Title: S4R(s) fuel range
Post by: Struba on November 29, 2009, 09:26:44 PM
I've heard many times that the fuel range on an S4R isn't that great. As an S4R(s) is on my list of potential next bikes how bad is it in terms of average km's on a tank? I wouldn't have thought it would be that different to ducati super bikes.

fuel range is not good, well on mine anyway.
i've ran out a few times, normaly around the 180km mark.
i carry a hose under my seat just in case.

Weekend ride saw three of us riding S4R.
My first fill I put 12 litres in and had done 165k's city riding.
next fill was 10 litres I think and had done 120k's reasonably hard riding with the folks in my backyard,
great squirt down Mt Keira and back up plus the RNP and a few other roads.

While on WSBK tour earlier in the year the same bike usually reached 170-180 before seeing the light,
meaning it would likely reach 200-ish before needing a full fill.
This was also some very sensible riding over 600-700 klm days.

Peak hour light comes on after 90kms. I'll get between 100-110km adding 10.5L to the tank.

Fun in the twisty's roughly 140km to bone dry.

Cruise on the open road up to 180km (but who rides like that!).

Overall quite shit.

Buy mine if you want  [moto]

I'm generally around 130km before the light comes on.  Full Termi system, open airbox, DP ECU.

On a related note - what's the most fuel you've ever put in?  I was crapping myself after the fuel light had been on for nearly 40kms, but I could still only squeeze a touch under 13 litres into the tank (with the bike on the stand).

I filled it to the absolutely full mark one day by sitting on the bike as I refueled.  The servo dude went off at me as though I was the biggest criminal in the world...  End result, it only leaked out through the overflow when put the bike on the sidestand I went in to pay for the fuel!

Never say never Serious Groper. What sort of S4R do you have, got any pics?

2008 S4R (bought it new in March this year) only mod has been the Termi's.

Aside from the initial stuff-up by Frasers Concord (they don't know how to put wheels on), it's been faultless for 11,500kms. I use it as a daily rider although i cycle to work more than ride now due to the good weather.

We are moving out whoop whoop next year and i can't have a bike with such a shitty small tank (it's worse than my old VTR1000). I'd be fueling twice a day. Besides, i bought the wife a CBR1000 on the weekend which looks brilliant and it's given me the itch to get a full fairing bike.

There you go Struba a bike ready to go for you, just get a mid pipe to eliminate the lovely utter
and hey presto wicked S4R for you.

Q777 that's pretty low, considering it's a 14 ltr tank with about a 2 ltr reserve and 2 ltrs or so taken up by the fuel pump.
I just went about 35k's over reserve light on the weekend.

Thanks Serious Groper looks very nice, I'll keep it in mind. (PM sent)

Matty does your S4RS run a different tune than standard (DP chip etc) with that Akrapovic exhaust?

Looks the bomb by the way. Does it sound much different to termis?

Title: Re: S4R(s) fuel range
Post by: mattyvas on November 30, 2009, 03:04:42 PM
Yeah it does.
Ducati Corse ECU
Open Air Box
Full Titanium very open exhaust
Yes it sounds very different, not so deep a sound like Termi's or Arrows but once it hits 6 thou.....
She sounds and then at 8 through well  [evil]

Cool, what's this open air box mod? I've seen it mentioned a few times

You can either cut the lid of the airbox to help it drag in more air.
You can also buy it in a kit with ECU and Exhaust.

ran out of fuel for the 1st time today...I knew what caused it too..

phark, she doesn't even cough...just deadly silence....should I have tried to shake her or start her up again after she died....I just locked her up and got walking.

remember back in the day when aussies were helpfull? now there a bunch of frickin crabby greedy brats, I had to beg a guy at pedders for his old empty oil container (I then returned it to him after filling up, he obviously cherishes his trash!) and the indian bloke at the seven eleven...he was shacking his head before I even got the sentence out, not a drop of empathy.

so keep your tanks full people because the public's hearts are dead empty.  :(

What did the speedo say when you went deadly silent.
That is how many k's.

180km total (city riding).....I had 10 litres at 150 and then figured (at 15km a litre) had 40-45 and then at 30km into the reserve she was gone.

ah well, had to do it once!

got it past 260km from Portland to.....colac....and then onto.....ah....yeah, there....

but I had here in 6th gear and was at 5000rpm so was therefore travelling at the posted speed limit of 110 all the way  ;)

Freaking S4R fuel range. Monday morning after the GP, 7km short of Grantville, sat beside the road for 1/2 hour with a dry tank  :'(

I know I've said this before, but, city commuting = 100km and light comes on.

Maybe I should visit bike boy.

So speaking of running out of fuel stories, I can't recall the kms, but on my first M800, I recall a similar train of thought and calculations.... And I too, was wrong..

Anyone who has run out on the FI bikes will know that they don't splutter and die - they just die! Ran out at in the RNP, just coming down to the Audley weir - lucky for me, I was at the top of the hill - rang the bronster who promptly came to the rescue on the vespa with a fuel can between the legs on the floorboards.... got a lot of shit for that one (and still do)

Much like my effort after WSBK trying to stretch the K's out of the 620.
A few hundred metres past a servo, one little hiccup and coast to the side of the road.
Call certain people down the road cause it was easier than doing the servo walk.  :-[

at least the Bronster didn't bring a camera (unlike me in your fuel adventure)!

I've had my S4RS for almost 12 months now and pushed it to the petrol station 4 times. Twice I've managed to start it again and cost in!

If your using it for commuting the milage varies greatly so moral of the story is when the orange light comes on I know I have to get to a fuel station in around 10Km.

On the open road it does a lot better but with the full termis, ECU and light flywheel she revs hard and sucks it dry........ Heaps of fun though and I wouldn't swap her for anything.......(much)

Its a bit of a hassel having to visit the petrol station every third day to refill. I was hoping that CA Cycleworks was going to get the new larger plastic tank up and running but they only have it for carb. monsters.

You think ???
She is from SBK stock.
I have the new AMCN which has a 9 bike test of the current crop of naked bikes.

Yeah I read that article too, I would have liked to have seen an M1100 in the mix especially considering the Monster is the originator of the naked category!

I'm a complete DUMB F>>CK!

I ran out of fuel AGAIN..................This time on Anzac bridge going up the hill on my way home. It was 12:30am and the servo on Abercrombie St was closed. I was hoping to get the BP on Victoria Rd but to no avail.

Fortunately, it was really late and I didn't get rear ended. Come to think of it if it wasn't so late I would have been able to fill up at the Shell on Abercrombie as I'd planned.

On a surprising side a friendly bloke stopped, helped me load the bike into the back of his ute and drove me to the servo.......I couldn't believe it. I was surprised how light the S4RS is!

I wonder if I can bolt on a superbike tank...... nar can't ruin her looks like that!

Mental note to self......
MUST STOP TO FILL UP ON ORANGE LIGHT BEFORE I DO 10KM ON THE RESERVE

Dan I am so amazed you run out that quickly and often.
Three times recently I have hit 30k's over reserve light.

Matty - How the hell do you manage those big kms? I get around 20kms max on the reserve light (i ran out at 16km last time!).

On the weekend 700km ride i was using around 1.5L more per 100km than the CBR1000. That was roughly 7.5L/100km on the open road in the stints where i was doing the 110 speed limit. My bike must be running hell rich although that was on 95 and not 98 (servo didn't have any) so perhaps that's why i got less distance  ???

Title: Re: S4R(s) fuel range
Post by: mattyvas on December 14, 2009, 06:49:19 PM
Open road I usually get around 180 sometimes more sometimes less depend on the twist of the wrist.
City I'll usually get 120-140.
Using mostly Caltex 95-98 but I also like to use BP where I can.

Maybe it's the good tune the bike had a longtime ago.
It's still open airbox and full system, so I can't really tell you the difference other than a tune by Dyno Dave.

I get 160k in city riding then 30k reserve....so 190 in my riding per 13 litre tank.....but nearly got the 280k on highway on the portland trip. (260 by the time I pulled in and still had 750ml - 1 litre left. and I've got a pc3 coming....

and I now understand why Dos doesn't use Shell.....my god the bike is running better!  [thumbsup]
