Title: Got the Blessing
Post by: Setsukosan on October 20, 2009, 10:31:11 AM
My girlfriend (Katie) and I have been dating for two and a half years now. I recently asked her father for his blessing and he approved! woohoo. I am still waiting to pop the question and am debating how to do it. ^_^"

I was thinking about taking her for a hike in the nature, (she's a nature freak) and recite a poem that I have written with the big question within the poem. It's the perfect weather around here now. Cool enough not to be sweating like mad and not cold enough to need winter clothing.

Any suggestions, comments?

I'm assuming she doesn't read the DMF.   ;D

do it however you want that is personal to the two of you...our collective suggestions don't mean squat.

and congratulations (we're all assuming she'll say yes).

Congratulations.   [clap]

Good luck to you. Hopefully you've enjoyed your youth long enough to appreciate the HUGE decision you're making. Here's to you my friend.  [wine]

Congrats.
I proposed at the top of Yosemite Falls in waterfall season (it was late April). Course, I didn't go through with the wedding, so you might wanna go another direction  ;D

Yeah, 'cause that wouldn't end badly at all.  ;)

Screw all this zappy stuff. Do it ala caveman. Beat her upside the head and drag her to your cave. Worked for me.

the key is to not hit her so hard that she doesnt recognize you afterwords.

otherwise congrats!

It probably doesn't matter much what you do as long as you are sincere.

CONGRATS!!

I coworker asked the same question the other day - but predictably we offered the worst ways to do it. Mine was to wait until she was in the toilet then ask, then say "One flush for yes, two for no"...

well, if you're in the middle of nowhere and she says no, you 2 could presumably "get attacked by a bear" and they wouldn't find the body... ;D

on another note, and this is a general question for those that have, or feel they should ask...what if you ask her parents for permission or their blessing and they say no? do you go through with it anyways? do you walk away from it all? do you just start crying and tellign them how they screwed up their daughter's life enough already and ask why they can't just let her be happy?

That's a pretty bold statement, Teddy.   :-\

Though I guess it no different than I chose not to have any children.

yeah, but I have a glorious history, full of bad decisions lol so I'm done.

ok, so maybe it's not glorious.  It's cool though. I'm not going to hide in the woods and type up a manifesto or nothin', I'm just fine with being single.

Congrats! and keep us posted on how you actually do it and her reaction.  Positive I'm sure.

Pretty simple really.  Involve the motorcycle in some significant way.  Take her on the most scenic ride you can find.  Stop at a place with an overlook and pop the question.  Keeping the bike involved attaches all sorts of gushy feelings to it.  Besides, she will probably hold on very nicely on the way home.

Then a few years later when you find that bike you really want, she may be more inclined to let you buy it.

Hey, it worked for me.

Just an update, I will be asking her on New Years Eve... is that too cheesy?  [bang]

Together:

kind of a bad picture of them together, looks better in person =/
oh well, let me know what you think.

damn, I didn't know you were such a romantic! that's a good one!

Congratulations, Setsukosan!! New Year's sounds great, best of luck to you both and keep us all posted. God knows we love the sappy stories  ;D

My single suggestion would be that, whatever spot you pick, do it in a place that you would want to revisit, even with future kids and such. I knew an old couple that went to the same restaurant every year on their anniversary for 50+ years after he had proposed there. Now THAT is romantic!

As a parent, it is your job to say yes. Afterwards, you can go to your offspring and tell them that you will NEVER allow her to marry that bum.

Good idea. Makes for a great start to the new year. Marry her on a holiday too, makes it easy to remember the anniversary! ;D

That didn't work out too well for me. The restaurant was bulldozed a few years back. It's a strip mall now. :'(

You could always go my route. I never actually "asked her to marry me."

She found out that I was trying to decide what ring I was going to get her (damn autofill on the firefox search box gave up my secret  [laugh]). She ended up looking at rings with me....I bought one and she put it on.

It's now a running joke that we never actually got engaged.
