Title: Barber Motorsports Park Track Day Gopro footage of 1098s wreck
Post by: vw151 on October 27, 2009, 04:23:31 AM
Just got back from Barber this weekend.  Awesome weekend.  We got to run some new gopro camera's for the first time.  Unfortunately our buddy with a 1098s lowsided in turn 12.  Fortunately we got some really cool footage of the wreck.  Check it out!

I was out on the Monster this weekend around Leeds (Bass Pro Shops, specifically)... I didn't know anything was going on at BMP this weekend... Did you enjoy it?

How's your friend?

What happened?  That is really good quality video - I imagine even better before Youtube compression.

Barber is Awesome, we drove all the way from Columbus OH to get there.

Mike (the 1098s rider) is fine

The camera was a gopro wideangle and it was our first time using it.  Very cool little toy.

We have a ton more footage but I have only got to editing the crash footage so far.  It was so cool I just figured I'd get it up there so people could see it.  Amazing to watch him dismount in slow motion IMHO.

The bike should actually repair alright.  Most of the damage was cosmetic and he was running race plastic and such.  New clip ons, foot peg and body work, brake lever and maybe master cylinder and he should be good to go.  Not that that's cheap but he didn't get into the frame or anything.   I'll get some more pics up when I get things sorted out.

Yuck.  I've done that before.  Lost the front tire.  Nice neat lowside.  Do you know what tires he was running?  OEM rubber or something for the track?

Pretty sure he lost the rear.  Look at the way the rear of the bike comes away from him in the slo-motion.   He was running the pilot race tires.  They are DOT but are a track compound not a street compound.

+1 on looking like it was the rear that went. Thanks for uploading the video!

These aren't nearly as exciting as Mike's video but are pretty cool. the gopro camera is really neat. I'm thinking I might need to get the new HD gopro.

a little bit of an off angle for this comment, but it looks like steven is getting his body positioning very crossed up...

My GoPro does the same. I know thats not an answer, but it does.
I'ts the brightest part of the pic?
Camera's the size of a box of Tic Tacs, it can't be too smart bright.  [laugh]

You know I thought so too, but when you look at pictures that were taken with a normal lense you can see that it's not the case.  I think it's just the distortion of the very wide angle lens.  It looks that way on this camera angle on MotoGP too and I know those guys are doing it right.

That's kind of what I was wondering - if for the sake of quality throughout the rest of the picture, the intense white spot has to be blacked out. Just a little distracting. I at first thought it was a large bug or bird that was dive bombing the riders, and thought "how come nothing cool like that ever happened when I was at Barber"

it's a color saturation / white balance thing. the full white value that the camera is recognizing is further out in the sun, so it doesn't know what to do with the even brighter part... so it ends up black. it's wierd, i see it alot in RAW photo files...

you'd think they would just write it in the programming to make it maximum white.  Oh well

Still organzing stuff but here is one of Steven and I

We are likely going down in March again.  Steven's mom lives in Birmingham and we have done this trip 2 times now.  It works out pretty good because we don't have to stay at a hotel and he gets a visit in with the Mom.  I'll have a beer with all you guys next time.  I like beer and I like motorcycles.

I would love to take my monster to Barber.  I've only ridden it at Mid-OH, but last time I was there I crashed.  Now everyone makes fun of me for crashing my street bike when I have a track only bike.  I don't care, that monster is so much fun on the track, I'm sure I'll end up on the track with it again.  Just seems the Gixxer always makes it to Barber.  I'm getting more comfortable on the Gixxer so it'll probably be on the track 90% of the time.

Here are a couple shameless pics of my monster on the track

Well, I'll just have to get you back the following night.  As crazy as this sounds I might just have to get my M1100 out on the track and wring its neck.  It is so beautiful and new but I know it should be run hard!!!!!

I whole heartedly support this.  The monster is sooooo much fun on the track.  Beware though, if you that's what you get  used to on the track then riding a superbike will take some adjustment.  I still can't go as fast on the track on my GSX-R750 as I can on my monster but I'm working on it.

Nice vids.

How hard is it to mount the GoPro in the front without it getting in the way?

I am vw151 pretty much everywhere.   I don't get on vwvortex a ton anymore.  Used to spend a lot of time in the MkV forum.  I have a 2006 GTI, that has sort of taken over trailer duty in the last year.  Poor VW.  Motorcycles are just more fun.  :)

I'm not sure what you mean.  Specifically where in the front are you refering too?

Either way, it seems that with the proper mount you can get away with putting it about anywhere that your body isn't and anywhere that won't drag on the ground when leaned over.  They have 2 different sized  clamp mounts for bars and round connections, a giant suction cup mount, a wrist band mount, a chest mount, a special helmet mount and then also several types of 3M adhesive mounts.  The camera is so small you can put it a lot of different places.  It's a pretty trick little piece.  I finally picked up an older 3MP non wide angle so me and my buddies can switch views.  I'd really like to get the HD gopro but maybe one day when I pay off some debt.

That's what I wanted to know. From pictures it looked bulky enough to get in the way if you mount it on your tank for instance, especially on a track as your head is going to be in the same area. I've actually seen shots where the view is obstructed by the underside of a helmet.

I wonder about the drag it creates when it's mounted to your helmet though.

On the tank it would be marginally in the way and the wide angle lens is so wide it's bound to pick up anything near it.  It has a 170 degree viewing angle.  For that mount the non wide angle might be better.

Although the tank is a good spot to mount it, this camera kind of begs to be mounted in more interesting places because of the mounts it comes with.  We were talking about clamping it to a fork slider and checking that our next, pointed forward or back.

Mounting on the tank you can do with almost any camera because of the gas cap mounts available, and they'll all be in the way when you tuck.

On the helmet mount, The drag is marginal or at least unnoticeable to me when it's  up there.  Helmet is a decent place to mount but I hate the way it picks up where the rider is looking, like the quick shoulder checks and stuff.  That's just my opinion though.
