Title: Something to Ponder?? Post by: dragonworld. on December 14, 2009, 09:18:19 PM Sitting next to my steed in the garage having an ale (Or a dozen [thumbsup] [drink] )
As fellas are wont to do when given the flick from the living quarters (Or to get away from incessant nagging and female prattle that............. Ummmm, I digress before I get myself into a shitload of trouble [roll] ) I mean, why else does a fella have a garage or shed?? [thumbsup] Looking at said bike and noting that it needs a spot of cleaning and TLC, I noticed that beside the faded pinkish colour of my previously red anodised bits, the Oggy's are now a nice greyish colour!! ??? Ok, that is easily fixed with a bit of armourall etc, but after 2 years or so in the sun and weather,(Pretty well 7 days a week in all weather. [thumbsup] ) I wonder how much (If at all) the material has deteriorated? ??? And would it now crumble (like an Scotch Finger bikkie on contact with coffee,) on impact with terra firma if an oops occured?? :o Does this material have a shelf life?? And therefore should replacement occur after a period of time?? :-\ Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: ozducati on December 14, 2009, 09:34:53 PM seems a lot of anodized stuff out there fades badly .. i only mentioned to Dock the other day about the oil cap on my multi, 2 years old and is barely pinkish now..
Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: dragonworld. on December 14, 2009, 10:04:48 PM Heh, try 8-10 weeks and the colour has 75% gone is the worst I've had. [roll]
Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: mattyvas on December 14, 2009, 10:25:07 PM Would that have been cheap chinese stuff or from a reputable brand?
Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: dragonworld. on December 14, 2009, 10:35:59 PM Yeah possibly! I think the company is PartsRus (Australian)from memory.
Dunno where they source their stuff from, but the coating isnt up to much. Got some handlebar ends from Italy (Also Fleabay) and the coating is lasting very well. [thumbsup] Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: loony888 on December 14, 2009, 10:36:19 PM the problem is all the over the top occupational health and safety crap. now, don't get me wrong, i don't want to see anyone hurt or killed at work but the law is an ass. the chemicals and processes needed to turn out quality long lasting durable anodising, chrome, cadmium plating etc is extremely toxic, to us, animals and the environment. so restrictions have been made law and with less toxic chemicals and more "responsible" practices by business' has led to less durable and lower quality work. strangely, most were operating responsibly and safely previous to the oh&s crackdown by the government but in an effort to save us from ourselves they have legislated plenty of small businesses into the poor house.
want decent anodising and plating? get it from italy, they scoff at the oh&s restrictions placed on most western world countries and still do decent quality work, yes, it costs, but i'd rather buy a decent item once at a premium price than buy inferior stuff repeatedly. paul. I would have thought China would be in the same boat as Italy as far as their adherence to any OH&S laws and care for the environment and staff! [roll] Yet experience has shown that the Chinese, (Taiwanese??) stuff is of very Shite quality! [roll] Go Italian?? :-\ Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: ozducati on December 14, 2009, 10:57:01 PM i spoke to a company in Milan at EICMA that offer some beautifully made anodized bling, and a 2 year warranty on it.. they make the bar ends and oil caps for Ducati Performance, as well as lots of nice pretty shiny bits
these are some of their fuel caps (http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww206/Michael2511/fuelcaps2.jpg) (http://i720.photobucket.com/albums/ww206/Michael2511/fuelcaps1.jpg) Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Was it important??
Or can we get back to looking at the bike and thinking of what we can change/modify/lighten, and sinking a few more beers, hope you have your favourite tunes playing. What was we talking about?? Mmick Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: dragonworld. on December 14, 2009, 11:19:37 PM The original question was the deterioration of the Oggy knob material over time and exposure to the elements?? [beer]
And whether or not the esteemed loiterers and posters of knowledge and information on this forum have any opinions and or experience on the matter! [thumbsup] [drink] Title: Re: Something to Ponder?? Post by: loony888 on December 14, 2009, 11:39:25 PM oggy knobs tempt fate.
