So I have been saving up for a new M1100... almost about to pull the trigger... but... the sport classic S keeps nagging at me. I LOVE the looks of the bike... but have some concerns about the ergos.... Any words of wisdom from anyone who has had one for a long time or taken long rides on it? I like medium hauls... LA to Seca...LA to Vegas... LA to (Away from my wife).... but i am also thinking of getting the GS 800 middle of next year. So that might cover my adventurous side. but do i stick with my beloved monster? or go with that sexy beast Sport GT 1000s? (i know... nice problem to have) [bang]
Heh, can't talk you out of it... the more I look at the Sport Classic series the more I am inclined to want one, I say go for it!
I REALLY want a SC, but I don't want the plastic tank issues. Of course, that won't help given the two you're debating between. Either way you're on a naked Italian bike. I'd say it's a win/win.
If you're getting the GS for sure, the M1100 would give you more diversity in the garage. Still, I am totally in love with the SC series.
The Monster 1100 has a newer slightly larger engine. It weighs less. It also has adjustable suspension and much better brakes. It probably has better ergonomics too.
I thought I wanted a SC1000 a couple years ago, but when I saw the SC1000 beside an S2R1000 Monster it looked way too wide and kind of fat. The tank looks too wide along with the tail piece. Also, the rear end is jacked up way too high. It ruins the lines of the bike.
Is the S model the red one with the black rims and fairing? Because that is a good looking bike.
The sport classics are hot. I'm still itching to get a SC touring model to keep my 696 company on those cold winter nights in the garage. Just gotta find a way to keep both bikes ;D

WOOOHOOO! found a friend of a friend whos cousin knows a guy that has a sister who is a stripper who has a client that knows a guy willing to lend me his Sport GT for the day if he can take my monster...!
Thanks for all the insight... i was expecting to get a bunch of "Hell NOs!" but glad to see there is not much bad press out there about the GT... and yes... i want to get the S... the one with the front fairing... it comes in black for 2010!!!

Plastic tank issues? The M1100 has tank covers, I wonder if the covers would hide any problems they would have.
BTW, get what you want, but if you're taking votes I think the Monster would be a better bike in a limited garage. The SC is the kind of bike I'd buy as a second bike.

Aren't the new tanks HDPE, so not susceptible to the swelling problem?

No clue but someone else mentioned it and my train of thought lead me to thinking "heck the actual tank is covered so what's the dealio?"
Well, the new Monsters are not as attractive as the older Monsters. If you're getting an 800GS then the SC1000S would be perfect.
If you are talking about a Sport 1000, then you should pick up a copy of the November issue of Motorcycle Consumer News Magazine.
They do a complete road test and and ride evaluation with all the pluses and any minuses which according to MCN are few.
They do a very in depth over view of the bike.
Out of 10 categories , on a 1-5, fair to excellent scale , the bike averages out to a 4.5 out of a possible 5.

The Sport Classic plastic tank issues are more common than the Monster plastic tank issues. So this could be a negative for the SC's. I haven't heard but perhaps the latest Monsters have this worked out with a better plastic polymer or perhaps they will start warping when enough time passes.
The tanks Acerbis makes for Ducatis that are under covers are cross linked polyethylene. PEX is the usual abbreviation. PEX does swell, but it is minimal and more uniform than what I've seen on the Nylon tanks. The new Monsters (696 & 1100) should do well with their tank covers. The Hypermotard and MH900e are two other Ducatis using PEX tanks under dedicated bodywork.

Well that sounds like good news and a positive for the M1100 and another reason not to get the Sport Classic.
I have had to replace the tank on my SC once, but it was a warranty claim so no cost to me. I'm sure it can be a pain in the ass, but mine conveniently came in while I was in Afghanistan, so the swap occurred while I was gone.
Now as far as the idea of getting one of these bikes goes, I can only say DO IT!! They are fabulous machines, but like anything else they do have their limitations. The stock suspension is not that great on the front end, unless you get a PS, and the stock wheels are seriously heavy, which will slow down the handling in a very noticeable way. But I will say that this bike had more character than any other bike I had ever ridden even before I threw all the mod money at it, and to ride it now? Well, let's just say that you had better hold on tight.
