Title: S4R, DEALER SAYS "CHANGE BELTS"? BIKE ONLY HAS 660 MILES?
Post by: DucatiMonster on November 04, 2009, 11:55:30 AM
Im in negotiations to purchase a 2006 S4R, with 660 miles.  The dealer is recommending that I change the belts and do a full service.  Do we really need to change the belts?  The dealer wants $700 to change the belts and oil service.
Please let me know if this is necessary.
Thanks in advance

I'd try to negotiate down the price... but yes you should.

Your dealer isn't just trying to up sell you on the belts - he's got a valid point. The timing belts on Ducs are spec'd for replacement at 12k miles or 2 years of age regardless of mileage. Those belts are rapidly heading toward 4 years old - and old belts that have been sitting still forever are worse than old ones that see regular use. The sitting one's tend to develop stiff spots and are more prone to break

Ask them what else they're doing, IMO they're including a valve clearance adjustment in that.

I wouldn't recommend to a customer to do a valve clearance adjustment at 660 miles.
It wouldn't be a *bad* thing to do, as sometimes they're not as good as they could be directly from the factory.
But the clearance adjustment isn't something that changes just due to time.

+1

That's too much for just belts and an oil change.

I bought 2005 S4R with 500 miles on it in July ,from a close friend, paid a little less than you posted in another thread.(so, I take it you pretty much decided to buy a bike?)
The situation is similar. The bike has very little mileage but sitting (indoor) for four years.
I changed all the fluid (engine oil & filter, brake & clutch fluid, change coolant and flushing radiator, you can do all of them by yourself), changed tires (I "could have" used PilotPowers that came with the bike, but I bought this bike specifically for back road scratching), then,
had local duc dealer to change belts. The cost for belt change was
Belt (pn 73710101A $88.99) x2 $177.98
Labor (1.25 hours)                  $122.50
Total                                    $300.48

So, I'd suggest asking what's involved besides belt and oil change.
(but, yes, you should change belts. IF the belts snaps, it's going to cost way more...)

Quick question on the radiator flush, since I've got an older S4 I was hoping to do that this weekend and wondered if there was anything special about flushing as I had simply intended to change the fluid.
Along those lines, what is the water glycol mix recommended?

Just get the belts and fluid(s) changed.

Doing the valves at 600 miles is wasting your time, unless you are installing some MBP collets (and your still wasting your time.  Things can and will move around in there as the engine breaks in, which is why most people see the largest valve adjustment at 6K, perhaps a few at 12K, and then rarely after that (for a streetbike).

Doing them at 600 miles isn't going to do you any good....nothing has been broken in yet.

Belts...absolutely time.  We can show you how to change the belts and oil here, would cost you $200 tops (belts are 160 something?) and you can save the 500 for tires, trackdays, or lunch (if you are a big eater).
