So, my Monster was hit in the parking lot yesterday by someone backing out of their space. He cut the turn VERY early, hit my legally parked Monster so hard, he knocked it over away from the kickstand. Naturally, there's damage.

I'm really trying to strip the emotion from my post. Anyway, as I start the pain in the rear process of dealing with insurance and damage, I was hoping some of you might share your wisdom. I don't want to overlook anything and certainly don't want to get shafted.

Well if you really want to be sure of things, take it to a shop an have them do an itemized assessment of the damage. A good one will include replacements parts costs and the labor time. Between the two, it can add up fast. For instance, an OEM exhaust can (one!) on a DSS monster runs about $800... yeah 1 for $800, and yes, that is the stock heavy POS that we all ditch and can be found on ebay for $50 a pair.

But as you can see, a damaged exhaust, tweaked bar, lever(s) and assorted sundries could quickly clip up to $1000 or more to put back to new condition.

So, have it to a shop - let then go over it - there will be a charge for that. But be clear with them, that they are only looking it over.  Recently a friend had a low side, and the shop that looked it over managed to get a check issued with her and their name on it, just assuming they would be doing the work. They assumed incorrectly, so it made for an extra layer of hassle since she had to get a new check issued to her only, as it should have been.

I had the same thing happen to me a few years back with my first monster.  I had parked behind a truck that didn't check before he backed out.  Luckily the damage was only a dented tank which I had repaired for $100 and a cracked footboard that another DMF'er sent me his spare (Thanks Mother!).

Not much help here except for sympathy. I worry about that same thing happening to me. I try (when I can) to park in weird, yet protected spots where cars can't get to my bike. No illegal on the sidewalk stuff but places that put something between my bike and the stupid drivers like concrete barriers, etc. Again, sorry for the bump. Sounds like the driver stuck around... I hope. Good for them, that doesn't happen very often. Unfortunately. :P

The dude is lucky the regular 4 other bikes weren't in the space with me when it happened! Talk about a nightmare domino.

I'm taking it to the Ducati dealer later today. From the conversation I had with them over the phone, looks like they don't replace partial exhaust...this could get costly. At least he stayed...I hope he really accepts responsibility. I've had people "back out" of their responsibility after a fender bender with a car.

I didn't get a report. It was in a parking lot and they don't like to be bothered. Fortunately, our parking lot has video surveillance and I'm getting a copy of the incident. I'm planning for the worst and hoping for the best. I don't think the driver will try and get out of it, but you never know.

Maaaaaaaaaan, I'm so sorry to hear about that - that sucks! I can only imagine how I'd feel to see my beloved and coveted Monster flopped over like that because someone wasn't paying attention!!!

The good news is that it's winter and that means that with your insurance, it's the perfect time to mod.  [thumbsup]

I had this happen to my about a year ago. I was parallel parked and the guy next to me backed his trunk into my bike. It too went over the kick stand side. I was able to ride it home, although it was missing most of the clutch lever and the entire right side peg. The guys insurance gave me 5000 for it, I took the cash and bought a bunch of great aftermarket parts to jazz it up a bit. It can work out in your favor, especially if you are looking to upgrade some of the stock components. It is a pain having the bike laid up while the insurance works everything out though.

It was an absolutely terrible feeling when I walked outside and saw her on the ground.

Anyway, the first estimate is approximately $1600 but they forgot a few items and, when I rolled into my driveway after they looked at it, I heard a grinding sound coming from somewhere. [bang] [bang] [bang]

Oh, and I have yet to hear from the insurance company...

Here's what you do.

You get the duc dealer to write up an itemized quote to make the bike undamaged. You submit (or have them submit) to insurance.


Get your check for the value of the damage.

Pick and choose which things to replace with OEM and which things to buy aftermarket (like exhaust). You'll find you'll be able to upgrade some parts for cheaper than then OEM replacement, or you'll pocket some to buy yourself a dinner and get a used part off the classifieds or eBay.

The initial estimate is approximately $2400.00. But, I need to take it back for another look because of the grinding sound. I'm calling the insurance company (again) since they haven't called me back.

At this point, I'm still hoping for the best.

Well, the estimate was approved and so I'll be taking her in for repairs. It's going to be hard waiting...

opposite of this guys. lol the guy wont answer his insurances phone call. so that means i need to wait until after new years before the insurance ocmpnay will decide if htey are going to pay me or not. But as far as if they are, im not sure.

Geez...what is it with people? Sorry to hear it's going this way for you.

my input is to be ready to wait.  Seems like crash repairs take a while because the random things that get broken aren't in stock anywhere.

My repair took 8 weeks to get a kickstand.

i have jb weld. bike is already fixed and rideable.  :)
