My bike has 2000km on it and I've had it about 7 months now. Is it normal for the paint to start flaking? It seems to be only affecting the horizontal cylinder head as well as the front of the engine case close to the starter.
No, not normal.

Other than looking a little ugly, should I be concerned at all? I'm pretty sure that the bike hasn't been running that hot so I'm assuming that it's just some cheap paint being used.
your bike is still under warranty, if you choose to pursue it...
if your bike was abnormally hot, the dash would tell you so ;)
Warranty claim huh? Replacing the heads or just getting them refinished? Either way, it sounds like I would be without the bike for a little while. It looks like I may have to do it at the end of the riding season.
could be worse... I've been waiting, oh, 3 years for a callback from the dealer about the bubbly paint around my filler neck :D

3 years? Ouch!
[laugh]
esp. when the warranty was only for 2...
It seems like everyone around here and the other website jump the gun and start talking warranty. Have a little more faith in Ducati. I mean I had the same problem and it turned out to be that my valve cover screw vibrated a tad too loose so it was leaking oil, but the oil was not dripping! (Very hard to detect). Anyways, long story short leaking hot oil can cause flaking of engine paint IMHO. To check run your finger across the flaked area and see if you get any oil on your finger.

Thanks for the tip! Checked the area. There's definitely no oil anywhere. I'll keep an eye on it and should it get worse I'll have a tech take a look at it.
Is engine...or any paint flaking right?
No...
