has anyone ever had to use crutches and figured out a way to strap them on the bike?
i'm looking for ideas other than strap them on my back.

Not really. Some zip ties should work, or some small bungee cords.

I use these a lot for light duty stuff. Wrap around the crutch and frame, put ball thru the loop. If that is not tight enough, run ball back under the running line that you put through the loop and pull. It will cinch down and hold it. You might be able to buy them at Home Despot as well.....
Which bike?

These also work very well for minor traffic discussions. If/when someone approaches your vehicle, hold the plastic ball in your right hand, the loop of the bungee in your left. Pull back to desired length and aim at the discussee's forehead, release ball. Be carefull not to run over the person after the light turns green and you proceed on you way.
Saw a guy once on a bike with crutches strapped to a Dakine Ski backpack. Had the crutches strapped to either side of the pack where it had straps to carry skis.

i want to be able to get them on and off quickly. zip ties dont' exactly fit that bill., though they are my backup plan.

Yeah, don't let them get away from you either while stretched. Those little balls leave welts......
