Title: What Bikes have you owned
Post by: MonsterDorf on October 15, 2009, 03:34:57 AM
Following on from the "what else do you like" topic I started thinking about the bikes I've owned. Thought it might be fun to trace our humble beginnings.

I'll go first (pics to follow):

1976 - Peugeot Moped

1978 - Honda CB50 (yep 50)

1980 - Honda CB250

1982 - Honda CB900F

1986 - Yamaha XT600

1988 - Kawasaki GPZ900

1990 - Honda XL250

1991- 95 Honda CX500

Many lost years............

2005 - Suzuki SV650

2006 - Ducati S2R

So my tally is 10 bikes in 33 years of riding.

OK, it might just take me a while to put this list together ... but bear with me.

2005 S2R Monster 800

Hey, it wasn't that hard after all. S'pose it helps to have your wife's (plus brother-in-law & father-in-law's) bikes at your disposal during the preceeding formative years.

Kwaka KX125 (not road legal, blew the piston out the side of the motor, left it where it dropped)
Kwaka KLR250
Honda VTR250
Kwaka GPX250
Ducati S2R 800

Still miss the KLR 250, liked the idea of riding along the highway, spot a dirt track, turn off the highway and see where it leads.

May add a dual purpose bike to the Garage again one day.

BMX bike with an imaginary motor (with pegs on the spokes for real engine sound ;D)

My father promised to buy me a motorcycle when I was a child and failed to deliver. After my unsuccessful attempts to transplant the Victa mower engine in to my Malvern Star, I was devastated. This in turn has resulted in an adult obsession with motorcycles which paved the way for.....

Kawasaki KLX80 (my first baby, race tuned, wicked little rocket, started my riding in the dirt)
Yamaha TTR125 (still enjoy riding in the dirt, still have this bike, got my licence on this baby)
Honda CBR250R (he was the love of my life, once long ago. Got evicted by the new Monster)
Yamaha VStar 250 (had this bike one month, outgrew it, moved on)  ???
Kawasaki ZXR250A (had this bike one month, never actually got to ride it, moved on) [coffee]
Kawasaki ZXR250C (still have this bike)
Ducati Monster 695 with Termignonis (my current bike, lowered fully sick because I am very little and can't reach the ground)  [evil] [laugh]

I am slowly working my way up in cc's. At 4foot 11inches, I am considering some leg extensions so I can reach the ground on a bigger bike. The platform enhanced Falco Boots have been brilliant. [thumbsup]

Second bike was a 84 Honda CB750

Third bike a 77 Honda CB400

and then in no particular order:  (and currently own)

1977 Ducati 500GTL
1980 Ducati Darmah SS
1949 BMW R51
1995 Ducati 900SP
1985 Cagiva Alazzurra 650SS
1985 Cagiva Alazzurra 650SS (yes, two..)
1986 Cagiva Elefant 650
1998 Ducati 600SS

Honda CB900F (gave mum lots of sleepless nights)
Kawasaki GT750

Short but sweet list...
KTM Super Duke
Monster S4RS

Looking for an old-school bevel Ducati to join the Monster.  I think a 74 750 Sport has my name written all over it.  I also love the singles, but my "6 foot fat bastard" proportions won't allow it...

a mate had a superduke, wanted something different, got talked out of a buell and bought the KTM, oh dear! what a mess, the oil pump shaft sheared off causing total engine destruction, i mean total! add to that he bought a warranty from the dealer, no worries! HAH! dropped the bike off for repairs and when he went back was told his warranty, that cost him a grand offered a maximum of $1000 for EITHER the motor, the chassis, or the bodywork. said dealer tore the bike apart, quoted $9000 to repair it and explained the limits of his paid for ($1000) warranty, oh and by the way, the bill for the quote was $985 dollars, so sir, you have a $15 credit at our dealership! my mate now rides a drz400 and has a superduke in bits piled up in a back room because the dealer told him he would have to pay "storage" if he didn't get the work done and didn't his bike home.
KTM = Keeps Taking Money
KTM = Kill The Mechanic
nice bike, but with dealer support like that i would catch the bus!

'77 Suzuki GT250
'88/'90 GSXR750
'91 GSXR750
'03 GSXR750
(didn't fall too far off the tree there, eh?)
'06 MS2R1k
'00 GSF250v bandit (bought for ex gf to teach her to ride)
'89/'91/box of shite CT110

The postie at the end has been an ordeal. Bought to teach my (now ex) fiancee how motors go back together. It got its first outing on Sunday, in a race! 3 lap Le Mans start postie challenge at a track day for another forum. Oh boy it was fun, sliding that beast around on 2.75" wide crossplies. Benefit of the postie is that, minus the front wheel, it fits in the boot of my car!

Said postie :P (I'm on the one in front)

That's stuff I've owned, I've had access to a load of other bikes through my old man and mates who needed storage for a while :).

LOL. I tried. I did do one cornering effort with pegs and centre stand scraping, and my arse completely off the seat & sitting on the bit of exposed metal next to it and still couldn't get it down. :)

My mods in the rebuild (see sig) gave me good handling but unfortunately a sorta dead CDI module means it's got a bit of a nasty miss and is down on power.

if you are really wanting to get it running, look into the ignitech setup.  replaces most CDI/sparker modules and works fine with 1/2/3/4 cyls.. the non-programmable version might be reasonable for you moneywise.  they program your advance into it and it's sealed for life.

Given the bike was something bought for the ex that I ended up with, nah, it's off to fleabay now i've got the jigsaw puzzle together and running 95%. Time for a new project.

As for racing - it was halftime entertainment at a trackday. By all accounts the onlookers thought it was awesome. :).

would love to hear your thoughts between the super duke...and the Duc!
I bought a new 06 Super Duke before my current S4RS.  At only 2500KM or so on the odometer, I had an unfortunate accident on the KTM after the gearbox locked up while in 4th gear.  Not while changing gear, perhaps half throttle, not mid corner, nothing out of the ordinary!!!
The resulting sliding and bounding down the road led to the bike being replaced.  KTM didn't want to listen to my concerns about the failure.  I sent them photos of the straight section of road, with a 30 foot long tire mark prior to me coming off the bike.  As the insurance company had paid for the bike to be removed from the scene, KTM saw it as an insurance (rather than warranty) matter.

I pushed the insurance company to see if they would send the bike back to KTM, but they seemed to just want to py the claim and be done with it.  I offered to go and strip the bike to found the exact cause of the transmission failure, only to be told that interfering with the bike now could lead to the insurance claim being knocked back...

Having said that, I am over the moon with the way the S4RS makes me feel when I ride it.  It's quicker accelerating, sounds better, looks better (IMO), less wind buffeting for my 6' frame.

I think the KTM out of the box had better initial turn-in than my tweaked S4RS, was a bit cheaper to buy initially, a bit cheaper on servicing, slightly more comfortable riding position (but only if you really thought hard about the differences), similar awesome front brake feel, but the rear brakes on the KTM felt wooden.  The KTM could accelerate away from the apex faster without pushing the front end out.  On a twisty road, I'd say I could ride quicker on the KTM.

Both great bikes, but I wouldn't even consider another KTM until I could be sure that the transmission wouldn't let me down.  Bouncing down the road at 75mph is not something I want to repeat anytime soon.

I like the purr of the 990 mill, thought it sounded great....then they hit me with the price....I'd be out of pocket 9 grand for something different, not necessarily better! for that I could buy a nice set of forged wheels and feel I got a whole new bike AND go on a nice holiday WITH some strippers AND beer too.  :o

or a down payment on a '05 999s  [evil]
