Title: anyone with F150 experience?
Post by: vwboomer on December 07, 2009, 08:16:02 AM
There was a rattle on the truck yesterday that showed up. Turns out there is a pipe clamp on the exhaust with about an 8" long 2" dia  pipe welded on it. Sealed both ends.
What's this for? Unless it acts as a vibration damper I see no purpose in getting a new clamp and welding it back together. I'll just cut it off.

Had the same thing happen to a 2003 F150 at work at 231k miles it developed an annoying rattle that ended up being the very same "clamp" I believe you speak of.

Our mechanics just welded everything back together.  30k miles later, still no rattle.

Rattle generator. Starts making noise years down the road so you get paranoid and buy a new truck.

Its a vibration dampner designed to prevent exhaust vibrations normally felt in gear at idle
