Has anyone upgraded your spring rate from stock on an Ohlins rear shock? I have the stock .95 spring and they are wanting me to go up 2 spring sizes to the .105 I am a little worried about this making it ride to stiff. Any first hand knowledge would be appreciated.
Tagging along for this, I want to re-spring the bike for me as well while it's down for maintenance.
Fully cold weather geared and loaded up, I'm prolly 250ish on the bike. The adjustable preload does help, but with the stock spring it's really harsh if I turn it up enough to set the sag properly.
@ yoreese, how much do you weigh?
Taf, I'd say a -44/120 spring.
It's how I'd spring a ST-framed Monster for you.
St is heavier, but you want it to ride softer than a Monster.
No FHE on springing ST's, though....
Desmo Demon and his wife have ST2's, perhaps they might have some info.
There's an ST list/forum on Yahoo, perhaps some info there as well.
I am 230# with hopes of dropping 10#. ;D

I'd say a -41/115.
Again, no FHE on springing ST's.
For both of you guys, it'll depend on how much cargo you want to run with, as well.
I usually don't carry much and hardly ever ride 2-up as I got momma her own bike. [moto] Ohlins recommended 01092-36/105 this spring is 2 steps stiffer than stock and thought it might feel like a log wagon.
I've just posted a lengthy report on how my S4Rs feels after going up nearly 20pc on rear spring rate and softening the compression valving a bit.

Perhaps some help there.
In short: I was surprised the much stiffer spring didn't diminish ride comfort much; and with the combo of stiffer spring and softer damping, both ride comfort and twisties control has greatly improved.
Bear in mind tho the surfaces over here aren't the smoothest.
Because your spring is too soft, you have too much sag and you are using up that much suspension travel. With the correct spring (stiffer) you will regain this suspension travel and it should ride better.

I usually send anyone with suspension questions over to Rick at Cogent Dynamics ( http://www.motocd.com (http://www.motocd.com) ).
I'm a cheap-skate with my ST2 bikes and am still running the stock suspension components. I REALLY need to rebuild or replace the suspension on my ST2 since it has 50k miles on it, but I have a difficult time wanting to spend $1500-$2000 on a bike that probably isn't worth $2000. LOL (It's been crashed a few times and ridden quite hard). I'll have to do something soon with at least the rear shock because I know it's about gone. The rear end has been getting slippery and hopping over bumps in mid-curve when it used to never do that before.
I'm a little ahead of the game as the ST4S has Showa/Ohlins suspension from the factory. Just gotta do a little dial in or lose 40# [laugh]
