Title: 45mm vs 50mm exhaust
Post by: ottoman on November 22, 2009, 08:29:38 AM
Hi guys

i've been piecing together an exhaust system for my 07 S4R-T

I already have the Cat eliminator pipes, and I'm looking at getting the termi slip ons.. (used) or other good brands such as Arrow,Zard, mivv, silmoto, roadsitalia etc etc

i'm wondering tho.. before shelling out for them..

how much diff flow and performance wise is there between the 45 and the 50mm race exhaust?

cuz i can get a 45mm full exhaust done for a whole lot cheaper than the the 50mm race kit..

DP ECU
QD cat elimator pipe
Termi slip ons
cut the stock airbox
BMC air filter

vs

50mm race kit for 3x the price..

how much diff are we talking about here? a little less torque and a little more top end?

I don't have numbers or FHE, but you'll probably never notice the difference between awesome and awesome. Aside from extremes, it's always going to be give-and-take with diameter and lengthâ€"though the difference may be negligible, one will be better where another isn't and vice versa. Get the 45mm and spend the extra cash on your next mod (there will be another...)

I was thinking the same thing..

the 50mm kit is decided for WOTing and top end at the track.. sacrificing backpressure and torque of the low to mid range

but seeing as how this is 80% a street bike.. I spend most of my time between 3-6k rpm..

I just wanted to hear some other opinions before I invested further..

Does anyone know if the DP ecu in the slip on kit, is any diff than the ECU in the 50mm race kit?

No direct experience, but from various dyno charts from various set-ups posted here and elsewhere over the past couple of years it appears the biggest chunk of performance gain from exhaust mods (on the Testa Monsters) comes from the ECU.

You might get some insight from this thread: http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=18082.msg323123#msg323123 (http://ducatimonsterforum.org/index.php?topic=18082.msg323123#msg323123)

Thread has chart from member Keld who fitted a Nemesis ECU to his 07 S4RT and added the DP airbox, but on the exhaust side had only the Termi shorty on the end of the stock system, including CAT. Dyno chart shows big gains (tho his chart for the 'stock' bike looks a little on the low side).

AFAIK, the Akrapovic full system uses the stock header size - in fact, I think for the rear cylinder it uses the stock header.

Also AFAIK, the half-kit ECU is the same as the full-kit version in so far as being fully open-loop (doesn't read the 02 sensor), but its map isn't as rich. Could be enriched with a Power Commander.

When I get around to doing my exhaust, it will be the ECU and tuning it that I am most concerned about on the performance side, with looks, weight and sound the key bits on the pipe side.
