Title: new tank, new forks, and clip-ons
Post by: angler on November 08, 2009, 12:58:19 PM
Ducpond replace my tank, installed my SBK forks, moved the oil line, installed cycle cat clips and rizoma grips (finally no reflectors).  Here are some pics:

I dropped the gauges below the triple with one of Taftonomos lowered bracket this afternoon, but as I was buttoning it up, I cross-threaded one of the holes in the lower triple! Argggggh.  So no pics of the lowered and blacked out headlight just yet.

Simple fix.  Just drill it out and re-tap with a M6 bolt  [thumbsup]

Looks good !

Nice forks. Passenger pegs need to go. Too much black, needs some contrast.

I dig the belt covers, nice touch.  No blinkers?  I agree the pillion pegs need to go but I'm guessing you carry a passenger.  Cool bike [thumbsup]

There are black Rizoma signals up there but they got lost in the picture (they are black so I guess they disappeared into the blackness).

I do carry a passenger on occasion, but they are easy to pull and install, so that's no excuse.

Agree with you on the pass pegs.  I wondered about too much blackness, but I like it.  The cycle cat clip ons were gold before I had them powdered black.  When I put all the uninstalled parts on the floor together, I just couldn't leave them gold.

Passenger pegs need to go.
If you actually use these things just have them powdercoated to match the frame so they dont stand out so much..
My 2cents [thumbsup]

When I get some more coin, I might do the opposite of you - red annodized triple with the black forks.  Would match the red annodized top of the forks.

I've also thought about picking another retro/rat color and have Ducpainter paint the tank and cowl.

Real Quick,  Your X-threaded bolt on the triple.  No need to drill out to M6 (at least not initially) , Take an M5 tap and run it in from the top, and you should be fine.

What's the best way to accomplish this? I've seen some Yammie OEM caps which I think are the same, is it easy to transfer the lock?

Very nice ride angler! I concur with the suggestion to black out the passenger pegs... or untape the forks to complement them and the pipes.  ;D
The gold gas cap does come back in the fork sliders though... but since you're getting rid of the gold...

I agree about the gas cap.  I plan to get a black annodized (maybe red???) quick release one.  I have secure parking at the house and I'm not worried about gas theft in town.  If they feel like taking something in DC, its the whole bike.

The passenger pegs are off.  My GF likes to ride occasionally, but they are easy to take on and off. I will like take them to my powder guy or just rattle can them eventually.

 Very cool.

It looks like you used the factory top triple. Is that correct? If so, did you have it machined to accept the 53mm fork tubes of the SBK?

I did use a factory triple, although one off a different bike than the S2R800.  My old triple is the type with the integrated rise built in whereas this triple used the separate risers for the bars.  I did have it machined by Hooligan Machinist here on the board.  I tried to get someone to machine it locally and either got no interest or incredibly high cost.

I plan on mounting a plate on the top to accept a steering damper in the future.

I love the forks and clips.  I haven't had a chance to really flog it, but it seems much more planted.  It also turns in quicker and more intuitively.  I still want to play with the adjustment on the clips.  I think I am going to lower them a bit and bring the sweep up.  The good thing about cycle cat clips is pretty much infinite adjustability.

if you have a garage and then dont have to worry about gas cap being open and messed around by others,
simply just replace the filler cap with some aftermarkets one,
I have the Oberon cap black base and red center. it looks really nice.

I love the forks and clips.

A bump to reiterate - best mod I've done yet.  The front seems SO much more planted.  Flogged it on Ross Drive as hard as the wet leaf covered pavement would let me yesterday and I can't get over how much I love this bike......

Were the Pantah belt covers a direct bolt on or did they have to be modified?

I flea-bayed them like a year ago. They were a mess, but were cheap and cleaned up well.  I had them p/c'ed semi gloss black.  I also order an 80's Ducati decal set and put one in the recess on the covers.

Were the Pantah belt covers a direct bolt on or did they have to be modified?

They didn't have to be modified, but the don't fit "exactly"  The horizontal idler pulley bump out on the covers is slightly smaller than the lands on the jugs (if that makes any sense).  That is you can see parts of the jugs that used to be covered by the plastic belt covers.  Not something you notice at all.  It does not interfere with the operation of the idler.  You also need to replace the two front most bolts on the horizontal side with much longer bolts.

That is so awesome - there is now penis and jugs in the same thread  [evil]

here's an easy one for you. Undue the starter cable. Reroute through frame so it comes out the other side of the motor and isn't across the belt cover. if you don't have enough free play, mcmaster carr yourself some extra length.

Good idea.  I moved the oil line and now that starter wire sticks out like a sore thumb.

did both of mine just recently. Now, that little oil pressure sensor wire annoys me. It annoys me further after seeing Kopfjager's remedy.

Beautiful!!! [thumbsup]
But, really like that exhaust... What make is it?
Anything like it available for a 98' m900?

Great work

Contact Mark Savory of Motocreations (marksavory@motocreations.com) and see what's up. He's the maker of the ol' boomtubes.

Thanks for the quick reply ato Memphis!!!

Are pipes really loud?

there are two options regular loud and louder loud, Mark will be able to let you know whether it can be made to work with double sided swingarm bikes, and at what cost.

I've heard McKraut's. They sound fantastic.

I love my boomtubes.  I started with the loudest baffles and they were too much for me.  Ear plugs were a must for any riding.  Mark graciously sent me the quieter baffles and they work.  Loud, but about the same as termi's without the db killers.  I can now ride without ear plugs for short rides.  I have opened my airbox and the airbox honk is louder than the pipes most of the time.

I am running the stock ECU with an open airbox and it runs great and within spec.  I could probably get a bit more performance out of it with a remap, which I think I will do once I put pods on it.  If you have any other questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Mark at MotoCreations is a pleasure to do business with as well.

Is this possible to do with the stock starter wire or is a longer one required?  Where does it get routed?

thanks

I just turned the wire at the solenoid (loosen nut, turn wire to face other direction and retighten) and ran it around other side of motor, down around the horiz. cylinder, and across the starter. Well hidden by my belly pan, should be pretty out of the way on bikes w/out the bellypan. [thumbsup]

I've got upgraded powerlet wires, but not much different in length from stock. You can always grab yourself some high-temp 8ga for cheap if need be though.
