Title: Who's ever had their sticker checked? Post by: Justo on October 12, 2009, 12:44:01 AM So I've been thinkin. With the aussie dollar so strong and lids so much cheaper abroad maybe I should go offshore for my next helmet. But it's only the AS sticker that's stopping me I suppose.
Surely if u had a nice shiny arai or shoei for example, it's not gonna draw too much attention from the boys in blue. Who has ever has theirs checked by a copper? ??? Title: Re: Who's ever had their sticker checked? Post by: DUCMONROB on October 12, 2009, 01:22:42 AM I have heard that if you are found wearing a helmet without a AS label is the same fine as not wearing a helmet.
Thats here in NSW. Robs two cents. [bacon] Title: Re: Who's ever had their sticker checked? Post by: Six95 on October 12, 2009, 01:28:52 AM Don't do it.
I was checked not too long ago at a RBT, I had my wife on the back too. She was checked as well. I was nearly bluffed by a local on-line dealer who sells them cheap, It was only after some Q & A that he told me that his helmets were not AS1698 but were OK for use in OZ because they still had the American or British (can't remember which one) standard sticker on them. The one I want is not available here yet, I'm just gonna pay the extra $$$ and just get the AS one and avoid any troubles. I'm only going to assume that the fine will outweigh the saving benefit. Plus if you get fined, you'll have to buy another helmet which adds cost on it again. Easy maths! Title: Re: Who's ever had their sticker checked? [leo] [leo] and qld. also, if the worst happens and you suffer a head injury, the care costs tens of thousands and insurance companies will weasel out of paying if it's not AS approved, you don't want your family to have that burden along with everything else as well. paul. The TAC (Thirdy Party Insurer) and the Guvmint here in Vic is actually looking at just that!! If you donthave approved/suitable bona fide riding gear on your claim will be/could be minimised. ??? I dont know if I have a problem with that though, as I'm sick of paying ever higher premiums because of the knobs in shorts and T shirts getting fixed up on the back of my premiums. [roll] As with most things, you make the decision, you pay the cost!! [roll] Title: Re: Who's ever had their sticker checked? Post by: Betty on October 12, 2009, 12:48:29 PM Recently saw a link describing something like this in the US ... where the insurance situation is obviously quite different. Although the other party was clearly at fault, the rider had their damages claim (for persoanl injury and associated rehab. costs) reduced due to contributory negligence as they weren't wearing full gear ... kinda scary really.
In terms of the helmet I would also be very mindful of the fit. Just because you are ordering the same size and type you tried on locally does not mean it will fit the same. I am not suggesting it is the case for all manufacturers but I remember reading somewhere that the good guys (I'd say either Arai or Shoei as the most likely) actually shape their helmets differently for various markets around the world ... of course it may just be marketting bullshit. Plus the AS sticker is pretty obvious up close (eg. if pulled over). Title: Re: Who's ever had their sticker checked? Post by: mattyvas on October 12, 2009, 01:04:51 PM No I haven't ever had my lid checked.
I'll buy bling from OS no problem but I won't buy anything clothing/protection related. For things like that you have to try it on to see how it fits. That's my 2c's Title: Re: Who's ever had their sticker checked? Post by: dragonworld. on October 12, 2009, 01:47:29 PM With lids, I guess there is the possibility of a company making a product for a certain market!!
If the standards of that market are lower, and therefore the helmet does NOT have to be made to a higher level, potentially it can be made cheaper (and nastier?? [roll] ) You have to ask the question, will it do the job if the unfortunate situation arises?? :o (Goes with all gear I reckon!! ;D) I reckon it'd suck (and add insult to injury [evil] ) having yer head banged up because the helmet didnt do the job and then getting handed a fine for a non-approved lid! :( [leo] I'd rather a tested known quantity than an unknown!
