Title: Fender Mounts + Red Loctite = Fail
Post by: corey on October 20, 2009, 02:41:36 PM
You know how sometimes you grab the wrong loctite from the toolbox, and get ALLLLL the way over to the bike... and don't want to walk ALLLLL the way back over again... so you use the red ("permanent") loctite on your front fender mounts, when you meant to use the BLUE ("semi-permanent") but were lazy about it... even though your front fender mounts probably dont need loctite ANYWAY....

Well, yea. Those metal thread inserts, they spin if you can't get the bolt loose from the threads. SO my fender mounts are make the beast with two backsed.
Anyone know a good source for the black plastic front fender mounts?
Better yet, any tricks to getting the loctite to break loose? The mounts are fine if i can get the bolts to come loose, the threaded inserts are hex inside a piece of hexed plastic, meaning they will still work as long as i dont loctite them again....
Dammit...

heat gun?

my first thought too... but then i can't figure out a way to heat the bolts without melting the clearcoat/paint/plastic of the fender itself...

Drill a hole into the bolt and stick a soldering iron tip into it?

soldering iron.. good thought!
i might not have to drill into the bolt, as the ends of the threads are exposed on the other side.
i'll give this a try.
i might also try taking a lighter to the exposed end of the bolts too... lol.

i'm not a huge fan of plastic, so i might try making some of my own out of steel strips, or aluminum strips if i can find some.

Dealer or possibly eBay. If you spun them loose there's no real way back. A firm hold with some pliers might let you free the fender w/o cutting the mounts. But basicslly the mounts are done for.

Red Loctite 271 needs to be heated up to about 480°F to break down, according to loctite datasheet.

fail blog.
i'm going to go grab the ONE that i was able to get off and use it as a template for making my own.
lesson learned, hopefully everyone else can avoid this mishap...

as a side note, after some research, it appears i used red loctite for a reason... because that's what was on there when i took them off last time... thanks bologna!

In my experience once the hexes spin, the bracket is fuxxored.

Dunno why they come with red loctite on 'em, they don't seem to come loose without it.  ???

Don't bother f@cking around with them, the brackets aren't that expensive  and are available as an OEM part. My bike ate a couple a few months ago (don't ask) and I just bought them through my local dealer.

found some white ones... i know the hole doesn't have the vertical offset, but it's about 1/4" difference. the fender has plenty of clearance... for $10, they're worth a shot :)

otherwise, i'll fork up the $10 each for them from the dealer...

On my other thread, where i stripped my rotor bolts... i used blue locktite previously..... i reinstalled  the  4 that i managed to get out with red locktite....

We should start a failblog of all the stupid shit we do to our bikes as home mechanics.

Hey! I did the same thing!!! Glad I'm not the only one though.  I don't plan on doing anything about this until the winter, when I do more snowmobiling than motoring.

The Workshop manual calls for locktite, but I can't remember which one.  I'm blaming Ducati for this, i don't care what anyone says...stupid reading the manual  [roll]

i agree. ducati's fault. lol.
im going to hope these white ones work for now, i just wanted to put my new fender on...
in all reality, i can just leave the standard fender on for a bit, no big deal.

i'm going to pursue making some of my own out of aluminum.
i'm no metal worker, but my brother does have a mill (no computer.... just manual) and i know how to draw on aluminum with a marker.... so i think i can come up with something cool. i will keep you guys posted!

Yea i saw those up last night. With $15 shipping (which is absurd) it hit's $40, i'd rather just buy them new from my dealer at $9.99 each and go pick em up...

eBay shipping = scam.
