I have a S2R 800 with K&N filters replacing the stock airbox. I recently had a flat and was given a repair kit by a passing biker. I am planning on carying one from now on, but the bulk and weight make it unatractive to stowing in the tank bag. Realizing I have quite a lot of room under the tank without the airbox, I am thinking of using this space. Has anyone else?
First thought is to make some sort of bracket that attaches to the tab in the frame where I assume the airbox sat...the tab has a hole in it...and tie it into the frame. Another idea is to attach velcro to the underside of the tank where it is pocketed to clear the airbox, then using a small metal or heat-resistant plastic box (like a small Pelican or Otter case) to hold the tire kit.
Meh
I have had the same thoughts. I was thinking an aluminum pan, with dedicated places for the air cylinders and tools with through slots for tie wraps to hold things down.

D'oh! This reminds me that I could make a fiberglass box/container myself.

Tewwific pwoject! :P
What about replacing the crankcase vent box with one of the TPO crankcase breather filter? You could then cut open the old crankcase vent box, add some hinges and you'd have a decent size storage compartment. Seems there ought to be something that could be done with that giant, odd-shaped box.
if it's too big for a tank or tail pack, how is it going to fit under the tank and around the pod filters?
backpack?
The other day I heard something about a fake exhausts used for storing stuff.

Didnt say too big, just unattractive. There are other things I rather carry in the tank bag, and sometimes I ride without it.
