Title: The Official Diecast Collectors Thread
Post by: Monster Dave on October 28, 2009, 07:05:37 AM
So I started a thread about the new Mad Max movie which inadvertently turned into a conversation about diecast cars and collecting. It only seemed right to start an official thread. So post up what you've got if you're a collector - 1:18 or 1:24th scale - it doesn't matter!

I've always loved TV/Movie cars, so in the other thread I started it out with my newest edition:

Mad Max Interceptor

Making number 27 in my collection of famous cars (1:18 scale).

No one else collects diecast cars? Really??

Well, my Mad Max Interceptor made by Autoart arrived last night and I've got to say "WOW" doesn't even do it justice!

Packaging:
It came in a really nicely designed box with art and summary information from the film on it along with a really nice picture of the car unlike most boxes which have a clear "window" on them, this was a sealed box and classy at that.

When I opened it, I found a Styrofoam container molded to fit the car and keep it safely sealed inside the box and it was also screwed to the bottom just to be extra sure to keep it from shifting during shipping.

Detail:
The detail of this replica is amazing. Autoart pulled out all the stops with this one! From the the glossy over matte/satin black paint scheme, to the smalled details like the hidden knife on the chassis and the soft belt on the engine - fantastic! The tires are soft and have BFGoodrich so clearly legible and textured on all 5 tires - yes that's right 5 tires!!

Accessories:
Few diecast replicas come with accessories, but this one came with a slew of them! The biggest of them is "Dog" Max's only friend. For both he an Max, there's a box and 2 cans of DinkiDi dog/human food, along with 2 machete knifes that fit into sheaths - one in the drivers side door, one on the underside of the chassis near the rear of the car. As support resources, there are also 2 gas cans and a spare tire on a chain. Fantastic!!

Overall this car is an +A. It's got so much detail that I was really beside myself. Now I've got protected and on display in an airtight container to keep dust from ever touching this beauty!

Here are a few more pics of the amazing attention to details:

Monster Dave needs to post more pics.....

I need that Mad Max diecast....smartassed comments aside, a lot of these things become very valuable. Quite a few of mine already are.

As stated elsewhere, I'm pushing 100 1:18 scale cars, which I've collected since the early 1990s. My fleet consists primarily of Fords and Ferraris, with one or two oddities thrown in. A friend of mine is heavily into woodworking, and built my display cases cheap:

The Ferraris:

The Mustangs:

I'll try to get some pics of my cars here soon. I haven't take a "family picture" in a while!

Nice - I like the first pick with all the Ferrari's - it's like a Ferrari museum.  [thumbsup]

I know there's a lot of people who collect things like this, and you're right, they do jump in value over night depending on how rare they are. Most of the ones that I own aren't being made any longer which makes them hard to find and increases value. The part thats hardest for me is keeping sealed display cases in stock for them - I refuse to put them out if they'll get dusty - 1:18th scale cases like that are getting harder and harder to find.

I was looking for a 308 for a girl in the office for her desk (she has magnum PI crush).   but at over $100 bucks I don't think so.

does anyone actually sell off collections that have increased in value though?  (other than kids who inherit them?)

As an avid TV/Movie car collector, I've wanted a Magnum 308 GTS for a while, but only one company made one that was similar and it was over $100, but not the exact correct car. Hotwheels is coming out with one specifically for Magnum some time before the end of the year as part of thier elite collection, so it will probably be around $100 but at least it will be accurate - we'll see.

As to your question, I'm not sure as I haven't wanted to part with any of mine. However, other collectors (like myself) are always on the lookout for rare cars. One that's on my list is the Yellow Cuda from Nash Bridges:

These were extremely limited. Less than 500 I think.

Anyone seen a diecast of the 68' Charger from Blade.  That car was what made me fall in love with cars when I was 14.

If you ever come accross one let me know.

For a cool $375 you can have this one:

In all honesty though, you could easily mod a stock one from Ertl or even the one from Fast and Furious. The latter would be my choice. All you'd need was to find a replacement hood and remove the blower. Piece of cake!

Ferraris (mostly road models + one F1, Mercedes gullwing/sl amg/slr, porsches, lambos, cobras/vipers, a saleen, speedracer and more?
mostly made by Burago, not like the expensive autoarts, etc

it's been a while and i really need to build a case for them so I can look at them again.

I know where a full sized 308GTS resides.  ;D Unfortunately, it has some serious fueling issues and hasn't been on the road in 4 years now...if you think the models are spendy, trying buying PARTS for the full sized ones. Lol.

I have a collection of Italian and German super cars. Some courtesy of my good buddy Joel.  [beer]
I will work on getting pics up...

Ciao!

I have a collection of "special" cars from the Danburry Mint that my grandfather started collecting for me when I was little. They are 1:24th scale, but absolutely amazing. They are each hand built and are from the 1930-1950s. My favorite being a 1935 Duesenberg SSJ Speedster:

My second favorite from that collection is an amazing 1958 Ferrari 250 Testarossa:

The V-12 under the hood is sheer beauty.

Those cars however live their lives inside of their special protective boxes so that no dust what-so-ever gets on them. I wish I could display them, but since my grandfather has since passed away, I don't want anything to happen to them.

Monster Dave,
Those are nice.

All,
So how do you have your models displayed?  In their original boxes? or in cases like Speeddog?  Please share pics.
I am contemplating building shelves in my home office (for the cars and signed sports memorbilia), but worry about dusting.

For those that are on display I've always used airtight containers for each one that are stackable. I'll get pics this weekend. It's not an elaborate display, but its clean and keeps them dust free. I've got them displayed nicely on top of a bookcase.

The cases that I have are hard to find anymore (which seems odd to me) but they are like this:

I just came across the most amazing display setup and was about to post it up, so it was perfect that you asked! This is a custom job, but I'd LOVE to have something like this:

Correct - the white one on the right is indeed a Ford GT90. To its right is a yellow DeTomaso Pantera. To its left past the Viper coupe is an orange Saleen S7. Two more oddities with FoMoCo ties. On top of the case in that same pic, next to the black GT500, is a Ford RS200. Behind those two is a Ford GT concept (late model).

Never seen an Indigo diecast. I have a black Mach III in my Mustang case.  [thumbsup]

So after only a week, I got a response back from an RC2 rep regarding an inquiry if they had any plans on releasing an A-Team van (RC2 holds the license) and his answer was sadly that there are no plans for any future hollywood cars at this time.  :-\

Glad I made my own - custom.  [thumbsup] I took pics of my collection over the weekend and will post them up soon.

In the mean time, I'll just have to wait for the Elite SEWest and Keaton editions of the Batmobile to be released:

Both come in a special finish and have extra detail.

Not sure on the scale... already packed the original box away and am too lazy to dig it out... it's over 12" long though.

Just picked up the cabinets at Ikea yesterday... $59 each.  Lighting to come later.  The cabinets are set up for lighting, but it was more expensive than the cabinets.

The only thing that bums me out about the cases, is that the two transporters (1 WSBK, 1 MotoGP) don't fit.

That 308 is nice!  From Mattel?

There are die-casts and there are die-casts...some of the higher end items are spectacular.  As a pro model builder in a previous life, I can appreciate some of the work that goes into these production level models.  I saw the die-cast industry grow and grow during the 90s.  The smaller scale ones pretty much put me out of that business!  I worked mostly in 1/43rd scale, but also 24th, 20th, and 12th.  The last regular work I did with models was customizing die-casts for customers...matching exterior and interior colors, mostly Miatas and PT Cruiser, but a few Porsches, BMWs, M-Bs, etc.  The side-job helped pay for my Formula Vee and Miata projects.

Wow - those are awesome. I've wanted to get the Steve McQueens' 917 for a while:

I had to choose between that one and the Mad Max interceptor from AutoArt (which is amazingly detailed).

The 308 is from Mattel but it's part of their Elite Collectors series - so the level of detail is much higher. I'm really looking forward to getting it tomorrow when it arrives!

You made a "crashed" Porsche?  Was that to commemorate an owner's crash?  As if s/he didn't have enough memories.  That's like pouring salt on a wound.

Hi Dave,
I'm looking for a 1/43 scale Ford Pinto to complete my collection of ford cars that I worked on as proto types whilst employed at the transmission plant over here in the UK.
Nate has been on the look out for one but so far hasn't found anything in the 1/43 scale so if you've got one or know of thats available please let me know.
I'll get my wife to take some pics and i'll send them to you to post if thats ok.

The damaged 917 was from a Provence Moulage resin kit and molded with it.  It represents the 1970 Daytona 24 winner (Rodriguez,  Kinnunen)...it crashed into another car during the night and ran like that until they replaced the fender after sunrise.

Mmmm.....Pinto.

My favorite of all my diecasts is my Exoto 1:18 Ford GT40 MkIV '67 LeMans winner. The detail on that thing is amazing. Runner up is my Exoto Cobra Daytona coupe.

My 308 arrived today - limited edition - and amazing in every way. You can actually smell the new lether that covers the seats, feel the real carpet on the floor...I'm completly amazed at how detailed it is!  [thumbsup] [thumbsup]

Hi Dave,
thanks for finding the large scale pinto but I'm afraid it won't fit in the cabinet that I made to display them in.
I've collected the cars that I worked on at fords plus one or two group1 racing saloon cars and rally cars that had transmissions built by me.
Also in my cabinet are afew models of rally, touring and F1 car that my eldest son has worked on in his motor sport career.
It amazes me at the amount of detail that you get with the modern diecast models, blimey when I was a kid we never had windows never mind opening doors etc and the grafix are truely awesome.
Keep looking Dave as you never know what might turn up and I will be a very happy chap to finish my collection.

cheers....Geoff   [coffee]
