Title: Making my Christmas list ....
Post by: eddyshore on November 20, 2009, 07:02:42 AM
One of the things I thought about asking for was a 14 tooth sprocket, Is it really worth it and what do you get out of dropping a tooth.  And any suggestions as to what might be the best to go with ? Thanks in Advance

James

totally worth it, especially considering it's about 25 bucks...
one of our sponsors, ca-cycleworks, has a good selection.

the AFAM's are nice... but the JT's work perfectly, it's what i have. and at half the price, and considering you can't see them under your sprocket cover... the cheaper the better IMO.

support our sponsors ;D

Mostly you get smoother takeoff from a standstill, with much less slipping of the clutch.  Definitely worth it if you ride around town a lot.  You also get higher RPM's for the same speed, which may not be a good thing if you do a lot of highway miles.

For me it was definitely worth it since I don't spend much time on the highway.

Dollar for dollar it's probably the best mod one can make, and also one of the easiest to do.

You loose some of the theoretical top end of each gear, but you gain a larger usable RPM range.  It makes the bottom end of the power band less likely to lug, and generally acceleration is a touch snappier.

I would suggest getting a case saver with it.

Not a bad suggestion. Case savers like $15. Hopefully you never need it - bit I've seen in person a Duc that was saved by one. It's cheap insurance.

Whats a case saver? (excuse the ignorance)

Edit: NVM i saw the pics, just the piece of metal above the sprocket...but how does it save the case? if the sprocket comes off?

no, if the chain ever brakes and lets go, it'll act like a whip, that case saver is to protect the case from getting ripped open by a heavy, fast moving chain fragment.
