Title: So what do you think?
Post by: MendoDave on November 24, 2009, 07:18:39 AM
Is it plate glass or bad 35 year old tempered glass?

BART POLICE PUT MANS HEAD THROUGH WINDOW (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBFjP-GV8BE#normal)

Plate glass.

Tempered glass fractures into thousands of tiny pieces.

Plate glass.

My tempered glass desk shattered this spring (as I nervously type this - and work daily - on the replacement glass).  Nothing like that window.

Tempered would not have busted from that hit at all. I help my folks do a bathroom reno. We took the tempered glass shower and big chunks of cultured marble from the 10' double sink counter to the dump. I dragged the doors out of the truck and dumped them on a small pile - then proceeded to bombard them with 5-20 pound rocks hurled, soccer throw-in style, from the back of the truck. They took a number of direct hits, perhaps a half dozen or more each, before shattering.

While some people are jumping up and down about excessive force on the part of BART Police. I don't see that going anywhere. What I do see is potential liability because of having plate glass in that pane when it's supposed to be tempered. I'm not sure what the standard was in 1972 but I suspect that tempered should have been used.

Does this reasoning follow the same line as "If you aren't doing anything wrong, you've got nothing to worry about" ? :P
