Title: Race-Driven Chains
Post by: LowThudd on November 06, 2009, 10:14:29 PM
I need a new chain on my Yammy, but I don't have a lot of money.

I found this:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-1990-YAMAHA-YX600-YX-600-RADIAN-O-RING-CHAIN_W0QQitemZ350075272518QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&itemid=350075272518 (http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/1986-1990-YAMAHA-YX600-YX-600-RADIAN-O-RING-CHAIN_W0QQitemZ350075272518QQcmdZViewItem?rvr_id=&itemid=350075272518)

It is either this chain or a non-oring heavy duty chain. I haven't been able to find much, good or bad on Race-Driven chains. Anybody use one?

Also, I belive my bike(86 Radian), came stock with a non-oring. Is it really necessary to upgrade to oring?

a non o-ring chain will be much more of a headache than a decent o-ring unit.  It will need much more attention in terms of cleanliness, lube and adjustment...If you are riding daily I really would not recommend something that increases your service intervals even more, it can become a real headache.  That and it most likely won't have the same lifespan as a sealed chain.

Thanks for the advice. I ordered the O-ring chain on e-bay for $50. Quite a deal if it's a good chain. The seller speciallizes in chains and brakes and has pristeen feedback on many chains. I should be good. Any advice on pressing/riviting an O-ring chain myself? I am thinking of getting the Pit Posse tool. $50 here: http://pitposse.com/pochcurito.html. (http://pitposse.com/pochcurito.html.) Or would it be worth it to pay someone to do it?
