Title: Baldwin Oil Filters
Post by: RB on October 15, 2009, 03:43:30 AM
Anyone ever use them? Specifically use them on a Ducati?
Thoughts....?

Baldwin Filters (http://www.baldwinfilter.com/home.html)

thanks

Nope.  I would rather not be the guinea pig.

No experience with them in Ducati's and didn't know they  made a filter for Ducatis.  I'd make sure Baldwin says that the filter is for a Ducati and not just some filter that someone discovered happens to fit.  Baldwin filters are common on Diesels and heavy equipment and are good quality.  Or at least used to be, no recent experience.   Whether that quality transfers over to bike filters, I don't know.  But if Baldwin has a filter for Ducati's and I saw one on a shelf and it was reasonably priced, I'd use it.

They do actually list a filter, B7292, for the Ducatis and corporate just confirmed this in an email. A friend of mine is a Baldwin distributor, mainly deals with ships and heavy equipment. His dad actually ran the business and has been using these filters in everything they have on their farm for years without issue.....tractors, cars, trucks, motorcycles.
I know years ago he compared a bunch of filters to Baldwins by cutting them up(this is what my friend told me his dad did for fun), to show his sons what makes a better filter.

Just asking if anyone had any experience. I really don't know if they are as 'good' a filter as claimed since everyone claims their filter is superior to another. I have been using the K&N-153 for years, no real reason to switch other then to try something new and support a local business.

I was a mechanic in the construction equipment rental business for 30 years. Had to use whatever brand filters corporate told us to (whoever submitted the lowest bid), and never had a quality related problem with any of them. Wix,NAPA, Baldwin, Fram. U name it, I've probably used it.

Just keep your oil and filter changed on a regular basis. I use 3000 miles. If there is ever any doubt about anything oil related, change it. Oil is a lot cheaper than engines.

Baldwin are supposedly good but hard to find. OEM from the dealer and declare victory.

My good friend is a Baldwin  distributor.
Turns out the filter is over $10.

Seems like last time I bought a filter from the dealer it was  $12.95 so over $10 is about market value for a quality filter.  And I'm assuming the Ducati branded filters are quality, which may be a stretch based on the paint job and packaging.  If I had a friend who was a Baldwin distributor I think I'd try and support his efforts by buying his filters, although I hope that a few bike filters aren't going to make or break his distributorship...

K&N.
Has a 17mm hex head on it. Makes torque it on (and removing it later on) really easy.

If I had a friend that dealt Baldwin filts for Ducati @ ~$10 per I'd buy all my filters from him and declare victory. I'd also buy all my car oil filters and others as well. I'd then be victorious. Save me a trip to the dealer. In a nutshell, I'd not be afraid to use Baldwin filters.

Asked for a filter at local Oz Ducati guru's workshop and he handed me a box, Baldwin B7292, made in Cypress, with a black filter inside. Hmmm I said, never heard of this brand, and Cypress, like what have I ever heard of that's made in Cypress before, have you got a genoon Ducati one ?

That's what I put in my customers 'bikes he said.

Been buying Duc stuff from this guy some 35 years. I will be putting this filter in next oil change.

OK not Baldwin but thought I'd throw this in seeing as we are mentionin compatible filters:

I'm using one now after coming up short a filter for last change, though I was abused a bit by local moto shop.
Ain't like the cage where I have stuff ordered today & arrive tomorrow for free.

After reading that thread awhile ago, by co-incidence my local independent shop sold me a Hi-Flo and it seems to be a good filter.  It's stamped Thailand, same as the K&N's.

Not a thread jack at all, yet.

I can't seem to clear my mind of the image of the beautiful and enchanting Thai girl who assembled my HiFlo filter.  I don't want to take the filter out from under my pillow and install it on my bike.

Boobies.

There, now we have a thread jack.  [evil]

I use hi-flos too.

My local auto parts store sells Baldwin. I'll pick one up and dissect it.

DP, I've got a new HiFlo and a new OEM Ducati filter, the newer type with the crappy paint job.  I've been thinking of doing the same thing and posting some pictures, although I'm not the best picture poster.  I also wanted to compare the old OEM Ducati filters with the new ones but couldn't find an old one.   I have one on my Cagiva Elefant that's overdue for a change so I suppose I could dissect a used one.   I'll try to dissect the HiFlo and OEM filters sometime the next few days.  Don't mind sacrificing the $20 or so for the sake of "science" since I've sure learned a lot on this  board.

I haven't used an OEM filter in years, and wasn't aware they'd changed.

The paint on the hi-flo isn't the best, but in all reality, it's a filter and gets changed at least once a year anyway.

Paint on an oil filter is a non issue to me.

The aesthetics of filter paint is a non issue to me also, but there are other considerations.

There was a thread right here on your tech board (Edit, Oops, I was thinking you were a moderator on the Tech section but I see you aren't so you can be excused for not knowing about the oil filter paint thread :)) a month or so ago about the "new" appearance of the OEM Duc filters.  The crappy paint and smeary lettering doesn't have anything to do with the filtering ability, but there was a concern that maybe Ducati had changed vendors and the quality inside of the filter was as bad as the outside, or that they were counterfeit.  Thus my interest in dissecting both an old and new filter to see if the internals are still the same.

I cannot tell a lie...

I don't read every thread. ;D

I probably would steer clear of a thread about paint quality of a filter. ;)

If someone is willing to do a filter comparison with the Baldwin filter, i am not qualified, i will gladly buy the filter or two and send it too you as long as you report back to the group with pictures and findings.

I think DP is already going to do the Baldwin.  I'm going to do a stock OEM filter and a HiFlo.  I'll try to coordinate with  him so we take similar pictures and open the filters in similar ways.

I would also be happy to do the Baldwin too, but I'll have to look around to find one locally.  No need to send one to me, as I'm happy to donate a few $$ to the cause of science.

FWIW I used em on HD diesels for years, no issues.  Used them on my personal vehicles as well.  I was not aware they made motorcycle filters.  Learned something new!

Your bud is a distributor, CASE LOTS!  Get your pals together, get case lot pricing!  Unless he extended that price as a favor already?  Baldwin is a long time quality filter manufacturer.  Without dissecting one I am confident it meets the OE specs, likely exceeds them.  And no I don't work there!   ;D

If my jobber has one I'll get it...no issues.

I just need to remember to do it.
