Title: A prank too far? I didn't think so!
Post by: vwboomer on November 27, 2009, 01:29:09 PM
So a guy that I've worked in the same department with for about 14 years was on vacation 2 days before the holiday this week. He enjoys putting used parts and whatnot in my toolbox for me to find, and sometimes I return the favor. Back in June we changed a pillow block bearing and I put it on a bench. Couple hours later it was in the bottom drawer of my tool box.

I didnt' say anything about it. About 3 weeks later he asked me if I found anything in my box. I said yep and that I was gonna tote it around until some day he was gonna get it back.

While he was on vacation this week I used some super high tensile strength rods to tack weld it on top of his tool box. 6 1" tacks around the bearing.....and inside each bolt hole  [evil]
I then piled empty boxes and caulk tubes on top and took a picture. In the midst of a few texts back and forth I sent the pic and never heard another word.
Did I mention the guy is kind of a neat freak and was pissed off one day when weld spatter got on a wrench? :)
I told him for months that ya mess with the bull ya get the horns  [thumbsup]

Monday I guess I'll find out how pissed off he is . Until then  [drink]

I look forward to your co-worker "turning up the heat" upon his return.  You'd be a good sport about it, right?

Next time crack open a drawer in the tool box, go get the powered grease gun, tape the handle WFO, and walk away  [laugh]

Greasing toolbox handles is ok, but I wouldn't load up someone's box. It's been done and creates a hell of a mess. I've always wanted to line someone's drawer with refractory though.

No pic of the bearing but it's under the box tower - hopefully he doesn't just punch the boxes off  :o

At one point I lashed his box to a steel beam with springs tied to the frame.
Good clean fun.
I didn't do it, but a long time back someone welded someone elses toolbox to an overhead beam. Then there's the always classic tip it upside down and shake it.
And the time a guy welded a bathroom stall door to another's box.
Or the fish skin in the helmet liner. Doe piss was big for awhile.
I dont' consider things like that good cuz i wouldn't want it done to me and wouldn't do it to someone else

It's all good fun untill someone loses an eye.....
then it's still good fun, only with diminished depth perception....

Here's some good clean fun that doesn't hurt a thing. Only works on part time 4X4's, best in the summer.
Get a couple of the really big wire-ties, loop around front drive shaft spaced about 45 * apart so that they will smack the oil pan. Avoid places with wiring looms and brake lines. Next time the victim locks in the front hubs, makes a wonderous noise. [evil]

Simple and repairable, but frustrating.  Just run a bead of epoxy across each of the wheels on his toolbox.   A small bead works just fine.  Box won't be going anywhere until they've been chipped off.  It is funny how a small bead of hardened epoxy will prevent a wheel from rolling.

So this guy put the bearing in your bottom drawer and in retaliation you welded it to his toolbox?

I'd be pretty make the beast with two backsing pissed if i had to grind through six welds to get the thing off the top of my box.

I like my shit neat, probably like this guy.  I use the top of my box as a work surface, having to grind down half a dozen welds to make it flat again would make me want to drag my balls across that other guys lunch, among other things.

Maybe things are different in your shop, but where I work, this wouldn't be cool

You call that a toolbox?  My roll cart is bigger. Seriously though the moment someone touches my toolbox the shit hits the fan.  You don't mess with my stuff.

6 1" "tacks"

1" long doesn't seem like a "tack"

it's works on anything with a drive shaft actually. i did it to my friend's SUV. he backed out of the space, pulled forward a bit, stopped, got out and looked around, got back in, pulled forward slowly, thought it was gone and took off again. he then stopped, got out, looked around, ect then realized it was something i had done then just floored it until the ties broke. lol.

the point is that what one person considers "too far" the next person may not.  for all you know the original prankster didn't stop doing the pranks and such so he was asking for it.

you can say "well he didn't go that far" but the question really is do a lot of smaller violations add up to one large one if the person keeps doing the smaller ones?

that is the big question.  you may say no, but someone else may say yes.

the only way to avoid this whole situation is for people to not do any of this, but that never happens.

I'm not too woried about it - it's not permanent. And in case he takes more offense than I think, there is a hunk of stainless laying around from another box we can shear to fit.

And never judge the size of a man's tool box :) If you can't do it with a hammer and torch it's electrical! Actually all larger tools are supplied so there's no need to lug around a ton of crap.

Should be a good day at work!

I should point out, if I didn't, that the tool boxes are company supplied, and there is a 1/8" steel plate sitting on top of it as a work surface. No tool boxes were harmed during this jackassery!

Company provided........that's a horse of a different color.

One machine shop I worked in provided toolboxes. Management decided we needed new toolboxes. DH happened to gone elk hunt for two weeks when, the decision was made, and when the new toolboxes arrived. Not being ones to waste a golden opportunity. We picked the lock on Denny's old box, transfered everything to the new toolbox, stashed the new toolbox in a janitors closest, put the old toolbox on the big bandsaw, sawed it in half, put both halves back in position, propped up with a cut to fit piece of 2x4, loaded with assorted old bearings and other junk, taped the sawcut with masking tape, and painted to match.

The look on Denny's face when he stuck his key in his box and it fell in half was priceless. When he finally cooled down, we got his new box out of the closet.

He could start a whole junk removal service. All he'd have to do is leave anything of his somewhere, and that stuff would get stolen/demolished.

well he didn't punch the boxes off so that's good! he actually thought it was a pretty good joke and inidcated he mighta had it coming. 10 minutes with the cutoff wheel with everyone watching and it was all good. Luckily/unluckily  the welds on the interior of the bolt holes didn't penetrate and he just knocked em off with a hammer.

ahhh good times.
