Title: 2001 Monster ie intermittant stall and sometimes no restart.
Post by: cozzb on November 04, 2009, 10:12:02 AM
01 Monster - Stalls intermittantly at any speed and under power (hwy or in town), accompanied by backfires sometimes. try to restart, fuel pump runs. Acts like no spark but doesnt fail long enough for me to test if its spark loss.

Battery - charged and spins motor fast - and is kept on tender.

Plugs - changed recently (within 100 miles) previous plugs not sooty. Still does it.

Front head temp sensor - cleaned 3-4 months ago. Had corrosion. Cleaned thougroughly  and applied dielectric grease and ran fine since. Was running rich before this was cleaned.

Checked all connections on harness for corrosion - none found anywhere else.

Fuel - Drained (wasnt old) refilled with new 93 octane. No water or contaminiation found in old fuel.

Have fire when I check at plugs

I am wondering if the pickup or crank sensor is going bad? Can they get dirty and give this problem? Dealer told me coils give a lot of problems on these but I dont believe its that as why would both go bad intermittently. Its irritation to have it intermittent. Wish it would just fail altogether.

Thanks in advance..

Most likely the safety relay. It's the smallest of the 3 relays under the seat.
Theoretically it can be replaced with any of the following

Replacements that will work for the Safety Relay on older monsters are:

Radio shack 900-2391
Seimans V203073
Bosch 0 332 207 307
Napa AR 634
Car Quest RY 620
Borg Warner R3223
Orman 68H-UA-0070003
Mopar 56006846

I can verify that Napa AR 634 and borg warner R3223 work flawlessly.

It's the small black relay next to the yellow one under the seat. If its original it's most likely Siemens V23073

If you want to test if it is the relay, pull the relay and run a jumper wire from the red/black wire to the red/black wire.  if the bike no longer stalls either the relay or the sidestand switch is the problem.  to check if the sidestand switch is the problem, jump the wires at the connection to the sidestand switch.  Keep in mind, the bike will now start and run in gear with the sidestand down.

Dis be da relay

Thanks guys for the replies. I will try it and test.

Also, Sometimes it seems like when it stalls I can turn key on and off and it starts running again (while riding when it stalls) But sometimes it does not work. I think that may be coincidental (key switch).

On these 2001 injected bikes is the fuel injection system capable of throwing codes? I have not ever seen an FI light or other come on. I think I will start with by passing the sidestand switch, test for a while and then try the relay.

I wish it would happen where I could test it instead of out on the road. Makes me lose confidence in my dark girl.

Maybe time for that Tri-Colore monster I saw for sale.

Update-

Thanks to all who replied. Turned out to be one of the two Siemens relays. Mins has two rubber banded together to left of battery. I swapped them and they were fine, but then the next time the cluster went dim. So the relay that was in the old position was intermittant faulting. I thumped it and all was well.

I swapped it back and sure enough - no fuel pump power. I thumped it and power. Replaced it with one that the dealer actually had in stock - $6.83. Back on the road! Thanks Everyone!!!
