Title: Replacing coffins with newer-style masters?
Post by: xan07 on October 22, 2009, 03:06:51 PM
It seems like it'd be an easy swap, but I don't have any circular masters on hand to compare the two. Is it possible? I'd like to swap them out so I have more options for levers and clip-ons.

newer style?  ???

you mean like the brembo goldlines? or radial masters?

either way, it's a very common mod. you'll find alot of info if you use the search  [thumbsup]

Um, radial masters. I'm still kind of new to motorcycles so I wasn't exactly sure what to call it. I did find some good information searching though, thanks.

DO IT.

Same masters as kopfjager are shown here:

Cast version on this side:

For reference, that's the billet 16x18 "GP" Radial Clutch Master in kopfjager's pic and my first pic, the cast 19x18 "GP" radial master cylinder in the second pic of mine.

There's also ISR to look at, the new Brembo RCS system with adjustable ratio, and Beringer (which look real, real good).

The goldline masters are "axial" rather than radial - the piston travels along the same axis as the bar, the radial has it directly going perpendicular to the bar.

I just did this when I swapped to clipons.  If you have nice levers (CRG or etc.) that you want to reuse you will have to find a set of a mid 90's 900SS, 916 or early 748 as they have the large pivot levers.  I gave up and wanted to ride so I went with a set of smaller pivot master cylinders and just bought a new set of CRG levers.  I am glad I went that way as I would have wanted to change to shortly levers anyway.  I will post my long CRG levers for sale in a couple days.

You will notice a difference by swapping the masters.  Even though my coffins and the remote reservior goldlines have the same size piston size there is a vast difference in lever feel.  My brakes and clutch are now much more firm.  Hence me wanting to swap to shorty levers.  1-2 fingers is all I need pull wise.  Everyone has their own preferences so you will want to try both and make your decision if you go with aftermarket levers.
