Spectacular movie in every sense of the word. Double plus good.

re the story: I wouldnt say it was predictable, but rather archetypal.  Humans dig archetypes, because we like to be 'right' about things every once in a while.  ;D

Actress who plays the lead Navi - ...... Saldana? Superb acting all the way through. I'd be thinking Oscar nomination... were it not for the Academy having a problem with 'Animated' films. This movie is many things - animated is not one of them.

Oh, and just try and find the boundary between the real and the generated.... check out the skin, lips and eyes on closeups... awe inspiring stuff. Cameron has crossed the uncanny valley with ease...  [clap]

Yeah, I can't believe he had someone invent an entire language for the film and then called the key element in the story something so pathetically obvious.

And would it hurt Cameron to come out and say he got some of the visuals from looking at Roger Dean's album covers for Yes?

I have to assume it was a wink to the audience. They were just lampshading the fact that it really didn't matter at all what it was we were looking for on their planet, it was just the plot device to have us there.

Story = crap, everything else = AWESOME.  Best 3D movie I've seen from an image quality perspective. At first I was taking the 3D glasses off to see if really was projected in 3D or not. Most 3D movies I've seen just don't have the image quality of a standard film.

I went and saw it in 3D this week, Very Impressive! I thought the Story was a bit predictable, but I wonder if that was not a deliberate ploy?

With all the cutting edge Special effects and Visuals, maybe James Cameron figured to much of a deep and overly involved story might be to much for the average movie pundit to take in.

But I still found the movie entertaining.

Just got back from it.

I was able to look past the politics and really enjoy the movie.

As stated many times already, the plot was pretty predictable but it was still an enjoyable story.

All of the actors did fantastic jobs.

And the visual aspect of it is absolutely mind-blowing.

Why does there have to be politics in it. Most people that write, write about what they know. And these are all stories that we know. I think Camron was more focused on creating a new world than the story. This was about "film" not politics.

Actually he deliberately put the politics in. He's stated as much in interviews, so no it's not imagined or interpreted... it is there.

so you guys are agreeing with the reviews of the movie so far.

story is nothiing much.

but every review is basically saying that cameron was right when he was saying "this movie will change the way movies are made from now on" meaning he was hyping up the entire special effects/cgi/3d format that he was saying nohting was like it ever before.

some reviews have said that the movie brings back the "shock and awe" that the older movies from the 70s like starwars and such gave people the newness of what you saw was nothing like it before.  sounds lik you all agree as far as the whole 3d/movie experience  part of the movie goes, even if the story was sort of "ok at best".

From a cinematography standpoint, the movie was outstanding. Simply amazing in how the story was presented and the visuals were literally mind-blowing.
From a writing perspective, it could have been better but I honestly think that over-writing this film would have ruined it.

I love Zoe Saldana's character. It was a bit overplayed at some points but overall, she did a fabulous job.
Sam Worthington played his role as well as could be expected. Another instance of over-writing would have killed the part so the character almost had to be predictable.
I wish Sigourney Weaver's character would have been a bit more militant in her protection of the natives although, the whole "Where's my cigarette??!!" thing was pretty funny.

I think overall, the Critic's CHoice award nominations sum up exactly what this movie is and does. It pushes cinematography to a whole new level. But it doesn't stand out when it comes to writing or storyline and as such isn't nominated for awards such as Screenplay. The Best Picture nomination is kind of a wash for me. It lacks the storyline and writing to make it a "Best Picture" winner but the other side of the coin more than makes up for it's shortcomings for me.

In the end, I would definitely give it 2 thumbs up but only give it a 9/10 ranking on that scale.
Title: Re: Avatar
Post by: ZLTFUL on December 28, 2009, 07:38:49 AM
My comment was on how the role was WRITTEN and not on how it was PORTRAYED. Completely different aspects. The acting was great considering. The comment on Zoe being overplayed was more commentary on how it was written not how it was acted out.

The woman next to me had her face in her hands, was rubbing her eyes/head and had her head in between her legs the entire movie because the 3-D was bothering her.  Rather than get up and leave, she was doing that.  It was very distracting.  Prior to the movie, I heard her talking to her friend about how she got sick watching Blair Witch and Cloverdale.  WTF..why even go then?!  >:(

There's not really any comparing the shaky-cam Blair Witch and plain-awful-cam of Cloverfield with 3D effects.  They're simply not the same.  My experience suggests that anyone going to these modern 3D movies is not going to suffer any problems unless they want to.

Put another way, the fact that it was 3D has _nothing_ to do with her motion-sickness problems.  I didn't find the cinematography in Avatar to be particularly shaky, and I walked out of Cloverfield 'cause it was impossible to watch.  The 3D just isn't part of the equation.

Shaky or not..not being used to seeing things come at you in 3-D from a 60'x80' screen would cause problems for some people.  Hence, the reason we're on the subject.  I have to admit that it even took me a few minutes to adjust to the 3-D and I don't have motion sickness issues.  If I did though or if the problems I had persisted, I would've left.
Title: Re: Avatar
Post by: erkishhorde on January 18, 2010, 09:42:07 PM
The first time I watched it, it took me half the movie to get used to the 3D. I didn't get sick or headaches but I just saw doubles or halos around things that were 3D. That was in non-Imax 3D sitting in the middle but somewhat high up in the stands. The 2nd time on Imax 3D sitting in one of the front rows wasn't much better. Only took me a third of the movie to get used to it that time though. The modern polarization 3D is very angle sensitive.

BUll, the first 30 minuets or so my eyes were killing me and I was starting to get a hell of a headache. I was seeing a motion studer when things in 3d were moving quickly and I was trying to focus on them. Playing lots of video games makes me want to see everything quickly and in focus. FWIW, I got zero sickness during blare witch or clover field.

I let my eyes rest for a few minuets and pushed my self to NOT focus on the 3d stuff and blam headache went away and I was able to enjoy the rest of the movie.

It was pretty good.. the unobtanium thing KILLED me. you went and created this entire universe but couldn't think of something more creative then "unobtanium", might as well have been a mission for and "aluminum magnet"I guess it doesn't really matter to the story it was just kind of dumb. also I couldn't help but think "I've already seen "The Last Samurai" but still it was OK. no star wars or anything but pretty cool.

the effects were killer. the little jelly fish things were really cool. Segorni Weavers "avatar" was the only one with a huge rack. [evil] [laugh]

If only.  CES this year was stuffed with new 3D gizmos, and it's expected to be a fairly significant new market by the end of this year.  The theatres can't claim this exclusive for long.

I had no problem with the 3-d.  I found my glasses uncomfortable but not a big problem.  After a while I stopped noticing the 3-d and then I would force myself to pay attention to it.

I've heard that conservative reviewers saw the plot as anti-capitalist.  I didn't see it that way.  To me it was the story of the Native Americans retold and this time they got to win.  That's my own bias and it comes from spending the last 10 years working with Alaska Natives.  Still, it was a little hokey; but I had fun and I'm glad I went.

Too bad this didn't come out back in the 60s.  Half the crowd would be on acid, blowing their damn minds.

First 3D film I've seen, took me a half hour or so to get used to it.

Outstanding special effects.

Story was a bit predictable, but that's preferable to most of the movies I've seen lately where it seems like Cliffs Notes are mandatory.

Reminds me of Crazy Kurt here in San Luis Obispo except he lost both legs and still rides. I hear he finds his way to track too.

Oh, and to stay on topic,

Starcraft 2 (http://starcraft.incgamers.com/gallery/data/517/Banshee1.jpg)

the cockpit is just a copy from the standard AH-64 type helo for both, the starcraft has a rear rotor -- actually a VTDP (which is silly, two rotors which move as on the Avatar model can navigate the helo just fine).  armament is in different locations/designs.

they both share the similarity of looking like someone funked up a pretty standard tactical helo.

Funny how when you look beyond the surface you're losing it.   [cheeky]
