Title: Does your Helmet leave an impression on your face ?
Post by: DoubleEagle on October 15, 2009, 10:09:04 PM
I've noticed lately after riding for several hours , when I get home and take my Helmet off that the cheek pads have left an impression on my cheeks that doesn't leave for about an hour.

I don't know if this is indicative of a bad thing as far as Helmet fit or just a tight fitting newer Helmet ?

As log as you are not feeling discomfort or chewing your inner cheeks it is probably a good thing.  I have a full beard, so I have no idea if this happens to me.

If you are not uncomfortable/distracted, there isn't such a thing as too tight IMO. Remember that a helmet can't do it's job if it moves around on your noggin.

I get it a little bit, it was worse when I wore a balaclava with seams under my helmet.

That's what it's like, the outline of the cheek pad seams on a fairly new Arai Corsair V.

It doesn't bother me while riding , so I guess it's not a problem like previously said, the tighter the better.

That's the only time I have the impressions, people think they're "sleeping marks" and I just woke up.

My Shoei RF-1000 did that for a year.  Now it does not and it moves around WAY too much.  I replaced the cheekpads but I suppose I'm slightly less of a fathead.

thats why i dont like shoei. compared to the 3 other helmets i own, the shoei lost its shape very quickly and never fit the same way again.

With my Scorpion EXO700 the fit was consistent with how it originally felt (just a tad bit easier to slid in and out of after it broke in). My Shark RSI is an Small and it does leaves marks, but as long as you cant bite your cheek off, or get headaches, and the helmet is snug, id say dont worry about it. infact you should embroied the cheek pads so you get a cool logo on your cheek when yo utake the helmet off!

That is funny SHIT!  Now you gotta find somebody who can embroider a backwards Ducati Corse logo!  And thanks for the info on other brands, He Man.  The Shoei is my first real (read:more than $60) helmet and is in great need of replacement.  I'm gonna peep those Scorpions & Sharks.  Which one do you prefer?

ditto

I tried on a Shoei and the pads felt cheap (but the helmet sure wasn't).  I could feel when I put it on that it wouldn't hold shape very well.  My Exo700 rocks.  Little heavy, but fits snug an stays in place.  Like HeMan said, just a little easier to slide on after a bit of use.

I have  a fulmer helmet (not recommended) don't know what model.  I get a headache after riding for a few hours and when I take it off all my friends laugh at the big red mark on my forehead! ;D

Is that why they're not recommended?

Also, it's time for a new helmet-fitment is of the utmost importance-brand after that.

Agreed.  I will have a new one for next year.  This is why I dont like ordering them on-line.  You can't test them first. [thumbsup]

There are plenty of good articles on this enormously important subject on the DMF and if you google.

Realize that heads have basic shapes and that helmet manufacturers can't make any helmet fit everyone and still be worth a nickle.
You may have a round head, oval, semi-round etc. The asian helmets tend to fit rounder flat fore head asians - imagine that. They tend to give people with oval heads a big red mark on the forehead, and a head-ache. classic.
Shoe companies do the same. They choose one shape and go for it. Find yours! then check the ratings.

IMHO after much reading, I trust SHARP, and ECE ratings. Dot and Snell are kind of a joke in comparison IMHO.
Excuse the rant.

buying online isnt so bad if you know what you are getting into.

Shark has its own guarentee aside from a retailer. if it doenst fit you, you can return it for a full 100% refund.

So i bought a shark RSI on close out. if i sneezed i would break my front teeth. it was so make the beast with two backsing flat. Revzilla doenst accept returns on close outs but they took the RSI back. So i got credit for it and ended up buying a front tire.

THen i found the SHark RSR2 on super discount at motorcycle close outs, bought it, thing fits GREAT.

So even within the same manufacturer, you can have varying helmet shapes. It would be nice to have a shop that carried helemts to try, but most shops carry very very very few stock of helmets, so your choices are limited.

It seems that every store will carry the Shoei RF1000, Arai Qunatum, and Scorpion EXO400, as well as the low end HJC/KBC stuff.

go see a dermatologist, you can go around hiding it all the time with the helmet.

all this time i thought i was alone on this. i had the same issue w/ my old rf-1000. i loved the helmet but after a yr. it started feeling more loose. instead of changing the cheekpads i decided to sell it & picked up an arai rx-7 corsair. i had it for 2 yrs now & didn't have the same problem. i wonder if x-11 has the same problem or not? i would love to purchase 1 after reading all the great reviews.

sorry to go off topic but i was wondering if anyone has issues w/ agv titech helmets. i have 2 rossi replica helmets that hurt my ears everytime i put them on. when its on everywhere around my face & head feels snug & comfortable, but there's a lot of pressure on my (average size) ears. even after breaking-in the helmet the pressure still hasn't gone away. i know agv fits very snug compared to other brands, so is this normal?

for reference, i wear size large shoei rf-1000, size medium for arai rx-7 & size large for agv titech.

I was lucky enough to have a shop with a wide variety of helmets, I probably tried on 15 different helmets. In the end I had to change the cheek pads to get the proper fit. It made a huge difference. They were sold in a decent range of sizes, made all the difference for me.
