OK, now I've gone and done it.  Bought a M1100.  You can read about it here:

Part of the deal is that I get a replacement seat at discount.  Ducati offers 2; the gel low seat and the touring seat.  Height is not a problem since I'm 6 feet tall however, soon as I sat on the 1100 I saw what everyone else was talking about.  I need a perch that is more level with the ground.  Which seat gives the most level perch?

I did pre-register at Sargent seats for the one they will be coming out with but it won't be available till sometime in 2010.  I'm not sure I can wait that long.  Anybody that can tell me which Ducati seat is the most level with the ground front to back, give me your input.

the touring seat.  It's the same one from my 696.  It doesn't completely get rid of the "crusher" effect, but makes a big difference. 

Ditto z0mb1e_DUC.  I pulled my touring seat from my 696 and moved it over.

The angle on the 1100 wasn't as bad as it was on the 696 at stock but the touring seat helps.  I've had the touring seat on since 3 weeks after buying my 696 and never looked back (June of last year with the 696, moved to the 1100 the day I brought it home 2 months ago).

Using your core to hold you off the tank, while making you sore for a while, is also a good practice.

haven't ridden the lowered seat, but the touring seat is awesome. did 2000 km last summer. no issues other than the wife forgetting to lean back on braking sometimes  :o

No experience with the low seat but I agree with all the previous comments regarding the touring seat  [moto]

OK, thanks for the input.  I've been thinking the touring seat would be the way to go.  The low seat is made to give an easier reach to the ground so the front might be even lower than the standard making the seat tilt even more.  Now I just have to wait and see if I can stand the stock until the Sargent is available to decide between the touring and the Sargent.

the key thing about the stock is riding technic. you can't use the stock seat like a dirt bike. ie you can't get up on the tank and grab the tank with your thighs. you have to push your butt back and grab the tank with your knees.

That's what I do.  Actually, the stock seat is more comfortable under way than when I sat on it at the showroom.  It still hurts my lower back some though.  I have a bad back and right wrist from when some illegals from Mexico pulled out in front of me about 28 years ago.  I do hang off to some degree in the corners and the stock seat lends itself well to that.

This pretty much the same thing I do with the touring seat.  I'm 6-1, so it helps.

Please, one of you to take a pic of the seat on the bike showing the angle of the seat in relation to the ground.  Does that make sense?

I think you are asking for pictures of the angle of the seat into the tank, right?

Best I can do is the stock seat on a 696 vs the touring seat on the 1100 taken from the same angle.  You can see how the touring seat is much more level than the angle of the stock seat, especially the angle at which the stock seat hits the tank.

Did I mention I have done over 12000 miles with the touring seat and about 400 with the stock seat?

Hard to tell for sure but it looks like they added foam to the front of the touring seat and then it slopes back to about the same height as the stock seat at the rear section of the riders position?   

that's exactly what they did.  At the point that the front meets the pillon seat area, it's the same height.  From there, they basically gradually thicken the seat as compared to the stock seat.  By the time the seat hits the tank, it's like 1/2in or 3/4in thicker, which changes the angle, making it more level.  There's still something of a slope facing the tank, just less so.

Dennis wait for the Sargent, I'm glad that I purchased one for my S4RS as I find it more comfortable than both the standard and DP gel seat [thumbsup]

I have the low seat that I got to solve the problrm of inexorably sliding forwards- the grippier fabric really does the job-a bit less plush but once I get the Ohlins dialed in that should ease the choppiness over frost heaves and other high impacts hits from the rear suspension.The slightly lower seat also eases the load on the arms somewhat and makes it easier to keep the knees from overshooting the tank. I might add that gusseted Arborwear pants are the most comfortable pants to wear but nothing beats the Tech sport rider Vanson leather pants for comfort! Don
