Route #1. Route #3 included Oak Creek Canyon and only one person voted it, versus the four people who voted for Route #1. And the road up Oak Creek Canyon was really the only difference between those two routes. Although ... for the sake of discussion ... if we just go up Oak Creek Canyon, not all the way to I-17, and come back down and then on Highway 179 as planned, that might be more appealing to the guys who didn't want to vote for #3. Here is what that route would look like -- click here for map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&source=s_d&saddr=W+Deer+Valley+Rd&daddr=E+Center%2FUS-60+W%2FE+Wickenburg+Way+to:AZ-69+N+to:Arizona+89A+N%2FPrescott-Jerome+Waterway%2FUS-89+Alt+N+to:Arizona+89A+N+to:35.02954,-111.733618+to:AZ-101+Loop+W&geocode=FWz5AQIdjjxR-Q%3BFcwrBgIdKChI-Q%3BFRIoDwIdpCVM-Q%3BFfb6EQIdzuxQ-Q%3BFYz5EwIdrhFW-Q%3B%3BFYDMAQIdJhVT-Q&hl=en&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=5&sz=15&via=1,2,3,4,5&sll=35.026306,-111.731043&sspn=0.023757,0.029483&ie=UTF8&ll=34.76982,-111.768036&spn=0.762586,0.943451&t=p&z=10). Is anyone opposed to that? It'll add 34 miles to the trip (and probably another half hour at least), but I'm sure it'll be beautiful. Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Dietrich on October 23, 2009, 07:04:14 AM If traffic is light, and we're making good time I might be up for a run up the canyon. Every single time I've been through there though I just get stuck behind RV's, gaggles of harleys, or white-knuckled automobile drivers.

I would figure on rolling back to Phoenix around 3pm. If you need to be back earlier then cut out at Prescott, which will still be an awesome group ride and save you at least a couple hours. The fact is even though on bikes we tend to have a higher average speed than autos & trucks, we make more stops for gas, rests, pics, etc., so it really takes about the same time the mapping sites suggest. Plus food stops. Really looking forward to this one, hope to see some new faces! If not, then I'll ask those people individually before announcing it. I'm pretty much always the sweeper. Sometimes by choice, other times by displacement. You rock like a survivor! See you all in about 20 minutes! DG

Great ride Michael! Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: DG on October 24, 2009, 05:29:22 PM I had a great time! Good riding with all of yooz. Safe and spirited! That trip home on the 17 was pretty cool. I was averaging around 85 I figure, over 100 at times, AND in the back too? The dashing in and out of the lanes as they cleared, in formation, making a lot of "quacking" as we screamed by everyone on the downhill...it was great! I did have a little trouble getting myself down to a "legal" velocity when I went 51 South to the 10 though. Oh, and the turnoff at Mill was crazy! It is really, really hard to go 50 mph let alone 40 after rolling so fast. See you all soon! DG

Such lovely roads....I love the south west more and more. Thanks ya'll! :) Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: brickdogg on October 24, 2009, 08:15:21 PM I had a great time as well. It was very cool to be able to put some tags with some faces, though I am sure it will take me a few more rides to really have good grip on everyone.
That being said, this was my first real group ride and my first time up in the twisties, so if anyone has any constructive feedback on my riding style/technique or group ettiquite, feel free to PM me. I look forward to more fun rides in the not to distant future. Robert Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Dietrich on October 24, 2009, 09:18:02 PM GREAT ride! I'm glad everyone enjoyed it, and I'm glad everyone got home safely. Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: DUCMS4 on October 26, 2009, 09:35:11 AM YIP - fantastic day all round.
To be honest going down 17 got a little hectic at times, so I'm very glad to hear everybody made it safely home. I had an absolute BLAST [thumbsup] Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: Michael on October 26, 2009, 09:46:15 AM A few miles after Camp Verde (on I-17) we started getting a lot of cross wind, and I just couldn't keep up with the group speed for the rest of the way.
If we didn't break off from you guys at Corder Jct to stop and rest I think I would have fallen off my bike from fatigue. Title: Re: Group Ride: Sedona -- Saturday, October 24th (morning) Post by: rule62 on October 26, 2009, 10:04:54 AM lot of cross wind, fatigue I was really feeling it in my legs yesterday... and still a bit today. The view coming out of Jerome was beautiful, Sedona was beautiful, but with all of the traffic/construction there it wasn't nearly as enjoyable as the twisties between Congress and Jerome. The slow going let me do a little neck craning sight seeing of the beautiful red mountains. |
