Title: More Streetfighters listed on Ebay than Monster 1100s!! What gives??
Post by: phatjoe on December 01, 2009, 05:28:01 PM
Hey,

I'm in the market for a Ducati.  I was looking to purchase a used 1100, BUT none are listed on Ebay and very few on Craigslist.  Interestingly enough, I did notice a few Streetfighters on ebay.  They are used and I've seen a couple starting at $11k.

For $11k would go Streetfighter or Monster 1100??  It's tempting, but I've read mixed reviews on the Streetfighter.  Anyway, my quest continues looking for a used 1100....

To me that says more people probably like their 1100 Monsters than those that bought the SF. Maybe the ugly factor kicked in. [laugh]

I see your a newer rider and i would not recommend the streetfighter as your next bike.  That is a whole lot of bike to be tossing around with only a few months in the saddle.  I suggest to keep looking for the 1100 used or check for leftovers at your local dealers.  Of course going to a streetfighter can be done but you are going to have to take it really easy and you might feel very intimidated by it.

I jumped from my monster 695 to a 1098 and it took me a while to get comfortable on the 1098.........o and it still can scare the hell out of me if i don't treat it with respect.  But i had been riding dirtbikes since i was 13 and streetbikes as soon as i turned 17, YMMV

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'd get the Streetfighter in a heartbeat.  It appeals to my not-so-hidden craving for <Clarkson> MOAR POWAH </Clarkson>.   And I don't fancy the looks of the 1100 enough to tip the scales away from the SF.   What mixed reviews are you talking about for the SF?  That bike is a f'n blast.

Edit:  new rider?  Neither.  Both are BAD first bikes .  The SF (aka Pasta Busa) in particular is just dumb, even if you've spent a month or two on a 250.  Might as well get a real 'busa and just ride into the side of a minivan.  I've been riding for a while now with a decent amount of tracktime under my belt.  The first time I rode a SF, I got a little sloppy and tired with the throttle and almost shot off the side of a mountain.

Below is a review which is mixed.  I guess everyone will have different opinion  :)

I would venture to say there are some SF up for sale because they scared the riders :o  They are beasts and they can lull you into a bit of complacency because you are sitting more upright than a SBK.  Most grab a handful of throttle and then end up grabbing a fistful of the best brakes out there and well you know the rest!!

the 1100 Monster is far more predictable power delivery..   as well as any of the 2 valve motors.  M1100 is no slouch by any means, if you are a new rider look for a 620/695/696, Hyper 796 or Monster 800, better choices IMO.

This is some very good advice in here.  PhatJoe you may want to take heed of this.  If your coming off of a 250 then a great step up for you would be a 696.  Much better brakes, suspension and motor.  The SF can wait.  One more thing to dissuade you from the SF, How much would the insurance cost you versus a 696?  It could be double.

I think there is a shortage of Ducati's in general. I cannot find anything in NC, SC, or VA that i am interested in.  DSS monster 800 cc and up.

The  street fighter is a dangerous bike even experienced riders have said that.. mainly due to its overly fearsome brakes ...several have been crashed for that reason and some riders find the bike intimidating and so sell it on quickly before they wreck it or themselves.
the 1100 is the sensible option and in the end more fun .I have ridden a 1098 and a streetfighter the 1098 was easy to ride the streetfighter was not.

I own and ride a  S4 ,M750,750ss  , and sometimes use a friends  999 trackbike .

but i think others nailed it the sf is a fast bike alsmost 50% more power than the 1100 so that is why people are getting rid of it.

personally i'm looking for a used 1100 and wouldn't really want to go for the sf bc of the power, even though the sf ergos fit me a little better because it is almost exactly like a brutale for me.

if you also notice you see more 1098 for sale easier than 848, i'm guessing for the same reason.. and why is it that there are a lot of d16 up for sale on ebay practically new and none of the 1098r up there? i would say this all with people getting the "most power" and then realizing while its "cool" to say you have the biggest and best toy, if you can't really use it the shine wears off after a while.

I think the SF is like the superbikes; MOST people will not be able to use anywhere near it's potential.  In fact, less bike will or would have been more fun to most people.  Buying the SF or a superbike is more for bragging rights than need in most cases.

Or because the 848 doesn't come with a dry clutch..........i would have bought an 848 but i wanted the RATTLE!!! Ok so i guess that is kind of bragging rights  [laugh]

And 2% interest was a nice deal sealer too  ;D

Personally I think that the 1100-1100s monsters are a much more sensible road bike than the streetfighter, blimey the throttle on the SF is like a trigger and the brakes are awesome those two items alone could get you in deep shit  [bang]

I have first hand experience, customer comes in and buy a SF1098s one week later comes back and says too much bike for him and not enough wind protection and trade down to a 1098s, a couple of weeks later comes back and trades the 1098s for an 1100s MTS, better fit for him and now he is the happiest man alive.

I have a Multi so I know that feeling.

FHE, you can direct your customer to the most sensible model choice for their needs as most credible sales people will do, but often consumers just want to purchase what they believe is the right choice at that moment. The heart often has more of an influence in a decision vs practicality.

To the OP, listen to the advice here. You really don't want to start out on a SF - it would just scare you silly or end up hurting you. If someone made me Lord High Poohbah of the DOT or something like that, I'd decree that all new riders would start out on a Ninja 250 for at least a year, preferably two.  You'd learn how to ride, how to get the most out of the bike, and probably most important, learn how to survive in traffic with a bike that is forgiving of mistakes.

All that said, for someone who's put in their time, the SF is surprisingly easy to manage if you just go easy on the gas and brakes until you get used to it. Oh, and be sure to set the traction control on max when your dumbass friend wants to ride it.  ;D

I *did* tell you.  Remember that stupid-ass grin on my face and that smell of excrement coming from my shorts?  You prolly didn't hear me b/c you were too concerned about whether you'd turned up the traction control enough to stop me from wheelie-ing the thing.   [evil]
