Title: Anti-Theft Devices/Procedures?
Post by: positivecarry on October 25, 2009, 04:44:44 PM
Hi all, continuing with my line of beginner questions...what are the consensus recommended ways to avoid bike theft?  I live in NYC, so this is a particularly pertinent issue for me.

Might help if we knew where (not trying to take your bike...yet  [laugh]) but, avaliable places to park.
I lived at 43rd & 10th & was able to park my bike right next to the front door of the high rise I lived in with someone at the desk all night.  But will recommend making sure your insurance is paid up, a big chain & a big gun.  :)

Im sure someone here has a LoJackish (or other hack into the wiring) story, but not me.

Good luck  [thumbsup]

I indoor park it at home (Riverdale), park in a garage at work (UN), and park outside the dojo I train at or very close to where I am going to be and don't stay too long.  Use a Kryptonite NY disc brake lock when I'm in Manhattan and have a ton of insurance.

If they want it bad enough, they'll take it.

Opening a Dojo at your house might also help the chance of not having a theft at your place.  :)

If they want it bad enough, they'll take it.

Fact...Period.

you have to scope out your proposed parking spots to decide

having an immovable object (i.e. fence, post, etc) that you can chain it to and not get towed or complained on is great.

cover is a must.  the thicker ones are better.  some ahve a cable lock draw string at the bottom which helps immensely.

1.  big make the beast with two backsing chain/lock
2.  cover
3.  motion alarm
4.  rotor lock (some have #3 built in, i.e. the Xena)

the whole point is to make it hard to steal the bike.

when i parked on the street before i wised up, i would chain the bike to a grating next to my building. my super said as long as it was on the side, he didn't care and wouldn't complain.  i kept a cover on it and never had any problems.

later, i figured out i could drop a kryptonite anchor into the sidewalk and chain it there.  it worked for a long time until the side walk got repaved rofl.  i lost the chain and anchor.

i would leave the chain wrapped aroudn a light post locked.  never had a problem.  plenty of bike delivery guys do that.  just put it above the "urine line" which is about waist high (dogs and people)

no guarantee and you may get ticketed.  agan, you have to scope out your options.
