Title: 5000 RPM?!?
Post by: Razzo Bolognese on November 12, 2009, 11:29:32 AM
The other day I was winterizing my baby  :'( After I Tended the battery, I Stabil'd & topped off the gas, then the tires, then I stuffed all the open holes with steel wool to keep the rodents out of the tailpipes and airbox. After I was done, I decided to crank her over, just to make sure the Stabil got where it needed to go.  I forgot about all the steel wool, particularly the ones on the intake of the airbox. I quickly turned off the bike, not knowing if it would make a difference, pulled all the steel wool out and the bike cranked over with a bit of effort but it was IDLING at 5000RPM.  Four or five tries later I'm sure I musta done something stupid.  On the off chance I'd get lucky, I started jiggling cables to see if something got caught.  BTW no, I have no freakin' idea which one is the accelerator cable.  What the heck could I have done?!?  How the heck do I undo it?!?

You're going to have to start pulling stuff apart. You've probably got steel wool stuck in the throttle bodies. If you're lucky, you can have the air box off and pull it out. But it's quite possible some of the threads have worked into the moving bits that you'll have to work at picking out. This may well mean removing the throttle bodies and exploratory surgery

Doesn't your 2005 bike have the fast-idle lever on the leftside handlebar control?  Follow the cable around/down to the engine and make sure the cable's not fouled or hung up at either end.

Yeah, but it usually maxes out at about 3k...

+1 The wool is probably holding the throttle body half way open all the time.

OK, I know where the gas & air gets inserted, and I know where I'm supposed to sit.  The throttle bodies?  Izzat inside the holes inside my airbox?  What do I do if I can't see/feel anything in there?

throttle bodies are beneath the airbox. gotta take the air box off, check the butterflies to see if anything is in there and just to be safe i would pull them off and check going into the cylinder as well. wouldn't hurt to pull the exhaust header off as well and check from the back side to see if you got stuff in the cylinder, but not sure if you have to go that far at first.

true, but i would still pull it apart.

the older monsters you could take the airbox apart. the new one's not so much.

That is a REALLY GOOD POINT!  Last year I put steel wool in the intake holes but mice still made a home out of my airbox so this year I left the filter on and just stuffed the steel wool into the intake on the airbox.  That must mean there's no crap in my engine.  What else could I have done?  ???

dont you have the airbox with the top that comes off? pull it off, check it. then take off the air filter and make sure nothing punched through. you can look into the throttle bodies with the filter off.

Yes I do.  Since I'm not near the bike, I'll have to check it out on Sunday.  I shall report back.

How to be a dumbass:  Be me   [bang]

Last year I filled the tank, popped it open, and used the alligator clips that came with my Battery Tender to attach to my bike.
Last year I opened the airbox & filled the intakes with steel wool, imagining that mice might consider a K&N air filter to be as addictive as wire insulation (which happens to be mouse crack)

And now the dumbass part:
This year I decided to keep my airbox closed & just block the intake on the front of the box...AFTER I had already filled the intake holes & forgot about 'em  [bang]

Then I started my bike, sucking those giant chunks of steel wool into my intakes, leaving the butterfly valves (or whatever you friggin' gearheads call the "more gas" thingies inside the intakes)  [bang]

Then I overfilled my gastank.  You know, the one that was propped open for the Battery Tender clips?  Then I covered my bike with a cheap cotton cover & walked away for a week.  I come back and the whole cover is SOAKED in gas, snuggling right on up to my gastank.  Yep, I screwed up my paintjob. [bang]

Necessity might be the mother of invention, but in my case she's just a mutha.

P.S.  Thanks to Howie, as always, for trying to help this lost-cause
P.P.S.  With no steel wool, she runs like a DREAM

So I did read it right, that you had put wool in the actual intakes. Lucky you that it got mostly hung up on the butterflys and you were able to extract it.

Sorry about the paint... but there happens to be a painter on here.. I head he's *ok*  :)
