Title: New rider, old monster, one problem!
Post by: AWF18 on November 07, 2009, 12:37:03 PM
Hi everyone, I just recently got myself a 01 monster 600. It was a great ride while it worked but now the bike won't start!! The headlights and neutral light come on and the bike makes noise when I try to start it but it just won't start. I think it may be the battery but other suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Other info on the bike:
18000 + miles
new spark plugs/wires
no other mods

Did you check to see if there is spark to the plug? Then check to see if there is fuel in the carb. First, I would throw the battery on a charger overnight.

I just got it to start a few hours ago (after multiple tries) and rode it, but it died on me not even maybe 5 minutes into the ride.

Does that bike has a kick stand switch? In older models, a bad switch will prevent the bike from starting.

If the bike makes noise when you attempt to crank it, id assume the starter is at least getting some voltage. Get yourself a good new battery, or have yours checked out. Double check the charging system while your at it.

You say that it died while running? Yes. If so, you problem probably lie's with your regulator. My 00' 750 did the same thing. Not a cheap fix, but that era was somewhat pron to this issue. You either got one that lasted forever or one that burned out. You may still find one on e-bay.

How is the cranking speed?  If the bike cranks well you can rule out battery and charging system.  Are you getting spark?  How old is the fuel in the bike?  Did you check that the fuel and vent lines are not kinked?

I got the battery on charge tonight. I can rule it out tomorrow. I will keep yall updated, and many thanks for the suggestions.

My baby is alive!!! I don't know what it was exactly, but I put in the charged battery, re-did the ignition wires and checked the spark plugs, and check the fuel line and filter. Thanks again for the responses.

congrats ... sounds like the symptoms of a weak battery; when you store her; put her on a jr battery tender once a month over storage time; monitor the battery voltage with a voltage meter ... and top up the tank with some non ethonol gas if you can find it ...

Just remember, if your regulator goes, with a fully charged battery you will not notice anything. I would check your charging system befor you go on any long rides.

Also check your fuses, Had the same prob when i got my 02 M750, thought it was the charging system. I checked the little fuses but didn't realize there is one big main fuse which actually is connected to the charging system. If that is burnt out, there's your problem.
