Title: Low Side - Need some thoughts and advice *PICS*
Post by: deepak8612 on November 18, 2009, 09:26:39 AM
OK. you know that dumass feeling you get when u do something so completely stupid  [bang] [bang] [bang]. That was me getting off the ground about a week and half ago when I low sided my bike (that you see below).

Without further ado.. here are some pics of what she looked like before and after my retardedness

now if you will notice.. there are some nice aftermarket parts on there. Cycle cat rearsets, the CRG mirrors, SSS (it used to be a 695.. i guess technically the motor still is), GSXR front fork.

here is the damage after. which isn't too bad considering what could have been
brake lever and right side mirror are not done.

rash on exbox, and on the clutch housing-- also see crack on picture that is 2 below. also notice that the rearset is now half what it was.. footpeg got ground down pretty good and snapped off. and the brake lever is a mangled mess.
I am quite worried about the clutch housing.. was leaking fluid.. don't know if i will have to replace or just fix the crack somehow.

Now for the questions (i already have a new mirror0..
1. the fork being a replaced GSXR fork.. anyone know if clip ons that fit a GSXR will fit on this bike?
2. should i try to repair the clutch cover?
3. where can i find some replacement cycle cat footpegs/ entire right side. been online searching hard to no avail. any thoughtson replacement rearsets that are easily available?
4. should i attempt this myself?

feel free to chime in on any other mods that you think might be worth trying.. since I'm gonna be working on some parts of the bike anyways [thumbsup]

Glad to see you're well enough to take pictures and type this up. Sorry to hear about your lowside.

I can't help much with your questions, but that's a sweet looking bike.

did you buy that bike off someone here? I remember him having a hard time with the builder...

all jokes aside.... you need to get a camera with an image stablizer!

1. the fork being a replaced GSXR fork.. anyone know if clip ons that fit a GSXR will fit on this bike?
If gsxr clip on fits on a gsxr fork, then a gsxr clip on fits on gsxr fork. end of story. in fact, any 50mm clip on will work.

2. should i try to repair the clutch cover?
not unless you are willing to take it off yourself and know someone who does nice welding jobs. Its easier to buy just buy a new one.

3. where can i find some replacement cycle cat footpegs/ entire right side.
thats because they dont exist. you might be able to find another brand. I dont know how CCs mount though.

4. should i attempt this myself?
sure why not.

How are you doing? sounds like you  walked away pretty easily.

1. Like He Man said, 50mm clip ons.
2. Nah, just get another one, they're pretty easy to change. New or second hand is up to you, you're just painting it black anyway so it won't matter.
3. You may be able to find parts floating around but I don't like your chances, replace them.
4. Yeah, I think so. Get the service manual or start camping out in the tech forum, or both. Now's the time to rely on others and show appreciation for any help you get.

Glad you're mostly ok, lowsides happen, welcome to the club.

I did and it was a risk that paid off well. the bike was solid.. no issues till i went and dropped it. Its either the camera or my shaky ass hands.. i will go with a combo of both. although, that is a bit scary considering that I am in the medical field.

true.. but havent people had issues with getting clip ons to fit on monsters.. something about spacing if i'm not mistaken right?

2. should i try to repair the clutch cover?

true. i guess that should be the way to go since i know someone who can get it at cost. but im gonn ahev to take it off anyway
3. where can i find some replacement cycle cat footpegs/ entire right side.

probably easiets to just get some new rearset.. damn.. these were so sweet though.

yeah.. i got right up and wheeled the bike off the road .. wear your gear kids. thanks for the thoughts man. I think even though i havent worked on bikes a lot i might have to recruit one of my racer buddies to give me a hand.

Lowsides do happen. Unfortunately, I have belonged to that club since the mid-90's. any thoughts on where to obtain the service manual?

In some instances a little extra spacer is needed with the coffin style masters - but generally this is the exception, not the rule. The majority of clip ons with a bolt on and go swap.

probably easiest to just get some new rearset.. damn.. these were so sweet though.
You'd have to look long and hard for replacement cycle cat items. You'll only find used stock, and it still will fetch a premium price. I'd suggest you look at what Rizoma has to offer.

500 Euro.. ouch

500 Euro.. ouch

maybe you can hire taftanomous to clone you a left side one? or modify a generic one to fit?

honestly, i would just take them off and sell them. I dont want to deal with parts that will get broken when you go down only to find that there are no parts. atleast if you sell them you can get premium price for it. Take a look at SATO rearsets. they look much better IMHO.

Unfortunately, I have belonged to that club since the mid-90's.

im a yearly member. 3.5 years of riding. been down 3 times. :p

Yeah, I'm a late arrival to that club. ;)

If you're lucky an electronic copy may be online somewhere for "review" purposes. Given that your bike is so custom, it may be of limited use. In the case of the clutch cover, it's going to be the same so you're good there. It's not that big of a job though, messy & a little time consuming but otherwise, no big deal.

About your CycleCat rearsets. I wouldn't be surprised if you could use the toe peg from other levers, like this...
http://www.motowheels.com/italian/myproducts.cfm?parentcategoryid=1204%7CMonster&productID=7321&showDetail=1&categoryID=45 (http://www.motowheels.com/italian/myproducts.cfm?parentcategoryid=1204%7CMonster&productID=7321&showDetail=1&categoryID=45)|Monster%20Billet&vendoridtodisplay=0&filterFor=&collection=168%7CEuropean%20Motorcycle%20Parts

The main bolt is broken so you will have to get that out and find a similar.

If you really want to keep the CycleCats, I have he drawings for the rotating part. Maybe someone can machine you a new one? The peg itself - did it survive? If not, well, more machining....

But, in the end you'll probably spend more than another new set costs. The ones for your bike aren't as expensive as for S*R bikes.

I agree.. i think im gonna just get the other side off and sell it and grab a completely new set. anyone have some sato rear sets they want to get rid of? ;) ;)

I think for the most part i can do a lot fo the stuff with out the service manual. minor stuff and since i am gonna replace the handle bar too, the bike is gonna be so custom a lot of that is just gonna be trail and error

sorry about the accident, and I am glad that you are OK -- bikes can always be rebuilt (and now, you have an excuse ofr nicer bits!)

not much more to add other than to give you a heads' up on www.oncycles.com (http://) who may have the Cyclecat rearsets left over when they closed the manufacturing arm of the company.

Re the cyclecat parts, PM Somedude here on the DMF - he had some of the arms made, which seem to take most of the impact (apart from the peg itself). Not sure if that will help, but worth a shot.

will give that a shot. although i think that not having to mess with this the next time i drop the bike, someone hits it or it falls over in a parking lot are good  enough reason to just go with a manufacturer who still makes the parts.

Give us the full report on the low side [popcorn]

hmm.. lets see. full sequence of events:
1. riding along  [moto]
2. see what appears to be walt whitman motorboating CJ from baywatch (in her official red suit)
3. speed up to check out the action.
4. turn comes out of nowhere.. obviously placed there by future jesus who didnt approve of my sinful behaviour.
5. take sharp turn only to run into the dangerous road slippies (similar to spikes except the make you slip) placed there by the kindergarden cop, who was drunk of Guinness and looking for entertainment  [leo] [drink]
6. slide out across median and into trafffic and meet a fiery end. THE END!!!

Pretty sure I saw hat bike for sale around these parts a year or so ago when I was shopping for my Monster
(BTV VT).
Nicely done and the black over red  695 is a sweet sweet look.

Good luck getting it sorted.

Coupla dings makes it a little easier to care for.
