Title: Rain reminders
Post by: somegirl on October 12, 2009, 11:30:17 AM
First big storm is coming this week, so make sure you are prepared.

- Time to break out the warm waterproof gear
- Don't forget the first part of the rain brings up all the oil etc, if possible wait a bit to let the slick stuff get washed away
- Painted lines, metal surfaces, Botts Dots, leaves, tar snakes etc get very slippery in the wet
- Allow extra time/distance for braking and cornering (I tend to use both brakes in the wet)
- Keep in mind the bad weather tends to knock branches and/or rocks onto the road so keep a lookout for them.
- Visibility can be poor so assume you are even more invisible than usual

Ride safe everyone. :)

Good thread, SG.  I'm probably going to take public transportation if this one is anything like they say it's going to be.  I don't mind a little rain and some brain-dead drivers, but the wind is supposed to be strong, too.  That and it's the first storm?  That's too much bad joo-joo and I've been riding that bridge for 6-1/2 years now rain or shine.  Just sharing my thoughts with people who might be considering riding during the next couple of days.   [moto] safely.

+1 on car/BART/etc. on the first rain of the season. All kinds of sludge and goo oozes up out of the pavement for your traction amusement.

But I'm on a plane to Barcelona tomorrow, so no worries for Mikey.

All this talk of rain, I look it up all last night and this morning and everywhere kept telling me it was going to start when I was at work.  I took the safe route today and drove and still... no rain.  I feel like I wasted a day.

Nah...he might be right.  The news likes to over-report on the weather here.  I think it's because we really don't get weather.  The second a drop falls and a leaf moves it's a "major storm".

I figured whatever happens this winter I don't want to ride the very first day it rains.  Way too much oil and garbage coming off the road.

I figured the further along we got, the more accurate the report would be.  I was wrong.  They are still just using voodoo.

It's definitely slick.  It was drizzling in one part of SOMA this evening and I just barely touched the brakes and slid a little.  I was riding down the center of the lane (shouldda known better) and probably caught some of the road goo deposited there.  I tippy-toed around town after that and of course had to cross about 50 train tracks.   :P

Hopefully the overnight rain will have washed some of the goo away.

My favorite this morning in the rain some jerk-off is behind me flashing his lights for me to move out of his way (I was in my work truck) as if there weren't a million other cars in front or me. He passed on the right weaving between cars/lanes. Then about 5mins later I leisurely pass him with the flow of traffic and he is just putting along in the #2 lane... I just glanced at him with a WTF?! look and gave him a head shake of disappointment. I just can't understand some people.

Me too.  If the weather works to our advantage we may have some great riding this weekend.  Cool, crisp, clean air, great views from summits, light traffic.  I can't wait.  :D

What is it with people in cages in the rain? I had two cars riding my back fender this morning on city streets...I was on the FZ1, tooling along in the heavy rain. And these f-tards would drive right up on my 6 and sit there for a block or two.

Man, WTF?  This rain doesn't *seem* that bad, but everything is flooding, they're shutting down street and folks are acting like they'll melt if they get wet.  What's the deal?  Just seems like a storm.

He's gonna need more than just some water for that.  When it starts raining oceans of bleach or hydrocloric acid, I'll know Armageddon is nigh.

I hope all you wet weather riders had a good day yesterday.
Driving home from work at about 1pm I got to see something new. An 18 wheeler spin out and do 2 full 360s before slamming into a wall on the right side of the freeway. Freaking surreal to see something so big spinning like that 200 yards in front of your car.
CHP reported over 1800 accidents yesterday between 7am and 7pm.
Crazy day.

That's the stuff action movies are made of. You sure you didn't see Keanu Reeves jumping off the truck or something?

Nope no Keanu jumping of the top while riding a sweet 996.
