Title: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Strafer on October 18, 2009, 07:27:54 AM For anyone interested, my `09 M1100S was delivered new with Termi slip-ons, matching ECU, and air filter. That's all well and good but, for my particular preferences, the straight-through mufflers were slightly too loud for comfort. So, I installed the Termi dB Killers and took a ride. As I expected, the Termi noise suppressors made the exhaust system too quiet (from one extreme to the other). :-\
I decided to cut off the closed ends of the Termi dB Killer tubes to liberate more sound and allow more gas flow. This combination produced a nice "middle-ground" growl that was not obnoxious and could easily be throttle-modulated to modest sound levels when desired. But...it was still just a tad too quiet for me so I completely cut out the dB Killer welds that hold them together and, sure enough, they fell apart into their component parts. At this point, I was only after the dB Killer "rings" (with nuts) to use minimally as diameter reducers in the muffler outlets. I installed just the rings, took another ride, and EUREKA...they sounded jusssst right for me. ;D With only the rings installed, the 1100 still has a strong bark when the throttle is blipped but the sharp "crack" of straight-through mufflers is somewhat attenuated. Obviously there is nothing scientific about this mod but if your Termis' are too loud without the dB Killers and too quiet with them, one of these dB Killer mod stages might be right for you. It works for me! Note: I did this at home using an air compressor and air grinder. It could probably be done with a Dremel tool too. ;) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers1.jpg) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers4.jpg) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers5.jpg) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers2.jpg) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers6.jpg) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers3.jpg) Cheers! Same 'problem' with M696... or with neighbours. [roll] Any before/after or with and w/o soundclips available ? Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Strafer on March 19, 2010, 02:37:22 AM rsy,
Sorry, no sound clips--I've had a health/physical therapy issue for a few months and haven't done much else lately. However, I can say with near certainty that cutting the dB Killer tube ends as shown below (Stage One of the mod) will incease exhaust sound and flow volume enough to satisfy most performance-oriented riders without attracting unwanted attention. It offers a really authoritative "bark" without being obnoxious. I'm willing to bet that the Stage One mod would not be too much bark for you, nor for you neighbors when the throttle is modulated, and...you could always make the Stage Two mod later if you want it even louder. Conversely, if it proves to be too loud, you could have the end caps welded back on. (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers5.jpg) (http://www.zenfire.ws/Ducati/dBKillers2.jpg) Cheers! ;) Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Povidius on May 08, 2010, 08:23:01 PM I might have to do this... neighbors are complaining that the termi's on my 696 are too loud when I warm it up for the morning commute. It's the bass/lower frequencies that wake them up.
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Strafer on May 09, 2010, 02:13:39 AM It's easy.
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: crimsoncloak on May 12, 2010, 03:54:46 AM On my Arrows I ended up cutting the db killer down to about a 1/3 its original length. So just the flange and two inches or so of tubing. It is about half as loud as straight through now, and retains most of the depth and smoothness in the tone that we all love. It is pretty quiet down low, and perks up when you get on the gas. I find it to be a nice balance.
It's so easy to test that I'd just cut the baffles down a few inches at a time and see where you think a fair balance between neighbors and mayhem occurs. Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: misterburns on May 12, 2010, 05:03:30 PM I need to find a spare set and give this a go. Anybody know where I can pick these up online?

Are Termis installed with an associated DP ECU calibrated for the pipes and air filter? If true I suspect a richer air fuel mixture is now present with DP ECU over the stock ECU. True or False assumption? If db killers are installed impairing exhaust gas flow does that mean the A/F mix is now too rich? Does it really matter? True or False assumption? If db killers are installed impairing exhaust gas flow does that mean the A/F mix is now too rich? Does it really matter? Yes, the termi kit comes with a highflow filter and a new ecu (to take advantage of the high flow filter and not so much the slip ons). Yes, the bike runs richer. "Does it really matter?" No. Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Raux on July 05, 2010, 11:05:57 AM how can the exhaust being restricted with the DB killers make it run richer? doesn't make sense.
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Povidius on July 06, 2010, 03:24:23 PM To clear up any confusion, I was saying the bike runs richer with the termi/dp ecu/filter AND NOT with the db killers.

Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Strafer on September 02, 2010, 01:00:53 PM I searched for dB Killers for my Termignoni mufflers and found none. :-[ Your searches might be more productive. I think any "tuning" difference will be very small either way and therefore not much concern in terms of air/fuel ratios. I suggest that you install the pipes first and go from there with dB Killer mods to your personal preference as the sound levels dictate.
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: sbrguy on September 18, 2010, 02:09:49 PM my mods to the db killers was more simple.
rather than cut off all of the inner tube, all i did was take the original db killer and the closed end, i drilled a 5/8 inch diameter hole right there so that there was a straight path for exhaust to go through. some have asked how this sounds. try this. put the db killers in before you mod them and listen to the exhuast. you will notice it it almost stock quiet but still has the distinct "termi" low rumble but very quiet. when i did my mods i first started with a 1/4 drill bit and drilled the hole and listened to them again. this made almost no difference. As you use larger drill bits to expand the hole the sound got louder but only in small amounts, when you go up to 1/2 inch diameter to 5/8 diameter you are no longer as quiet as stock at all, but you are not blatantly loud at idle either. you can definitely tell its louder than stock no doubt but when idling its nowhere near obnoxious at all, its only when you start to rev up to 3k rpm and higher does it now really get louder than stock by a good amount but again nowhere near as it would be without db in them at all. others do more drastic mods to the db killers, my mods to mine were much less drastic and make a very subtle change to them that i think most people would be happy with the sound that i get from mine, they still have the termi sound but it will no longer annoy neighbors. also if a harley with straight pipes pulls up next to me, you won't even hear my bike anymore at all. Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: jchurch on October 09, 2010, 05:40:40 PM Strafer: thanks for your DB Killer mod's advice. [bow_down]
After installing my slip-on kit this weekend I found with DB Killers in the bike was very quite, In fact I think the stockies were louder!! [thumbsdown] Anyways I completed your 'Stage 1' mod first however I didn't notice much of a difference, I then cut them down again past the holes but still not much of a difference. I then completed 'Stage 2' with the DB Killer 'ring only' and your right its nice but without the massive 'basey drone' that your neighbours/policeman hate. [thumbsup] BTW: I may be a little biased to some with the noise as I had a Ducati Monster M900I.E '02 before with baffles completely removed from stockies but I believe this is quieter than that with the 'Stage 2' mod in place. I decided to search around for a pair of 'spare' DB Killers just in-case. I was lucky enough that my cousin came through with a pair for me. However on my search I found that http://www.ducatiperformance.com/ (http://www.ducatiperformance.com/) can order these in for you. They don't have them listed on their site but I said to sales to list them up in which they agreed as I explained there is others looking. He explained they are $92.80 (US) for the set and would need to be ordered from Ducati Italy (2week turn around). Anyways if you really need them then this is an option for you. I sent you and email on termi pipes and would like to purchase the baffle end. The M 1100 termi is 1.91" in outside diameter. The stock inside exhaust pipe is 0.5". I did it to the db killers on my 696 this past weekend and I'm very happy with the results. Volume went from an 11 to about a 6 or 7. A lot less popping on no throttle down a hill as well. Still has the nice growl that isn't there stock.
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: mysticbluex3 on May 13, 2011, 06:40:21 AM I have the same problem with my Leo Vince CF Oval Evo IIs. Silencer installed, too quiet. Silencer out, too loud (for the neighbors). The Leo Vince silencers looks exactly the same as the Termis except it doesn't have any end caps, just a straight tube with a flange. I figure I can 1) cut the length of the tube smaller or 2) drill holes in the side of the tube. I don't think I can remove the flange or the ring as that's where the bolt is for mounting.

My biggest challenge was how was I going to get through the weld. Used a hacksaw, worked great and only took 10 minutes to do both DB killers. The cylinder just fell out once the weld got cut through. Very easy. Now the exhaust sounds PERFECT. Snarly and deep without being obnoxiously loud and attention hogging. If I ever do want it louder I guess I can always remove them. Before modification, they were just too quiet in. Great thread!
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: klone on May 01, 2012, 03:38:12 PM Just did the mod to my 1100S, I cut everything off to just leave the rings. Awesome balance of sound now, still loud but not too loud. I have a cheap db meter on my phone and it dropped the decibels by about 6 or 7. Like I say it is a cheap app so take it for what it is worth, however the sound is great. I kept taking the baffles out and then putting them back in, now it seems perfect.

Got the 47.5mm after getting in touch with him. Got this one, the legal look db eater since that was all he had in stock: http://www.desmoworld.com/shop/de/db-eater-legal-look.html (http://www.desmoworld.com/shop/de/db-eater-legal-look.html) The sound is sweet music. -drew Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: peppeducati on August 11, 2012, 07:21:41 AM I have a 2011 796 with termi carbons. Instead of modding the Termi db killers I ordered the DB killers in 47.5mm size from Desmoworld. After a week of nothing, I was delighted when I got a response back. A very helpful employee named Tina (I believe) processed the order. Cost me a little less than $50 shipped from Germany to CT and took about a week. The Desmoworld DB killers are a perfect balance, loud enough and I do not need to wear ear plugs. This also allowed me to save the stock termi db killers in case I ever sell the bike or pipes. The sound is very similar to my former bike (2006 S2R1K) which had Arrow pipes on with no baffles. I still can't believe how much louder the Termi's are than the Arrow's with no baffles. Strange. In any case I am very happy that I found a solution. Best $50 I have spent in a while!

There are a bunch of options in various shapes and sizes on their site and I can't seem to find a 47.5mm option (there are a couple of 47.65mm). The Termis are insanely loud! Louder than my Sport 1000 was with Termis with the db killers removed. Part of me likes it, but I'm certain the neighbours don't appreciate being awakened early in the morning, and I don't want to have to start wearing earplugs during my commute. Hopefully I receive a response (I never received a response to the last email I sent them, but that was over a year ago). No response to my email (yet), but these ones are available in 47.5mm: http://www.desmoworld.com/shop/de/db-eater-legal-look.html (http://www.desmoworld.com/shop/de/db-eater-legal-look.html) They are just the end pieces, though; do they look like what you have? Made little difference to me since they were going in the pipes.
I encountered slow email responses too. I think I found them on Facebook and sent them a message there and got a prompt response though. Hope you are as satisfied as I am with them :) Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Bishamon on April 20, 2013, 07:05:07 AM Thanks! I've tried to place an order; we'll see how it goes. :)
Title: Re: Termignoni dB Killer Mods (M1100) Post by: Bishamon on May 06, 2013, 12:49:56 PM Well, the DB killers arrived. They are quite nicely made, especially considering they won’t really be seen once installed.
Of course, now that I have them, I’m reconsidering installing them. lol Sometimes I like that the Termis are loud, and they look so much better with open ends. I’ve passed some cops and haven’t been stopped (yet), and the neighbors only made a ‘passive’ complaint – “So, you have been riding your bike to work...” ;-) I may just leave them out and hang onto them in case the police start cracking down. |
