Title: Is paint flaking normal? Post by: numbskull on May 25, 2008, 10:33:38 AM My bike has 2000km on it and I've had it about 7 months now. Is it normal for the paint to start flaking? It seems to be only affecting the horizontal cylinder head as well as the front of the engine case close to the starter.

Replacing the heads or just getting them refinished? Either way, it sounds like I would be without the bike for a little while. It looks like I may have to do it at the end of the riding season.

I mean I had the same problem and it turned out to be that my valve cover screw vibrated a tad too loose so it was leaking oil, but the oil was not dripping! (Very hard to detect). Anyways, long story short leaking hot oil can cause flaking of engine paint IMHO. To check run your finger across the flaked area and see if you get any oil on your finger.
