Title: Desmo Post by: Monster Dave on November 16, 2009, 12:18:07 PM So this past weekend I met a guy at a local event who owns a Desmosedici, and in fact he had ridden it to the event. While the bike is amazing to look at, I was a little dissapointed in the way that it sounded when he fired it up. I hadn't heard one in person before, but I was just suprised that it didn't sound more beefy than it did. Now I won't deny that it sounded like a race bike, and that's just what it is in the purest form, but still I just expected something more.
Anyone else get a chance to hear one in person? Title: Re: Desmo Post by: CDawg on November 16, 2009, 12:24:20 PM I have, but only the street pipes. I haven't hear one in-person with the race pipes.

You know what, I think that I forgot that it was a V4....that makes sense.... But you know, when you hear so much about something you get your hopes up for something specific, then are disappointed.... Title: Re: Desmo Post by: junior varsity on November 16, 2009, 12:45:16 PM Yeah its the V4. I have heard one on the street and one on the track (and one going the other way down the street).
They are sub 1000 cc's, each cylinder then is just 220ish cc's, compared to a 900 for example, which has a 452 cc displacement per cylinder. For crazy loud and scary sounding, it can do it. Like something is angry inside the motor. The RC8 sounds equally evil. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: superjohn on November 16, 2009, 02:53:35 PM I heard one in the confines of the garage/vendor area at the Indy MotoGP race last year and about shit myself. I thought it sounded f---ing great.
They were told not to start it up again (I think because every other vendor stall nearby emptied out to come see what was making all the noise. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: sally101 on November 16, 2009, 03:11:46 PM It's an 800cc 4cyl.. End of story.. It does sound great at Laguna Seca, but not much different from the other GP bikes..
It certainly isn't like WSBK where the 1198 sounds waaaaaay different from everything else on the track. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: junior varsity on November 16, 2009, 03:14:05 PM the desmosedici RR isn't not 800cc. It is a 989cc road replica of the GP bike, the year before it went to hell and they pulled the displacement back to 800.

Title: Re: Desmo Post by: ducpainter on November 16, 2009, 03:15:28 PM I've heard one at the track.
It doesn't sound much like the Ducs we're used to hearing, but it does sound great. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: Randimus Maximus on November 16, 2009, 04:14:52 PM I've seen one at idle. Another on a dyno. And a couple on the street. I'm going with [thumbsup] [thumbsup] on the sound in each case.
Title: Re: Desmo Post by: Raux on November 16, 2009, 08:53:54 PM the video, sounds angrier but less bass

I've heard it from 2' away, and on the track. It's a sound I will not forget for the rest of my life. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: Spidey on November 17, 2009, 04:33:16 AM Anyone else get a chance to hear one in person? I bet you heard one with street pipes. They sound good, but disappointing. With the race pipes fitted, they sound like hell's comin' rumblin' through town. That said, they don't have the same bass as a street Duc. More snarly like a race bike and loud as fook. [evil] Title: Re: Desmo Post by: muskrat on November 17, 2009, 04:44:11 AM I've heard them on the street and track and the track was running a pack of 4 of them. sounds like a bunch of fighter jets about to destroy something. I love that sound and if/when I can afford one I'll have one. [bow_down]

Title: Re: Desmo Post by: Monster Dave on November 17, 2009, 05:18:10 AM It may be that the one that I heard had the street pipes on it, but I think that it was more the absence of bass, that roar and rumble of the V-twin sound that I had stuck in my head was more of what I was expecting.
I think that if I had to describe it, I'd say that it sounded like there was a very angry Tasmanian Devil trapped in the engine. (http://smiley.onegreatguy.net/taz.gif) I also think that I probably would have sounded better racing by at 100+ mph rather than at idle and at low speed. There's no denying that it certainly sounds like a healthy race bike though. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: Triple J on November 17, 2009, 06:04:29 AM I think they sound great! [bow_down]
But you're right...not as deep as a typical Duc, especially the 2-valvers. More of an angry, high-strung sound. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: junior varsity on November 17, 2009, 11:43:59 AM 1999 Ducati Monster 900 - Sil Moto Spaghetti Headers Only (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DVffNReC554#normal)
Deep? With no pipes, I lost at least 20% of my hearing, but I just "had to know" what it would be like to hear it at idle with only the spaghetti headers. Answer: ridiculous. I wish I had used something more than a tiny handheld camera for this. Title: Re: Desmo Post by: muskrat on November 17, 2009, 07:17:21 PM alright Josh, get back to school man. you've had too much time on your hands lately and have basically bought 5 Monsters for what you have into that one. [evil]
