Title: Link to pictures of my trip to BigBend
Post by: John1454 on November 29, 2009, 06:28:53 PM
I figured I had better start my own thread because I have hijacked Venoms thread enough...  ;D

I had a great time, I wish it could have been longer. I posted my photos in the ride reports of Adventure Rider Motorcycle Forum.

Here is the link: http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529414 (http://www.advrider.com/forums/showthread.php?t=529414)

Awesome pix! I'm glad you had a great time and beat the weather! Congrats on your first long ride. Let me be the first to buy you a drink. [drink]

Excellent trip, I just had my wife look through the pics with me.  Glad you had good weather, when the "Texas Alps" get cold...it can get really cold.

This looks awesome. We've been meaning to get down to Big Bend and I think this is THE spring trip.

How was Marfa? I've heard its a cool town. worth exploring?

and ok, i know there is not any of it in the pretty pictures, but how would you rate the slab time factor for your itinerary? and how long did it take total?

I can answer that. Too make the beast with two backsing long. Not worth the tyres. We're trailering there babe ;)

Oh and, it looks like you had a blast. Congrats!

I can't say much about Marfa. I stopped there to get gas, but that was about it.

As far as slab factor: there was some flat straight parts on 90 on the way there, but the scenery was beautiful.

I-10 was boring but I only went that way on the way home to make good timing; as rain was coming from the west (and snow-- the snow we are getting right now, they got on Monday or Tuesday).

It is only 450 miles there... so even I-10 isn't that bad. The speed limit is 80... so I just kept it at 90 and watched the miles flick by.

If I had the option to trailer, I would still ride there... as it is worth it. Especially 16 and 337 between Kerville and Campwood.

I had a great time! 170 is a beautiful and fun road. I didn't do it, but you really need to ride it twice.... once to enjoy the scenery and then once to enjoy the road.

John. Been following your threads in Tech about your issues. Hope that we get a chance to meet soon (Wednesday Mings?) and that you get your chunk-o-metal issue sorted.

Thanks. I'm going to take the panel/cover off this afternoon. I will post up when I find what is broken.

Wednesdays are usually not good for me... but one day, I will just have to make it happen to get to Mings to meet everyone.

I was going to ride down tonight to the bike night thing in San Antonio... but I think everyone in the tech form is right... I can't just ignore the "chunk-o-metal". So unless I miraculously get the panel off and fix what is broken and get everything back together, I will not be riding down tonight. I'm not sure how long the gasket has to dry, but I bet it will require some drying time... so even if I got it off and fixed it and got it back on in a timely manner, I don't think my bike will be operational in time for tonight.

I do not know what the "chunk o metal" is... but whatever it is, I have a feeling it came off in Presidio (which is where I experienced the neutral issue I mentioned in the tech thread). I told my wife last night I really don't want to take the panel off... but I should be thankful that whatever half-way broke did not fully brake when I was in the middle of no where.... because it would be a whole different level of frustration if I was 500 miles from home  :o.
